Doing a Hibiki blind tasting, tonight:

Hibiki Harmony
Hibiki 21

I've had both, but not side by side. I want to see if I can tell the difference.

I read through some of this thread, last night. You drink some top-notch stuff, pkt. You and Whiskyjack.

This is a great beer. I tried it when I was in SB, earlier this Summer. I wish I could find it in my hometown.
Thank you.

You are drinking some mighty fine whisky yourself.

Today while watching football

Modern Times Critical Band IPA
Pizza Port Graveyard Pale Ale
A 32oz Crowler of Modern Times Perfect Talon IPA (A fantastic NE style IPA. If tasting blind you could almost fool me that this was a mixture of tropical and citrus juice, such as guava, mango, pineapple and tangerine).

Some SN Pale Ale at an Irish Pub earlier for the game. Then a super old Torpedo that I left at the Priest's rectory from January.

Lagavulin 8yo. Really green but some really nice wood smoke notes, smoked fish, lemon, vanilla and smoked ham/bacon meatiness.

Cascade's Sang Rouge. Good, but probably my least favorite of Cascade's sours.

Finished the evening with a St. Michael's Sword in honor of Michaelmas:

St. Michael’s Sword

According to an Irish legend, blackberries are bitter after Michaelmas (September 29) because it was on that day that Michael cast Lucifer out of Heaven, and that when he did, the Devil landed on a blackberry bush, spitting on it and cursing it. The St. Michael’s Sword is made from blackberry brandy and Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Bourbon. The “Angels’ share” is the portion of the whiskey that escapes into the air during distillation, but the “Devil’s cut” is the portion that seeps into the wood of the barrels. Jim Beam claims to have stolen this cut back from the Devil, and so we gratefully offer this portion to St. Michael for a job well done.

1½ oz. Jim Beam Devil’s Cut bourbon
¾ oz. blackberry brandy
2 dashes orange bitters
1 cherry for garnish

Pour all ingredients except cherry in a shaker with ice and shake forty times. Strain into a cocktail glass. Use a cocktail spear (St. Michael’s sword) to transfix the cherry (the Devil, red with shame and rage).

Not a huge brandy guy so I can't imagine buying a bottle of blueberry brandy. I would be interested to muddle blueberries in sweet vermouth and make a Manhattanish version of that though.

We had to modify the recipe somewhat given what we had on hand: Maker's Mark, bottom-shelf blackberry liqueur, and orange bitters. It was better than expected, but still too sweet for my taste. If you used a drier and spicier whiskey paired with genuine blackberry brandy, it could be very good.

Headed to Chicago next month, what beers do I need to try while I'm there?

I won't name any particular beers but Chicago has many great breweries. Half Acre is at the top of my list although I haven't been to even half of the cool craft beer destinations in that city. Also Chicago is a 3Floyds hotspot if you haven't had a lot of their stuff. You'll have a blast!

How much do you bros pay for beer where you live? I'm at my mother in-law's house for my daughter's birthday and Wegman's wanted $13.99 for a Roadsmary's Baby 6-pack. That's crazy beans.

For a 12 pack of domestic: $9-12
6 pack of high end craft or import: maybe $12 to $15 tops for the really good German ones.
Founders 4 pack usually around $8-10 maybe?
