I imagine that the revenue stream is complex so what I say is speculation and supposition. I believe that any income earned by any given sport at ND is placed in a general fund. Whether there is a separate "pot" dedicated to athletic income and expense I don't know.

Regardless. The revenue positive sports not only support themselves but subsidize the revenue negative sports. I doubt that Rugby or Lacrosse (sorry LAX) are self-supporting. There are costs involved with facilities for both the teams and the entire student body.

The football proponents must justify their budget requests to a "higher power." The rowing, golf and tennis teams benefit from the success of the football and basketball teams. The students involved in "minor" sports benefit from their participation, as does the university.

I've heard this before too dshans. I'm pretty sure that's spot on.

why cant we have grass? Wouldnt that be a great thing for a home field advantage? Not only would teams dread coming to play at ND because its hard to win but they would have to deal with the grass and maybe the mud if it rains and what not. Jumbotron is cool in my book but I want to keep the grass.

The speed of the team would be better utilized via the turf. Brown, Neal et al would be so much more dangerous.

If you ask me the grass isn't a home field advantage. If you look at the WF game we slipped on the grass more than our opponents especially off of the line. It seems over the past few home games that we slip more often. The main reason I would like turf is for a better more even footing at the end of the year when our grass really takes a beating.

As for the Jumbotron see the previous thread about my views on that.

Ill probably catch a lot of flak for this, but id love to see more box seats in the stadium. I hate the idea of a fake field though, they look terrible on tv. Jumbo tron wouldnt be such a big deal as long as its not on the library side. I saw one picture of an idea someone had where the section in front of touch down jesus was cut out so you could see it on the field, that would be awesome. But then you would have to extend the stadium a bit.

Sorry to be way off topic, but we get no money whatsoever from the University. I might be a little bitter...

Sorry. I thought (erroneously) that Rugby went from being a club sport to a university supported sport a while back.

When I was there in the early '70's I had friends who were ruggers. Great people. Tough as nails. Accomplished drinkers. At some point ND offered to make it a sponsored program, but since it meant no more kegs on the sidelines they declined the offer ...

How in the Hell are they going to be able to afford 800 million?

I'm not saying it needs to look like this. I think the general idea is that if UNLV is willing to construct an insane looking stadium like this, we should be able to #RiseUp and make some modern changes, those that everyone has been discussing for the past few seasons.

Edit: And again, I think that we played significantly better on turf this past year.

Stadiums With Turf
Navy (Aviva Stadium): 50-10. Has turf.
Michigan State: 20-3. Decent offensive production but still early in year
Miami (at Soldier Field): 41-3. Showed GAIII's incredibly speed multiple times
Oklahoma: 31-13. This was grass, but some websites say it is prescription turf?
Boston College: 21-6. Has astro turf.
USC: 22-13. Has turf.

Then compare to our home game scores. Maybe not causation, but definitely correlation.

This website says the Coliseum has turf. USC Trojans:

Aviva is grass, you are right. But it is specially made for soccer pitches, which has a fibre elastic system - essentially short grass - with a more flexible feel and has elements of turf technology. See here: Aviva Stadium to reap benefits of turf technology

I though Soldier Field was real grass

USC is natural grass, just like the rose bowl, since its in cali it is so much nicer than up north here

The article says it was discussed, but I do not see where it was actually replaced....

"It's about what makes sense for the Bears in terms of the injuries that come about during the season and trying to maximize the longevity of these players," Serra told the Tribune recently. "There are a lot of reports out there that the NFL has done and that the Bears have done independently. And there are still kind of mixed reviews out there in terms of hybrid fields, synthetic fields and what you can do with that in terms of keeping the players healthy and maximizing their career length."

Let me check.

But I am wrong on the other ones. :(

Either way, I only said it was a correlation. Aviva is pretty much turf. It is short, made for soccer pitches.

I still want turf.

Saying you want turf is not the same as saying you want field turf or artificial turf. Turf = grass. I think that's where you are getting confused on which stadiums have grass or field turf.
