Look at the bright side, Elston didn't learn any bad habits at Grand Valley State. He didn't hook up with Kelly until CMU.

Kelly's coaching family is as inbred as those fellers who had relations with Ned Beatty in Deliverance.

If Kelly hires Elton then this team will be a joke again! they need a fresh guy with energy, not old news. I wanna see us get after the QB

I honestly could totally see this. Let's fire my good buddy only after being forced to do so then let a qualified DC head up the interim, and then hire my long time buddy who is LB coach, never been a DC and who is our top recruiting ace, so that with his new found DC duties can't spend time recruiting. Because ND DC's don't recruit under BK.

Or maybe ND would finally have a DC who understands importance of doing the recruiting leg work.

You can keep Elston on this staff and recruiting wouldn't change. You can bring in a good D coordinator from Wake or Washington State and improve this defense and guys who have proven to do great work with nothing really to work with

When asked about using his DC to recruit, BK said "I use my DC in recruiting like I use my my TE's".

That's not an actual quote.

-Doug Martin has Danny Glover's "I'm getting too old for this sh*t" on auto-repeat in his head

-Chad Morris still tends bar part time at the local country club so he can bang rich MILFs in tennis skirts while their husbands play 18 holes

This new staff projection is 100% unwanted, 100% expected, and the equivalent of some NFL team hiring Norv Turner as HC this off-season. Rinse.......repeat.

Omg you complete me. Lol. Every time I see Norv get a HC job you know you are getting a watereddown mediocre product whose ceiling is about .500.

If this shit plays out, I may skip 2017 and take up ham radio or something. Talk about wasting an entire season....

Not sure if these have been posted. 18 Stripes has been doing their own assessment of who should be the next head coach based on experience, winning, ceiling, realistic, fit and scheme. Pretty interesting if only as a thought exercise. At the bottom of the last article, Murtaugh gives his gun-to-head odds of who would be the next coach today if not BK.

If he does, that just goes to show how clueless and autopilot he is

IMO, once you've lost the fanbase at ND its over. The media loves to hate on ND because it sees it as self-righteous, so its essential to have a happy, loyal fanbase to balance out the noise and make the media look spiteful. Without that, the atmosphere becomes toxic.

It's literally like Swarbrick's giving Kelly a loyalty year. What does he think is going to happen in 2017? It's going to kill 2 years of recruiting and get us absolutely nothing in return except a re-building project in return. 4 years of mediocrity minimum.

Kelly has made over $30M dollars as he sniffed at other jobs. I like the guy, but no one owes him anything at all. Notihing. Zip. Zero. Zilch. He has not been here out of the love in his heart. He's been well paid

I will essentially sit out 2017 (i.e., lurk) if he stays on.

Driskell is hearing don't be surprised if Kelly hires Elston as his DC. Sorry if this has already been posted and no I'm not kidding

I don't even know what to fucking say. Shows you how much ND cares about winning again. I'm tired of this "hire my friends bullshit". If this is true I'm done man.

If this happens, it absolutely proves that he can't hire and/or work with anyone outside his tree. Absolutely pathetic. He's more dense than Weis.

I'm done for next year no matter what, I 'm done till Kelly is gone to be honest. This year was the first time I didn't watch the USC game. Heck I only watched the first 3 games from beginning to end. I have checked out and indifference has largely taken root.

But obviously I still care enough to post on a message board. 7 years..

Lou Somogyi always tells the story of Lou Holtz at the end of his tenure saying that the reason things started to go downhill was because he started coaching to "maintain" rather than to change things up and really try to win.

Hiring Elston as DC would be the textbook definition of trying to maintain.

BK has one opportunity to salvage any momentum going into the off season and that is by bringing in fresh blood at DC. If he screws this up, he is done.

Nice list but more than half can be ruled out just on current job status alone. While I definitely don't disagree with the conclusions, I feel like Fleck is "that" guy. I feel like one more year for Kelly won't make a difference, in fact will hurt the program since we'll be doing this next year again. As others have said they are not going to be tuning in next year if Kelly is the coach, welcome to the club. I was out after the Duke loss this year. 7 years and ND is 4-8.

But this is why we trust in Captain Jack. He has steered the ship thus far and most decisions have been pretty darn good. However I am now basing my opinion of him on how this coaching thing goes. Jack is suffering from apparently the same sickness as Kelly. Standbyyourmanitis.

To be fair to Jack, I don't think it's within his discretionary budget to make this decision.
