Who Will Replace Hoke at Michigan

Of the lower level guys one name that was mentioned was Butch Jones. If they do get the AD from OU then I would venture to guess that Bob Stoops' name will be dragged about. They could also go after a pro coach.

I think a reasonable possibility is Castiglione going after Mark Stoops. Brother Bob has a better job already.

They may need to go after someone who has a proven track record at lower level schools. Someone who has built a couple of programs and has been able to maintain those programs. Hiring a big name guy isn't always the answer.

Maybe they sent some feelers out for M. Stoops but Kentucky just locked him up today with a huge extension.

They'll probably take Brady's best friend and neighbor, Barney Rubble.

ESPN is reporting $3M a year. I would think Michigan can beat that. Plus Kentucky isnt a great job... even Michigan is probably better than that.

Not sure about that. Would you want a job where the last two coaches were fired before being able to fulfill their contracts? Where every failure will be reason to heap on the "not a Michigan Man" pile? Where previous coaches are all up in your business? Where they expect consensus national championships despite not winning one in the modern era? Where you have to deal with Ohio State, MSU, and ND every year---and they get mad if you lose? Plus we all know Kentucky would finish first in any other conference anyway, and maybe win the NFC north, so it's not like they're bad really.

The compensation for his final season in the contract went from $2.65 million in 2018 to $4.25 million in 2019. The new guaranteed numbers look like this: $3.25 million, 2015; $3.5 million, 2016; $3.75 million, 2017; $4.0 million, 2018; $4.25 million, 2019.

That puts him around sixth in the SEC as far as salary. No buyout clause for him either so that may bring UM calling. He recruits well in the Midwest, especially Ohio where he has his roots. Just don't know if UM would take the chance on him as he only has a last year and this year as HC experience. They can easily match or beat the UK deal but I would think they look elsewhere first. That kind of money can get them a few more possible candidates who would maybe be interested. We will see. I like Stoops and what he has done but starting around $3.5 mil or so? I don't know.

Haha. I LOVE how UK and Arkansas get hyped up when SEC powers win against those teams.. ok, back to Michigan.

Local radio was saying that Harbaugh (Jim) is the one they should be all out after. Dropping a check on his door stop for the neighborhood of $7.5Mill.

Harbaugh is a pipe dream imo and frankly I don't know who wants to head to that mess. The only way I see Harbaugh doing this if he wants to hit college for 4 to 5 years to repair his image and then go back to the NFL. Frankly I think the Raiders will offer him the world after this season and Mrs. Harbaugh is reportedly very happy on the west coast.

For $7.5 mil Mrs. Harbaugh is just gonna have to get over it. Do you know how many pair of shoes that much money will buy?

Is Michigan really more of a mess than the Raiders? Does another million or two really make that big a difference to the NFL's Prince of Pleated Khakis? Reading between the lines, it seemed like his beef last time around was with Brandon. Now Brandon's gone. At this point Harbaugh might even be in position to call some shots on who they hire as AD. If he's really on the outs in San Fran, as reported, he could do a lot worse.

The stories that I have read since Hoke has been all but fired have suggested that John Harbaugh was more likely of the two to return to Michigan. I just don't see either one at this point honestly. It all really depends on the AD that is hired and then people can look for connections but before they go after the fiery Harbaugh, one would think they would go hard after Bob Stoops and dare I say it, Les Miles.

But the question is, does he want to go back to college? As an up and coming coach, he was trying to make a name for himself and did so at a big university. Now that he's established himself in the pro's, does he want to go back? I've always viewed him as an NFL type coach. Oakland and the Jets seem like the two most logical stand points at this time. Oakland offers the West Coast and a premier name. The Jets offer the spotlight of NY. I would think Atlanta would open up and would be a good destination as well.

This is all 100% guessing on my part.

I have heard that Harbaugh's wife loves the bay area and that is why they would consider Oakland. So a few extra million plus wife being happy equals win. I think it is unlikely that he goes to Michigan but not impossible.

The funny thing to me is that Harbaugh's style seems more suited to CFB, he seems to be intense and overbearing so it works with college kids b/c they only need to put up with him for 4 years or so. His act seems to wear thin in the NFL so I think Michigan would be a good fit for him. BUT does he really want to go back to kissing ass to 17 year old HS kids, I would think the NFL is more appealing at this point. just my .02

I'm guessing Mattison gets appointed as interim HC while the AD continues his search.

Best thing ever:

In a stunning coincidence, Hoke's ouster comes on the same day that it was announced that his predecessor in Ann Arbor, Rich Rodriguez, was announced as the Pac-12 coach of the year.

ESPN article.

My guess is he does go to the Raiders - appeasing his wife. Then the Raiders move back to LA and out of the Bay Area...

Lol, one of my buddies is a Nebraska fan and I asked him if he was worried about firing pelini with Michigan and Florida in the market for a new coach and he said there was no way Michigan was going to fire Hoke this year.

Nebraska's going to regret that move.

When people talk about Michigan pursuing a Harbaugh, I think we all need to keep in perspective what that really means. It would literally be unprecedented in the world of NFL football for a coach to walk away from the professional game in the midst of a successful run in the pros. In the world of football today, the "hot" college coaches get lured into the pros, not the other way around. Both of the Harbaughs are still in a position to write their own tickets in the professional ranks. For that reason alone, the likelihood of them leaving is extremely low.

Moreover, $7 million a year is a lot of money even for UM, which despite its smugness is still a public institution in a state whose economic woes reach back far further than the financial crisis of 2008-09. A lot of ink would be spilled talking about the use of state dollars at an institution paying that kind of cash to a non-academic administrator. Particularly when we already know that under Dave Brandon, administrative pay in the athletics department had already grown by 70% or so during his tenure. Combine that with a vocal faculty that is already complaining publicly about athletics budget bloat, and I just don't see UM setting the new bar for college football salaries.
