FF VII and FFX are masterpieces and essential parts of gaming history. I've since lost interest in the later titles though i preferred the turn based battle system over the Bayonetta, Devil May Cry style of current games

I've been off here and don't have time to play until this winter but I'm shocked none of you are talking about Tears of the Kingdom. The whole family is looking forward to starting that one. Anyone played it yet?

Currently playing Diablo IV. Enjoying it a ton so far. Nothing really new, but just improvements over the previous games

Honesty Hour:

I’ve never played a single FF game. Missed out on FFVII during the PS1 days, never tried any of the others.

I played FFVII on the computer when it came out. I played it for a couple hours. My adhd brain quickly shut down when I had to click a button to attack but had to sit there and wait as my character was getting murdered. The game was quickly shelved.

FF fantasy are the Tim Burton films of gaming,… all visuals, little to no substance and broken mechanics everywhere. It cannot stress how much I loathe that franchise

FF VI is arguably on par or better than VII depending on who you ask. Visually it's not as advanced of course, but the story is fantastic as are the characters.

You're the key demographic that forced Square Enix to change Final Fantasy games from turn based to button mashers
Now we're enemies.

The SNES titles are all golden as is VII. IX and X are typically well thought of too. Admittedly the rest can be considered mediocre to garbage, especially some of the later titles.
Which titles did you actually play...or try to play anyway.

Honestly I couldn’t even tell you,… my buddies are all into them and I tried like 5 different times to get into whichever one was new with them and hated each one,… the one with the blonde dude and the gun sword was one I remember that much.

That was VIII. Straight garbage. It was plagued with a boring junction/draw combat mechanic, a stupid plot, and emo characters.

VI on SNES is a classic, often considered one of the best and on Top game lists along with Chrono Trigger. If you're looking to give the series an honest chance I would start with that one. I prefer the original SNES release, which you can get on an emulator obviously, but the Pixel Remaster is fine too if you want undated resolutions for newer TVs. Just stay away from that iOS version...the redone sprites were hideous and lacked the artistic look of the original sprites.

FFVI, FFVII, FFIX, and FFX I will go to bat for. The others, not so much.

I’m 9 hours in on FFXVI becuase I had heard this was the best since FFX… characters are cool but the game is probably like a 7 so far. The story is interesting, but the pacing of it is kinda odd… I do love how you can bring the lore up during cutscenes and see what they are talking about so you can track everything better. That should be a mainstay in any game.

Combat is fun for the first few minutes but then it turns into a snooze fest for anyone that has played Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Witcher 3 on a hard difficulty, etc. after that.

Idk, no party customization, no choices in dialogue or story, and few other things that would be able to make this classified as an “RPG.” And it looks like its a short game (30 hour main quest, 50 with everything). Final Fantasy just isnt the same.

Yeah, that's something they should have implemented in XIII. They kept adding these weird ass terms like Fal'Cie and L'cie, and various government groups...it was really a pain to keep up with some of the terminology. It was overly complex and convoluted when it didn't need to be. Really killed my interest.

Big ouch on that last part. Yeah, after XIII I've written off the series as far as new titles. That FF XIII "hallway simulator" was such a disappointment. I couldn't bring myself to finish that one. I didn't finish XII either quite frankly, and I didn't even bother with XV. The series has just been going downhill. The user reviews don't look good either. I heard Metacritic had XVI's score at a 6.2

You definitely played the bad ones. Give VI a try (Final Fantasy 3 on SNES. Like Dragon Quest, a number of titles got skipped in North America back in the day, so it was originally released as FF 3).

If the story fizzles out this is an easy 5 game imo.

If the story stays strong, the best I’ll give it is a 7. But most likely I would go 6 just because that’s where it’s trending overall. So right about the same as the average consumer I guess.

I will try to knock it out by the end of next week.

FFVIIR was a good game. Otherwise, I played snippets of 13 and 15 but was not a fan at all. Just not as much soul as previous games from Square.

FF VIIR may have been good on it's own, but as a Remake I can't...I still think Squeenix did what they did to squeeze the fans for 3-4 installments and make more money. Aside from that...the lack of a true turn based option was sad. I won't beat that dead horse anymore though.

They need a legit remake of Dragon Warrior 1,… no major changes just a full update of the same story

Didn't they rerelease it on the DS with updated graphics at least?
[EDIT] Guess it was Switch

Finished the Platinum on Jedi: Survivor.

Got three trophies all to pop at the same time at the very end, which was extremely satisfying lol.

Now the question… which game on my backlog should I tackle next?

- RDR2 (or even RDR?)
- Horizon: Forbidden West
- Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Shadow of Mordor

I’m thinking RDR2, but I know that’s a huge commitment. They all are, but I’m aware that RDR2 is on a different level.

If you are gonna do RDR2 as a casual gamer you probably need a good 2-3 months I think

RDR2 also gets my vote. If you're not planning on doing everything I don't think you'll need 2-3 months, but it just depends on how busy the wife and kids keep ya. You could skip a lot of camp upgrades and just knock out the missions in short order.
