The best potential rule change I've seen floated is "no punting." Punting is boring. You have four downs to convert. If you fail, you turn the ball over. Simple.

Punt returns are awesome though. Kickoffs are what suck.

Don't understand McMahon's decision to exclude anyone with a criminal charge? I feel like he's really limiting the players he can choose from then, which also goes against the culture I'd expect he's going for?

Must be a liability thing?

Agreed. I think he’s trying ti appeal to fans weary of the spousal abuse, drugs, etc. But, to your point; why not let everyone back w/ a “one strike & you’re out” policy? Within reason of course, I wouldn’t want OJ to start rehabbing his knees.

My understanding is that they're dropping all of the "extreme" stuff. No more strippers and whatnot.

Say what u want about McMahon....dude knows how to market and appeal to the masses. He sees what is turning some of the public away while realizing most fans just want more football. He realizes concussions are a real concern vs the XFL days...& he doesn’t want a class action suit down the road.

If he can stick to his claim of zero politics & zero social debates, it could be a nice outlet for fans to enjoy football and get away from life for a few hours. I wish he would make ut a minor league system to attract the HS kids who have zero interest in college & want to get paid now. Would love to see their reaction when they’re not instant millionaires and not getting near the exposure of CFB.

Doesn't nearly every major sports league in the US have a red white and blue logo?

yeah but the original XFL logo was different, that's my point. This current incarnation sounds like very much like it's trying to fit in, not stand out.

no way....punt returns can be huuuge momentum changers...plus it factors into strategy w/ pinning them back, potential for a block punt or shank...

Punt returns are fun, not super dangerous, and, to me at least, are an integral part of the game that completely changes the strategy if you eliminate them. Kickoffs, on the other hand, are most often not fun, the single most dangerous play in the game, and can be replaced with other things and it wouldn't change super different.

This chart party video actually has some fun suggestions as replacements for kickoffs:

...kind of a perceived opening at the moment. If the league started tomorrow, it would be an attack point. I can't see the NFL letting that vulnerability hang out there for two tears.

We'll see if it is overplayed in 2020.

Anyway I think VM should focus less on being competition to the NFL, and more about an alternative to kids who don't want to go to college...paiRing them with veterans who are good stewards, examples. Then get quality coaches and make a couple success stories who make NFL rosters. At that point the NFL has to seriously consider buying him out.

Punts are only boring if you're an ND fan . . . fair catch . . . fair catch . . . fair catch . . .

ND commit, Luke Jones, plays at Pulaski Academy for a coach who rarely punts & almost always on-sides kick after a score. The coach’s name is Kevin Kelly. He gets a lot of eye rolls for his philosophy but a lot of college & pro coaches have reached out to discuss his reasonng on this...incl Belichick.

his reasoning for this is based on the fact that generally HS kickers and punters suck. it wouldn't apply really in the Pro's.

he did integrate a policy in his offense though that says any offensive player can lateral the ball at any time if they so wish which is kinda fun. there are videos on youtube.

Yeah, the punters and kickers are bad enough at the high school level that the field position doesn't change enough to justify NOT trying to go for it on fourth down. It's a big-time mathematical thing.

You can punt and try to flip the field position, but your opponent's scoring chances will never drop great enough to outwiegh the statistical advantage of going for it on fourth down, and trying to manufacture the yards on your own terms.

Yup. IIRC, Kelly is a math major and really dissected the statistical analysis of the different options.

He can try to go extreme, try to fit in or do something in the middle. Bottom line, it's not going to work.

1. All leagues have pretty much expanded to most major cities, so they are going to go head to head for customer loyalty, even if they don't play during the regular NFL season. Do I buy XFL or NFL season tickets?
2. Revenue from people in the stands probably won't be enough to keep it afloat. Can he land a large TV contract that will keep him going for 4-5 years to build a following?
3. Where will they play? People that pay to watch FB want a decent stadium with decent amenities.
4. Any idea why the NBA D league or minor league hockey aren't killing it? It's because the best talent isn't playing in those leagues.

If they take kids straight out of HS, this would probably impact a lot of the big time programs, including ND.

Lol no. This can only help ND. Notre Dame recruits kids that at least somewhat value an education. If XFL poaches high school kids, they're poaching the ones that have no interest in playing school, i.e. the ones going to football factories.

Anything that takes the semi pro player from the non college programs is a plus for real college life experience football programs like Notre dame etc-this is only good for real college football and I hope it becomes huge. It would make the Sabans of the world retire and give life to college football again. You could see a NCG with real college guys not minor league semi pros who are on campus living in their own little football world who don't know a thing about the pressures of college life. Would be interesting and real. Stanford vs Northwestern for all the marbles-wow.

Yeah, no kidding. The schools that care about winning will continue to win, because they care about winning. Bama and the like will still have the best coaches, favorable schedules, and will still attract the top talent. It's not liked it changed NCAA basketball when the top players went right to the league. Same blue bloods won the championship every year.

Don't kid yourself. It may not impact ND as much, but it will impact them. Not every kid that chooses ND is totally bought into the education aspect. Otherwise we wouldn't have kids transfer, get booted for any number of reasons, etc. Those are the ones who may opt to go play right away because they now have an option.

Oliver Luck to be commissioner and CEO of XFL

My conspiracy theory is that Luck, a brilliant man, realizes that the XFL is going to be the answer to bringing down the NCAA and their ridiculous amateurism issues. I think he wants to oversee the XFL's efforts at signing kids straight from high school.

I think they should have a 'supplemental' draft every year just for high school kids. Each XFL team takes a turn contacting one of the top high school players in the country. If there is reciprocated interest, that team officially has "dibs" on that player, and can enter negotiations. Give the kid a three year contract with an option for a fourth year, teach him the game and let him develop while making money and playing for your team.

After three or four years, he can enter the NFL draft or sign with an NFL team as a free agent if he still projects as an NFL guy. If not, he can extend his XFL contract or become a free agent in their league.

BOOM! Amateurism solved for the top 10-15 high school players in each class.

Or Bama could just join the XFL...

This is when ND will go on a streak of 8 NC's due to the 5-stars that would jump to not play school.
