Butler would allow for the incoming freshmen to develop as well as learn the playbook more and not have "michael floyd" pressure on them.

And as far as I am concerned, usc is a little deeper in the WR dept than ND, so Butler not playing isnt such of a big deal compared to if he was coming from ucla.

Cuz hes done such a great job of keeping usc freshman off the field right?

It's not Butler if the Alford rumor is true. Coach Alford was hired at ND in January 2009; Butler was high school class of 2008.

Does Butler have his degree from U$C, thus giving him eligibility this year? Barr, if it were him, would need to sit out a year correct? And, I've seen Barr's recruit profile listed as Ath, what position did he play at UCLA?

Take two: USC’s Brice Butler ‘looking around’ at other schools

Just under a year after declaring that he would leave USC, before flipping back to staying with the Trojans months later, wide receiver Brice Butler decided he will, once and for all, leave for another school.

Lane Kiffin confirmed today that Butler, a redshirt junior, was “looking around” but no transfer destinations were mentioned. Barring a hardship waiver from the NCAA, Butler would have to transfer down a level — either Division 1-A or D-II — in order to play right away.

Butler had 12 receptions for 150 yards this season.

Looks like he would need a hardship waiver

I'm pretty sure Butler was class of 2008 meaning that he would have graduated... and even if he hasn't, he has the immediate transfer-and-play clause because of what class he was in at USC.

Or I'm completely wrong.... so confusing. I give up until something is made public.

Bulter was in class of 2008.

So I was right. That means he was eligible to transfer without sitting out when the sanctions came down... according to the post above, that doesn't appear to be true any longer. *shrug*

If Kelly gets another U$C Wr. transfer i'm going to start thinking he has a mole out there.

Amir would be a huge get and it would make sense why they wouldn't want to go through a prolonged pursuit of Neal if that's the case.

And it also sounded as if they put a lot of pressure on Westerkamp too on the in home visit.

*woosh* the question is whether he has to transfer down a level OR can play right away. NOT WHAT CLASS HE IS IN. Everyone is on the same page with him being in the class of 2008.

Do you have an answer to that?

I have no idea what year of school Butler's in academically, after he is in the Southern Cal football program. And as an athlete, by NCAA regs, he's completed 3 of his 4 years of eligibility with 1 year left on his 5 year clock.

'08 enrolled at USC but DNP (REDSHIRT) per USC Bio and NCAA stats.

'09 Overall in 2009 while appearing in all 13 games (he even started against Stanford), he had 20 receptions for 292 yards (14.6 avg.) with 2 TDs. He made the 2009 ESPN.com Pac-10 All-Freshman first team

'10 Overall in 2010 while appearing in 12 games (all but Notre Dame), he caught 9 passes for 112 yards (12.4 avg.) with 1 TD and also made a tackle.

'11 Played in 11 games caught 12 passes for 150 yds.

In his career Butler has played in 36 games with 31 receptions for 554 yds and 3 TDs.

By comparison (receiving stats only)
TJ Jones IN 2 YEARS played in 25 games has 61 receptions for 672 yds 6 TDs.

Riddick in 3 years played in 32 games 84 receptions for 893 yds 6 TDs.

Toma in 3 years played in 24 games with 36 receptions for 415 yds and 1 TD.

Goodman in 3 years played in 35 games with 28 receptions for 315 yds and 1 TD

Butler is tall at 6-4 but he doesn't bring more experience than the guys that are already here. Jones, Riddick, Toma, and Goodman don't have to sit out a year or learn the playbook. And they're already familiar with Rees, Hendrix, and Golson as those QBs are with them. They've all spent time in Kelly's system reading how to read defenses HIS way. Butler are any other transfer might be 20 year old but would have a steep learning curve here to be productive quickly.

Tell me there's a Golden Tate caliber player that wants to tranfer from Vandy, Northwestern, PSU, Stanford, or UVA and there's reason for excitement. Then there's even more than a scintilla probability of it happening.

Yes but that article is a year old. how does the transfer rules work now? BTW Why would we want someone who cant make the field at USC?

It wasn't an article. Its his IrishEnvy recruit profile which holds many of the answers people were seeking.

I don't see Butler as a significant improvement over our current WR corps. See my previous post.

Nor do I see him a likely viable academic transfer. I'm not aware of ND taking senior transfers.

Have seen some reports (Googling) that Carlisle is undergoing off season knee surgery. Not sure how serious, but wonder if this makes sitting out a year less unattractive to him.

I completely agree with everything you said and that's also why I don't think Butler is the guy. What I'm trying to figure out, and can't get a good read on, is that there seem to be conflicting reports out there about whether he would have to sit a year at a DI school.

Some places are saying he's eligible to transfer without sitting out a year because of USC sanctions.

Some places are saying IF he graduated he can use the graduate exception (but like you said no one knows whether he's graduated).

Some places are saying that he has to move down a level, which implies he hasn't graduated.

Definitely a wait and see type of situation.

A poster on UHND is confirming Amir Carlisle and his mother are on campus.

Did not expect this. Pleasant surprise if true. This time last year many of us thought he was coming to ND. He got some PT this year, so would his decision be football related? Or is SC's acting program not what he thought it would be? Or something else?

Irregardless, I liked the quicks I saw in him when he played this year. Real good fit, IMO.
