*woosh* the question is whether he has to transfer down a level OR can play right away. NOT WHAT CLASS HE IS IN. Everyone is on the same page with him being in the class of 2008.
Do you have an answer to that?
I have no idea what year of school Butler's in academically, after he is in the Southern Cal football program. And as an athlete, by NCAA regs, he's completed 3 of his 4 years of eligibility with 1 year left on his 5 year clock.
'08 enrolled at USC but DNP (REDSHIRT) per USC Bio and NCAA stats.
'09 Overall in 2009 while appearing in all 13 games (he even started against Stanford), he had 20 receptions for 292 yards (14.6 avg.) with 2 TDs. He made the 2009 ESPN.com Pac-10 All-Freshman first team
'10 Overall in 2010 while appearing in 12 games (all but Notre Dame), he caught 9 passes for 112 yards (12.4 avg.) with 1 TD and also made a tackle.
'11 Played in 11 games caught 12 passes for 150 yds.
In his career Butler has played in 36 games with 31 receptions for 554 yds and 3 TDs.
By comparison (receiving stats only)
TJ Jones IN 2 YEARS played in 25 games has 61 receptions for 672 yds 6 TDs.
Riddick in 3 years played in 32 games 84 receptions for 893 yds 6 TDs.
Toma in 3 years played in 24 games with 36 receptions for 415 yds and 1 TD.
Goodman in 3 years played in 35 games with 28 receptions for 315 yds and 1 TD
Butler is tall at 6-4 but he doesn't bring more experience than the guys that are already here. Jones, Riddick, Toma, and Goodman don't have to sit out a year or learn the playbook. And they're already familiar with Rees, Hendrix, and Golson as those QBs are with them. They've all spent time in Kelly's system reading how to read defenses HIS way. Butler are any other transfer might be 20 year old but would have a steep learning curve here to be productive quickly.
Tell me there's a Golden Tate caliber player that wants to tranfer from Vandy, Northwestern, PSU, Stanford, or UVA and there's reason for excitement. Then there's even more than a scintilla probability of it happening.
