Wouldn't you guys rather have anyone else other than BK at this point? Who will be available next year that's any better than this year? Don't let BK destroy this program even more for the next guy.

Think of it like this: If BK were fired right now, where would he end up coaching? I'll give you a hint... It'd be no school near the caliber of ND. Yet people still want him around.

I don't think BK is destroying anything. I think the players need a little pride and to motivate themselves to be a little more physical. That's not to say BK doesn't have his faults, but who do you think ND would/could get THIS year if we were going to replace BK? Keep in mind that LSU and Texas are already looking for new head coaches and will likely have first pick. USC could be out there too. There may be other programs that are looking for coaches as well. So, take the top 3-5 best coaching candidates off the table, and the next best guy is who we might be able to get. Bottom line...probably not a great year to be looking for a new HC, especially since we just added a bunch of years to Kelly's contract.

The difference between Kelly and some of the upstarts we talk about is he won at places that were already solid. He took over for Dantonio at Cincy. He improved CMU but didn't do as well as Fleck at WMU with a better starting point (bad but not dead last). I'd like to see Fleck navigate the waters at a place like Purdue before the big time though.

I like McIntyre because he took a SJSU team on academic probation from 1 win to 10 wins in 3 seasons. He's taken a dead Colorado program to PAC contention. He has NFL and college experience at multiple stops in multiple leagues. He'd like the spirituality at ND. Plus looking at CU's recruiting their guys come from 4 states. Colorado, Texas, California, and Florida. He already recruits nationally. If not him then Whittingham. He wins big games and has done well at Utah with about 0 admin support (Like Brey here in bball).

I agree with MacEntyre but couldn't think of a reason he'd be attracted to ND. Curious why you stated he'd like the spirituality at ND? Does he speak openly about it or has he coache other religious institutions? Just curious.

Fleck would definitely be a gamble but if he went to Purdue and turned them around, I'm confident he'd get much better offers than ND. I think if ND waits in a guy like him, it'll be too late. But MacEntyre, Ruhle, Mullen & Whittingham seem like safe bets.

McIntyre leads a team bible study, when asked for his favorite band picked a Christian rock band, and openly talks about God getting him through his tough times at Colorado. He's evagelical though.

No way USC hires a new coach.

Kelly hasn't destroyed anything, but keeping a "dead man walking" coach is a surefire way to do that. Recruiting will stagnate even more if we keep him and we're sure to have several NSD defections if we hold course.

"Recruiting will stagnate EVEN MORE...." When did recruiting start to stagnate in the first place?

Kelly has put a damn good base in place. He aint destroying sh*t. The problem is that the on-field product doesnt represent the work he's done via recruiting and off the field for the program as a whole. But things are gonna be nice for the next guy.

You take the core of the current roster, and combine it with the first class or two from a new hire that gets that "recruiting bump," and you're competing for a playoff spot in year three (maybe sooner if the breaks go right?)

Of course, that's putting faith in the fact that the defense finds a couple of pass-rushers somewhere in the transition, but we'll worry about the details when we get there.

(Kelly's not getting canned this year unless USC wins by 50 and the team visibly quits on him. To his and the team's credit, they haven't packed it in at all like they seemed to do in '14.)

What does it tell you about the intelligence of the decision-makers at ND that whether or not BK gets fired depends upon whether or not we lose to USC by 20 instead of 50?

Recruiting Rankings by year (247 composite):

2005: 36 (Willingham Weis transition)
2006: 4
2007: 6
2008: 1
2009: 15
2010: 16 (BK Weis Transition)
2011: 9
2012: 18
2013: 5
2014: 11
2015: 13
2016: 15
2017: Currently 6.

We'd probably end low teens if we don't have defections and get who we should. If we lose a ton of guys we may be closer to the 20's. 4 classes less than top 10 in a row are what I call stagnation. We're about to lose our one elite class to graduation. The year you switch is usually a weakish class because coaches can't get relationships with recruits set in fast order. The next class is usually really good.

