Been a fan since the 70's. The USC rivalry does very little for me. Used to be a much bigger deal for me, over the past 20 years, not so much.

I'd take a yearly game against Michigan or Ohio State over the USC game and wouldn't have a second thought.

The issue is, USCs side is correct that ND needs people to schedule post Week 5(ish) when conference play begins.

Week 0 - 5: should have no issue scheduling, like an A&M, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas that are set. But you likely want a bye in there if playing multiple marquee games.

Week 6 - 14: Navy + 5 ACC (+Clemson?). That’s only 6 or 7 games guaranteed for the last 8 weeks.


ND will have to front load the schedule with games and have multiple late season byes without someone willing to play in October/November.

Multiple set non ACC schools post October is kinda what makes independence still work. Stanford and USC are 2 of those 3, and now are both in question.

Not once during the Carroll/Palmer/Bush/Leinart ass whoopings did I ever think ‘gee I sure wish we didn’t play those guys’

We took our lumps which made this recent run of success in this series that much sweeter

The ACC wouldn’t want this, but an annual game versus Miami (counted towards the agreement) during Rivalry Week would feed families. I’m sure ND would sign up. The ACC, nor Miami would though.

FSU is playing UF that week so any game between Miami and them is never that weekend.

I wouldn't be so sure on Miami saying no to an annual game with the Irish. They're big ticket events, and I think there's a legitimate concern around Miami's campus that it might get left behind with the "have nots" of the ACC (with Clemson and FSU being the "haves.").

Out of those three teams, I think FSU would be far more likely to say "no thanks" to a yearly game with ND.

FSU at least will come up here. Miami appears to duck every game against us that they possibly can.

I get the importance of this rivalry to ND and USC fans, but the attention this is getting outside of ND & USC fans just goes to show the relevancy and draw of NDFB.

The last couple decades the rivalry certainly hasn’t been what it once was, almost totally bc both teams haven’t been able to be good simultaneously outside of a few years. If we were getting top 10 matchups here every year I really doubt we’d be on the brink of cancellation.

And it shows how slow the off season is news-wise. I love this rivalry but I’m tired of hearing about it.

It’s been pretty one-sided for each team going as far back as Ara & McKay. Back then both teams were always in the hunt for a natty but McKay tended to get the better of Ara more times than not. The only upside was when Ara did beat SC, ND won it all. Holtz dominated for a decade. Then Poodle. Then BK. Now it’s 2-1 in favor of ND w/ MF & LR. I hope the Irish play these last two games like they’ll never face each other again & go out with a statement.

It would be the biggest defunct rivalry in the sport, now that A&M and Texas play again. I think a lot of media has come around to admiring ND for a being a semblance of tradition in the sport. That same school potentially losing a rivalry would kind of turn another page for many on how much has been lost.

True, but change is inevitable now in CFB. Most fans & media believe it’s a matter of time before it evolves into one big super conference. I think the admiration for ND will be moreso that they will maintain the closest thing to a student-athlete in the world of NIL/free agency. This is the time for ND to flex that fact as their student-athletes typically wait until they earn a degree before transferring. That’s not nothing.

Honestly I don’t think a single person outside of ND cares at all about NDs approach to NIL or the portal or graduating players

Moving to the B1G to Superconferences are not mutually exclusive ND and USC playing.

In the new CFP format, which is what USC cites as a reason to hold off on a long term deal, USC will likely make the CFP with a Top 3 finish in the B1G. Meaning the ND game has 0.0% impact. If they do not fall in the Top 3, they will need a big non con win to somehow justify an at large in what was a multi loss conference slate. Beating ND would not only do that but negatively impact the most likely contender for the exact same spot.

It makes no sense for them to cite the CFP as a reason to end the rivalry.

Not talking about fans. Talking about ND program flexing that in recruits’ homes. They have one of the best sales pitches to student-athletes who are not of the Deuce Knight/Caleb Williams/Arch Manning persuasion. MF is great but he’s not the sole reason kids are sticking around to get a degree when they could easily transfer earlier for NIL & playing time.

ND is playing the players who deserve to play early, there isn't a player who transferred out that should have been starting for ND. It's pretty well documented that ND is paying up for players too.

I really think it's more about the travel (and Lincoln Riley generally being a pussy who can't beat teams that play real defense).
Because, you're right, if anything, playing us would help their odds as a bubble B1G team competing for a playoff spot. But I guess Riley's made the calculus that an extra trip to the Midwest every other year when they're already making three or four is more trouble than it is worth

Hope they figure it out and dial in a Sept home/away but if it goes away for now, they’ll revive it when the Premier League kicks off.
