...which is why I think ND pretty much has to go undefeated. Assuming we'll not have a bunch of two loss conference champions, and ND is 11-1. Seems pretty hard to ignore a 1 loss conference champ, fresh off the conquest to put an idle ND team in. ND needs to play someone over that span to reinforce their standing...put BYU back on the schedule in that spot, and it may help.
We need a two loss "regular" conference champion and a one loss Big 12 champion. Not that crazy.

We had a last second loss to FSU last year, and with one loss, our ranking on the first polls was outside the top 8... I think 10-2 is impossible to get in, 11-1 is still a long shot.

But back to original question.. Yes u root for your comp to keep winning... You want your schedule to look as impressive as possible

Of course we have to see how the rest of the season plays out, but the statistics are unlikely to fall in NDs favor. OSU lost their first game and they dominated everyone the rest of the season... and they had a conference championship.... and they were ranked high at the end of the season. The majority of this discussion hinges on the committee's values for each team's records, and based on last year there is no indication it was consistent nor standard.

Plus I don't think people are considering what all will happen in CFB after ND's last game. They will be idle for 1 or 2 weeks (2 I think though not certain). There is a good chance that even if ND is ranked near or in the TOP 4, they could get passed by hot teams that played a conference championship game and won. I would not put it past the committee based on the explanations they used last year to justify their rankings.

This is false. tOSU had some really close games against PSU (won in OT) and against Minnesota. Minne-fuck!n-sota. MINSOTA!

They didn't smash every other opponent either. They kicked it into gear at the end.

Minnesota was frisky. The loss to Illinois is inexcusable but they were a lot better than Y'all seem to think.

I'm not saying that they WILL, I am merely saying that Herbstreit's contention that ND would have a strong case is not outlandish.

And my contention is that a 10-2 ND team will have a massive uphill battle getting into the playoff if recent BCS years and last year's playoff results are consistent. I am basically disagreeing with Herbie's assessment until the Committee shows me otherwise and with this premise, a 10-2 ND is not gonna get in (barring results that include multiple teams with 2 or more loses, which in the last 5-6 seasons, has not occurred). SO IMO, yes, barring these circumstances a 10-2 ND getting into a 4-team playoff is outlandish.

Sure, frisky in a Pittsburgh sort of way but they have no business beating quality, championship caliber teams. We always find ways to complain about ND not smashing lesser opponents but even the best from last year had moments where they stumbled but managed to pull it out.

No one will give ND respect for eeking out wins over subpar teams until we hoist the trophy. That's what it takes to shut everyone up. Even 2012 resulted in people saying we were severely overhyped, not a good team. You have to hoist that trophy and the haters will be seething in anger, silently. **sorry, that was an aside**

I'll root for our rivals that I respect, like Stanford, Purdue, Navy, and Michigan State to win every game that isn't against us.

But I'd love to see Michigan and USC go 0-12 every year. I'd be ok missing out on the playoffs every so often if it meant the Skunks and Condoms never won a game again. :D

I don't see how we get in at 10-2. But 11-1, with the 1 being a close loss to a good Clemson, USC or Ga. Tech, seems reasonable.
Odds are strong that at least one of the SEC/Pac-12/Big Ten champs has two losses. And our schedule will compare favorably with whoever emerges from the Big 12 or ACC, especially if the ACC champ is someone we beat. So unless you have multiple undefeateds, which rarely happens, we've got a solid shot at 11-1. It'll really depend on the breaks.
That said, it would certainly help us if Stanford has a good year. Need a big win late.

I had a FSU fan friend tonight tell me he thinks if we make it thru USC with only 1 loss, and win out, there's no way we're left out.

Figured it's another prospective from a different fan base.

The hoops team has never had much luck on the bubble. I worry that we would experience the same dynamic in football.

No way we get in a 4 team playoff with 2 losses. 1 loss is possible but definitely need help.

Here's who I'm particularly rooting for this week:

Texas @ TCU
West Virginia @ Oklahoma
Minnesota @ Northwestern
Alabama @ Georgia in a stinker
Ole Miss @ Florida in a stinker
Michigan @ Maryland
Miss St. @ Texas A&M
Arizona St. @ UCLA
Arizona @ Stanford

Most of those are obvious but I figured I'd put up a list of games we should keep an eye on. There are a few more but I can't see an upset in any of those.

IMO, never root for Stanford. Their record isn't going to make or break us, and they're arguably our biggest recruiting competition because we're going for the same players.

Their record isn't going to make or break us from a "total opponent's winning percentage" standpoint, but it could make a huge difference if Clemson and/or USC fall off over the course of the season. We'll probably need a "signature win" to get into the playoff at 11-1. Plus, we definitely want them to win when they play any undefeated or one-loss Pac-12 teams since another thing we need to get into the playoff at 11-1 is a two-loss conference champion.

Yeah I'm basically assuming we will have 1 loss going into the Stanford game so if they are a top 10 team at the time we play them that could be HUGE for our chances. I'm not worried about recruiting at this point.

yup they aren't respected nationally (even now) the same way USC or Clemson would be. I'd like to see them go back to being a doormat please and thank you
