Kelly will never get a big job again unless a team gets desperate and out of options. Everyone forgets that LSU wanted Riley and Fisher before Kelly. They settled on Kelly as their 3rd choice. Kelly showed his true colors as coach at LSU and it did not go well.

Fun Hypothetical:

If you had to take one of Lincoln Riley or Brian Kelly as your coach, who would you pick and why?

I think if you get a younger Kelly before he arrives at ND he was capable of making a team a winner. Lincoln Riley was handed the keys to the Porsche more than once and never got any further. Kelly got ND when they were looking like shit and made them relevant. I think he got burnt out like many ND coaches do after 5 seasons. He was a top flight QB away from having an elite team.

Wtf does that mean! He shouldn’t ask for what people would say to that. Lucky to beat a shitty Rutgers team.
It means his head is so spun that he actually thinks his team is good and no improvements are needed. He is admitting no flaws and opportunities for him and his team to improve on. This is a quote I would never want to hear from my favorite team's head coach. It is a literal defense for him as a coach and his mediocre team. He is defending him and his coaching with this quote which is not admirable.

BK. For one, I already know how that goes so the devil you know and all that. Secondly, BK actually allowed physical, defense first teams to be built and I would always take that over the soft, offense first type teams that LR, Kiffin, etc. build.

Both suck in big games. Riley recruits better. I'm going to play devil's advocate and say Riley despite the fact I know he can't get the job done. At least the cupboard won't be bare when he gets the boot. BK did some good stuff here to get the foundation, but I really wouldn't want him to come back. He's just so damn unlikable.

It's eerily similar to the Weis era both on the field and in xxxxl waist size.

The only difference is Elko has the portal and big bags (figurative&literal) to fill gaps in the roster.
Nah, with NIL Weis would still be employed and going 9-3.

Now today? They're both washed. So... neither? But there's a big difference: Kelly's 64. Riley's only 43. I'll be surprised if Riley's next two decades are as successful as BK's last two were.
BK sure wasn't perfect, but his teams were generally tough and played to the best of their abilities. Riley can design a nice passing game, but he just sucks as a leader. He should just go be an OC in the NFL, so he doesn't have to worry about things like defense and culture and character.

BK is a better head coach, but LR is a better OC.

The only thing that worries me about LR is his ability to get a quarterback. If he finds another superstar, they could get red hot in a game vs us and pull out a win.

Here's a question for you...with the assumption BK is a better coach than Riley, could BK's best teams have navigated the Big Ten schedules that Riley has to better?

Sadly, I'm not sure but wont concede it.

I think so. I don’t think BK would be winning the conference championship, but his overall record would be better.

We’d probably be stuck perpetually in that 2014-2019 Wisconsin mold with peak being occasional PSU 2024. Kelly was great at beating the teams he should. He’d still have more talent than all but OSU and Oregon and comparable with PSU, Michigan, USC etc

If you’re saying we’d basically be what Notre Dame was from 2017-2021, with perhaps a couple more regular season losses along the way bc we played tougher competition in the Big Ten, that’s still substantially better than what USC has been under Riley.

Riley as my OC, BK as my head coach. BK was a disaster fit in the SEC but I feel he could have success in many other areas. Riley is not a leader of men but can scheme an O

How would it be substantially better? Kinda sounds like they would be the same, no?

Brian Kelly and it's not close, IMO

Maybe a hot take, I think if Kelly stays he has a better record against LR than Freeman does. I think a boring Kelly team beats that USC team in 2022. Both Kelly and Freeman could dog walk Riley as a HC most years.

USC stole Danton Lynn after one year at UCLA...

I wonder if they would target Chesney?
