Ex Machina, The Matrix and Deadwood have spawned a child. I wonder if the Al Swearingen replica will curse as well as the original? Is that technologically possible?

Looks like another HBO hit.

Very intriguing. I love stuff like this that plays with the concepts of reality, dream, and consciousness.

Or......Westworld has been adapted into a series. It's dated nowadays, but the concept was mind blowing at the time and it's still a great movie. I get the comparisons though.

Loved the first episode. Lots of questions obviously but I didn't think it was overly confusing like some other shows in this genre.

Do you guys think the acting is purposely a bit cheesy when they are in Westworld? There were various moments when I thought I was watching a spoof of a Western but then I thought that was probably supposed to be on purpose.

My other question was how come Ed Harris' character is unable to be shot and other references are made to the guests being unable to be hurt but then they start actually worrying about hurting guests?

Just watched, and really liked it. The newcomers can't be hurt by the hosts in theory, but it is always a risk when the hosts start to break character, which is why the programmers are concerned after a rash of irrational behavior from them. IMO Ed Harris is behind it somehow. They mentioned a host rebellion 30 years ago IIRC.

Hmm, I thought Ed Harris was a human not a host.
That's why he was able to do whatever he wanted?
He mentioned paying to have his way with her.

Yup, EH is a human I thought too however both IMDB and Wiki refer to him as only the Gunslinger or Man in Black (not a host or newcomer like they refer to others). Could he be a rogue creation of Dr Ford? And what's the strange pattern he finds on the scalp?

I agree with you, but neither option explains why he can't be harmed by the bullets. The employees are concerned about the androids hurting a guest, so him simply being a human wouldn't make him immune to being shot. Also what was it about him that triggered James Marsden to actually shoot him if he wasn't an android?

If he was a human than wouldn't the people running the simulation know he's in there? They definitely would if he was one of their own. Maybe we will learn more about the process next week with the McPoyle being introduced.

Answering both with "I think," so TIFWIW:

To the first part: I think the guns aren't firing real bullets, and instead some signal/pulse that triggers a squib inside of the hosts. IIRC, the movie mentions something about this, and how the guests don't have to worry about accidental (or intentional) human vs human harm.

To the second part: I think Marsden shooting at EH is symbolic. It shows the hosts are developing strong emotions/attachments they weren't programmed to have, and are becoming sentient. Marsden reacted in a rage without following his protocol. His puzzled look after shooting was more "Oh my God I just shot at a human," instead of "why isn't this guy dropping?"

*I think EH is purposely wreaking havoc in WW to elicit these malfunctions. If he's working for a competitor or what I don't know, just a guess. EH wanting the code on the scalp made me think that.

I'd love to hear your theories.

Watched the first episode last night and was completely confused. I thought I had it figured out and then all of a sudden something would happen that would throw off my thought-process and theories.

Think I will have to watch it again tonight.

The music was also awesome, especially the Black Hole Sun and Paint it Black covers.

You know a show is good when you already have people writing articles about fan theories...

HBO has been killing it since about 1992 with The Larry Sanders Show and amped up like crazy since 1997 with Oz.

Ahhh, the show that gave us All State and Farmers Insurance Commercials.

We...are...mayhem, bum bum badum dum dum.

Agreed, I've already read 3 solid write-ups with fan theories. Some that I really like as well.

I'd say more like Nip/Tuck and Deadwood had a baby....

That was some weird shit. Watched it last night.

Does anyone have an article or 'go to' source for shows you just watched that need to explain to you what you just saw as if you were a 7 year old?

I have no idea what I just saw.
