This was Kelly's most painful lesson but it ultimately put us where we are. He finally gutted his staff and installed competent members across the board.

May BVG continue imparting his blessings on the rest of the CFB world.

He didn’t light the world on fire at Auburn either.

That would be the equivalent of me throwing a lit match at the surface of the sun. Auburn was the epitome of a dumpster fire before he even got there.

It's remarkable how much that program deteriorated after winning it all less than 2 years prior.

It's too bad he's going to get fired before we get a chance to light him up for 50+ next year.

I was looking at Auburn the other day. Their recruiting and results are very similar to ND's since Malzahn arrived. Actually think we've got identical records since 2013. Pretty inconsistent overall with both coaches having the knack of coming up with good wins and seasons just when they need it most.

Louisville has given up a school record 539 yards on 64 carries with over 6 minutes left in the game.

Vangorder’s breaking records everywhere he goes!

66 pts... LOL

I watched the beginning of that game last night. The ESPN play-by-play guys were cracking me up. They flashed a graphic up how VanGorder was "very good" against the Option in his time at ND, going 5-1. They mentioned how in his first game he commented that he had no idea what he was doing and let it get away from him early (Not something you want to hear from your DC). Of course, shortly after they were pumping up BVG we saw Louisville find themselves down 3+ scores.

Now, I will say that Louisville is a very young team and has that working against them, but VanGorder has never really been great against the Option. If ESPN would have actually watched any of those six games they would have seen that we had to basically outscore most of the teams that ran the Option, and for the teams that we DID play well against defensively it had a lot to do with Bob Elliot if I recall. Elliot spent the offseason one year completely focused on the Option and how to slow it down, that had nothing to do with BVG.

I’m surprised he even came back to coach college football, but I can’t hate on him for getting hired. It just doesn’t seem like a good fit. Wish him well though. It has to be difficult having been good at something to then really struggle. It’s a human experience.

I'm more surprised colleges keep hiring him.

It's funny going back over the first few pages on this thread. Lots of misplaced excitement. Of course nobody knew what a shitty DC and recruiter he was going to turn out to be.

That Michigan game though... almost makes it all worth it.

The Charlie W. effect?

Charlie has potential though

He should have just stepped back into the OC space and coasted.

Interested to see how his son's career pans out. Talented kid, but I'd hate for my kid to learn anything from Kiffin...

If he learns anything, it'll be how to pickup chicks with Joey Freshwater.

Louisville was #115 in scoring defense coming into the game. They should drop to about #125 out of 130 teams. I think it's safe to say that this is BVG's last division one coordinator job.

Better he learn it from him, than big CW....
Jr has that Opie look going for him. I bet he still gets plenty of tail since he lost the weight...

Louisville is now only behind Oregon State in most PPG given up in the country. At this point it’s just sad for a program who’s defense is being led by Brian Vangorder. He’s coaching 2005 defenses in 2018 and he’s a dinosaur. Time for the FBS to move on from him. Sorry.

He’s also just a huge douche. Largely disliked by a lot of people around him at various stops. Extremely arrogant about not much recently. I think ND would be viewed in an incredibly different light if it weren’t for that hire.

A little unnecessary to be honest if you’re talking Charlie Jr. here. I honestly know zero stats on him so far this season but hope the best for him.

How has he not been fired yet?
This was the fourth time this season Louisville has given up 50 or more points. Haven't beaten a P5 team and with three ranked teams left to go, they probably won't.

Any of us could do better just with D knowledge from Madden or NCAA (RIP).

I'm not a fan of VanGordor, but it's not entirely his fault. That defense is pretty young, they have 2 Seniors in the secondary and mostly Sophomores starting with one Frosh. There's not really much depth behind those guys either, more Sophomores and Freshmen with a few Seniors in the 2nd string. Very young on defense.

Ok, when was the last time he was a good DC, at any level.

Honestly, most around ND football believe he is what set us back. Yes, BK employed him, but nobody thought he was going to be such a huge piece of shit
