How is the dogfish? Want to try it but I don't like a lot of spices

I have found the Dogfish Punkin to be my favorite pumpkin beer which isn't saying a lot as I generally dislike pumpkin beers as I find that too many of them taste like bud light with a little pumpkin and lots of spices mixed in. The Dogfish tastes more like a brown ale mixed with a little pumpkin and some spices. Not bad but not great.

Is this a limited/seasonal? I picked one up last week, and haven't popped it yet, but if it is seasonal maybe I should grab a couple?

It was originally a seasonal release (November to January) but they are attempting to make it year around but so far the availability has been sporadic. So I say pop it and if you like it go grab a few more. Hopefully soon they will get production up so it is always on the shelf (and it may have reached that point now as many states are getting it in stock but you never know for sure).

Dogfish in general to me is always overly spiced and or floral... just me?

I am not a huge fan of Dogfish but there are a few good ones such as India Brown Ale (exactly what it sounds like a brown ale hopped like an IPA), Burton Baton (part Old Ale, part Imperial IPA and aged for about a month in oak), and Miles Davis' Bitches Brew (mostly imperial stout mixed with a little honey beer). Overall I find most of their beers to be average and not worth buying.

Tried it last night and didn't care for it. It has a strange note that reminded me of mint Skoal (maybe comes from the gesho root?) Regardless, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone had poured some of his dip can into my glass... blech.

Over-priced and over-hyped. Keep waiting for people to get tired of their gimmicks.

That sucks. I do believe it is the gesho root that you are tasting.

Has anyone tried the Ommegang Game of Thrones Valar Morghulis? If so worth buying?

Ha! What are odds? Tried that last night for the first time as well.

It's good, but probably won't buy it again. Dubbel is one of my favorite styles, but the QPR on New Belgium's Abbey is so high that I have a very hard time justifying the price for anything "better" (and I wouldn't even put Valar Morghulis in that category). Abbey is always in my beer fridge.

Thank you. I will probably avoid it then. I also might need to buy some NB Abbey after your post as it has been a while since I have had it.

Thanks for all the cash pkt... does this mean I have to swing by Lagunitas tonight and pick you up a care package?

Nice thought but it was because you reminded me that I should buy some Hop Stoopid and since I started this thread I get money when people post in it so I like to give some of the money back to people who post in it.

Yeah I agree with pkt. I'm not a big pumpkin guy, but I'll usually try a couple different offerings every fall just to keep up with what different brewers are doing. I've found the dogfish to be among the better ones this fall. It seems a lot of brewers just dump some pumpkin spice into their regular beer so they can participate on the fun. I didn't try dogfish's last year, so if they improved it I wouldn't be able to say. In general, dogfish is a good brewer but they do a lot of forgettable stuff, too. I've always liked their 90 minute and brown ale, but not everything they do is great. I would say the Punkin is good as far as pumpkin beers go.

Funny, Bitches Brew is only Dogfish beer, besides Namaste, that I really enjoy. I associate the taste with porter. I'm not a Skoal chomper, so I can't speak to that flavor profile.

For those who enjoy Porters and Stouts, take my "review" with a large grain of salt. I tend not to care for most roasted malt beers; though I do enjoy some Milk and Coffee Stouts.

Victory Storm King Imperial Stout. Just not worth the price. Not bad but nothing special. A little too much over roasted coffee flavor. Making it a little too bitter.

Edit: Even worse, after a couple of sips it tastes ok on the front of the palate but by the time you swallow it tastes like super over roasted coffee and the lingering flavor is a horrible combo of over roasted coffee and stale cigarette. Nasty. I use to like this beer. Very disappointed.

Old standby tonight: Dogfish 90 minute. I'm in Connecticut on business, and the 9000 sq ft liquor store here that closed at 9PM had a sad selection of refrigerated beer.

:-/

Connecticut, why do you suck so bad?
