TSU Post Game Thoughts

We are going to need the def front 7 to step up if we are going to have the season we all want. More pressure from the edge, better tackling, more qb pressures.

If you grade positions through two weeks mine would be something like this:
QB: A+
WR: A-... frankly, they've done everything asked of them, but have yet to need to beat "good" coverage
RB: A... tons of depth and production
TE: B-... inconsistent blocking, not really showing up much in the passing game, unlikely to be a major factor this year
OL: B+... good not great. Still a lot of inconsistency and what appears -- to the untrained eye -- to be missed assignments

DL: B... not seeing elite play. Inconsistent pass rush and setting the edge. Not tackling particularly well either or getting off blocks as well as they should be.
LB: C+... the starters look slow and miss too many tackles. Get swallowed up too easily. It is visible how much more athletic Ausberry and Sneed are than our starters.
CB: A-... mostly covering well with few busts. Have not been challenged by talented passers or catchers yet.
S: B+... not having a huge impact but not screwing up either.

So what I see is one of the most complete and consistent offenses that ND has had in recent memory and one where if the OL improves as the year goes on then they could be really special.

On defense, I see a front seven that could get worked by a team with a good OL or Caleb Williams because frankly they are just not that athletic or disruptive.

If Bertrand out snaps Sneed during the USC game, we’re in trouble.

As the saying says, if you need your MLB to run 40 yards then you need a new MLB. So 40 times don’t matter.
Set the defense, call out formations, set gap assignments & do your job.

Sneed will have packages & that’s what he needs.
People wanted Prince Kollie over Bertrand last year too, & kid didn’t even start for Vandy.

Speaking of LBs, I was surprised Kiser didn’t play more yesterday. He and Sneed seemed to be the second unit.

Last point about the offense thus far. As guys have said, very vanilla game plans with no real need to put a lot on tape before the bigger upcoming games. And I’ve definitely noticed our WRs seem to be wide open in comparison to years past. I know it has to do with the level of competition but I like the scheme so far.

I get it, but feel like we said this year after year with BK offenses during the tune up phase, and then the exact same offense was shown under the lights.

Bertrand is A LOT better than the young linebackers right now. They might be better in the future, but right now he is better, & that’s all that matters right now.

2) After the Navy game I didn't expect to see much with this game, I am excited see our offensive playbook expand for next week
3) The targeting call was B.S. against Ford
4) I feel that ND is getting Jeremiyah Love ready as our #2 RB- kid has speed
5) Reps, reps, and more reps are important for Angeli this year. Yesterday was the perfect day for him to get those reps
6) Like Love on offense, Sneed can be a beast on defense for us
7) During the 4th quarter the video board showed Hartman playing fun with the crowd, he was playing hide n' seek behind a coach on the sideline. The crowd started changing "we love Hartman."

To be fair it’s really only Bertrand who isn’t particularly athletic, among the older LBs. Liufau seems to struggle with finishing but he’s fast enough. Kiser’s a very good athlete.

This year or next? Price is who I would tab as rb2 this year, #1 next.

Price is a baller. Kid is a explosive and twitchy even post injury. One under discussed element of the offense this year is the expanded role of our RBs in the passing game and they all catch the ball well including Estime.

I think my biggest disagreement is with the LB take. Marist has been great, Kiser has been very good. Bertrand has been shockingly bad but odds are that he gets back on track, given that he's been a very solid player for ND throughout his career.

I agree next year's duo is going to be fun to watch, they both have speed, and they are going to get better & better this year.

Two things that need improved fast.

Blake Fisher - He played good 90% of the time, it's the 10% that was really really really bad. You can't have that bad of reps even if it's just 3-5. They are drive killers vs a good team when our supposed stud RT gets absolutely whipped/pulled 1 on 1 and the Dline gets a clean run at hartman.

Kick off and Kick return - There is absolutely no effort from either unit. Truly appalling. If your starters aren't going to take it serious, find people that will. Even if we kick it through the end zone, our guys should be sprinting until they reach end zone. That's what great teams do and require. Our guys were jogging down there and stopping at the 20-30 yd line when we kicked it through the end zone, then we have a bad kick and they aren't ready and miss a ton of tackles. On kick return where Ford got crushed, no one, i mean no one put effort into blocking.

Thought I've heard a few times on the II pod where Kiser is the fastest lb and it's wasn't particularly close.
The other angle is what these guys are being asked to do when they're inserted.
Sneed clearly isn't being asked to do what Bertrand is.
Easier to look faster when you have 1 job.

Whatever betrand is being asked to do isn't working. Both liafau and Betrand are slow to get there or react wayyyy too much and not even in the play.