If we fire Weis one year earlier Kelly'd have way more talent to start with and I think by the time we got to 2012 we'd have way more talent. Waiting to fire Weis may have cost us a title shot. We had a weak class that Teo randomly joined to keep top 20 followed by the weak transition class. Similarly this class might suffer but we risk a weak one next year. Your downside to firing Kelly is if you believe he can turn it around and lose out on that, or if you think someone new is available next year. Otherwise you set the next coach back, because if Kelly has another weak year recruiting will really fall off next year.

Also this interestingly points out the weakness of Kelly. He's great at talent evaluation early and his classes generally overachieve, but worse than Weis at closing on the top guys on his board. Weis has shown that a really motivated guy could step our talent level up. To win a natty you have to have more talent than we do historically.

Sounds very much like the handoff from Weis to Kelly. Weis first two years he had veteran players thanks mostly to Bob Davie and partially to Willingham. But, then Weis had to rebuild the program from the bottom up thanks to Willingham and his golf game. One thing Weis did well was recruit and he recruited his butt off. This was a nice foundation Weis left Kelly. Just like Kelly will leave the new coach a nice foundation of players, plus field turf, a Jumbotron, etc.

What does it tell you about the intelligence of the decision-makers at ND that whether or not BK gets fired depends upon whether or not we lose to USC by 20 instead of 50?

Come on man that's just what Lion wrote. I don't think anyone in the administration thinks that way. I think it was decided after the Navy loss that Kelly would be let go. Same as Weis. After the home loss to Navy they had already made decision to terminate him. The Pitt, UCONN, Stanford, etc games had no impact on If Weis would return, the decision had been made weeks prior.

Wait, you honestly think that a decision has been made to fire Kelly already?

I don't know, pretty good chance though.

After ND lost to Navy no one knew the decision had been made to fire Weis till after the fact. As the loses kept on piling up it was clear Weis was going to let go. But I had no idea the decision had been made all the way back to the loss against Navy.

I feel like apples to oranges, though. Yes, multiple losses to Navy during respective tenures; however, this is BK's 1st truly bad season. Weis has three bad years in a row. I just don't see the school eating his contract (esp after doling out so much to CW recently) just yet. I think it was OBVIOUS CW couldn't take this program to the next level by the time he was let go. With BK, there is still a lot of uncertainty, so I just don't see the admin eating his contract until they have no other choice. Then factor in that there are no elite coaches knocking down the door and I think it makes the decision to keep BK even easier.

But what if it's Brian Kelly who decides to part ways? Make more money at LSU. Better weather. Get's to have guys like Aranda and Ed O on his staff. And of course the lure of the SEC and no academic regulations like at ND.

Well that's completely different lol ... we're talking about whether or not the decision to fire him has been made or not. I'm saying I doubt that it has. No idea if he's genuinely interested in LSU or not.

Kelly is hardly "destroying" the program. I think he should be replaced, but he sure as hell isn't destroying anything.

Agree BK hasn't destroyed anything, but the glazed look on his face a couple of times when the camera panned to him told me, he's not sure what to do or say at this point. Regardless of what JS said earlier this season, I think the time has come. If BK were to get the LSU job he would make this entire process a lot easier.

Here's my prediction... Jimbo to LSU, Petrino to FSU and BK to Louisville. If Jimbo passes up LSU, BK goes there.

Whats Louisville pay? Is it comparable to ND? I'm with you though. Best case scenario is BK decides to hit the streets. I think that is more likely than us telling him bye bye.

I'll believe BK to LSU when I see it. Find that very very hard to believe. From either perspective.

No doubt, that just seems like a weird combo to me. What about Tennesse? A business associate of mine is Alumni and season ticket holder. He claims Butch is on the burner.

Who the heck is saying LSU wants BK? Why would they let go of a NC coach for a limp noodle like BK?

It's all coming from his agent. Nothing to see here.

LSU desperately needs an offensive mind and already has a grade-A DC in place. Why not BK to LSU. Wouldn't be the worst coaching move made this off-season.
