Yeah, I think it should be troubling to everyone how he cozies up to Russia while intentional provoking China. One is a country we can grab by the balls, and the other is probably the single entity on the globe we really shouldn't fuck with. So his current play is ostensibly the opposite of what it should be.

My only hope is that this is all gamesmanship (doubtful) and by antagonizing China he puts a little scare into them before achieving an effective compromise... and by befriending Russian business interests, maybe he can paint an alternative relationship for the oligarchs that convinces them to install new leadership in place of Putin. I put those odds at 1%, it's more likely than not that Trump just has no clue what he is doing and is going to cause irreparable harm.

or like other things he does...despite him...things inexplicably fall in place

I seem to remember you calling me an optimist at one point...I'm returning the favor.

Depends on the day...but I'm guessing you are being a bit more kind.

One issue guy...still. Once the SCOTUS is resolved, I'm out.

Trump will continue to say whacky shit, and likely do few whacky things. Ride out the next 4-8 years, and hope everyone takes a deep breath, learns a lesson or two, and both sides at least nominate people we'd hire to cut the grass...aiming too high am I...ok nominate people I want to punch in the face a little less.

Is 27 old up there in North Dakota? When all of the old people do die off, Russia will be a shell of its 20th century self, as I pointed out in a recent post.

I don't "hate" the Russians, I do hate the idea of an American President not having the country's best interests in mind. Considering how oblivious Trump is on foreign policy, he may not even know what America's interests are; and considering how much of an egomaniac he is, he probably doesn't care to find out.

I share the opinion of guys like Michael Morell (I), ex-CIA Acting Director, who said "I have no doubt that Putin thinks that he's an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation."

There is no reason to align with Russia on any matter in Eastern Europe or Central Asia, and it's debatable in the Middle East. But here we are with an administration dripping with weird Russian friendships and friendly policy rhetoric.

There you go, someone ragging on Nobama once again! Relax, another 5 weeks and that azzwipe is gone! No more of his "I don't have clue" foreign politics!

This article smacks of elitism and is obviously intended to troll trump (and it worked) but gosh darn if it isn't a fun read.

Trump Grill Could Be the Worst Restaurant in America | Vanity Fair

[P]rior to his victory, it seemed as if the world of Fifth Avenue power brokers agreed: the lobby was perpetually empty, the Grill(e) mostly frequented with Trump Tower residents and locals looking for a convenient power lunch, if any of the bigger, better power-lunch spots nearby were full. But later, when I read previous reviews of the Trump Grill before he became a presidential front-runner, I was shocked to discover that the food back then was bland, mediocre, and as Eater’s Robert Sietsema once wrote, “for timid people with digestive problems.” In other words, it was a culinary marvel lightyears beyond the rich-man slop we ate at the Trump Grill weeks after the election. (And indeed, it was slop: as soon as I got home, I brushed my teeth twice and curled up in bed until the nausea passed.)

...this is the human being represents the attitudes that had the BLUE WALL folks nauseated.

I'd say with Trump about to turn off the spigot of illegals, and his courtship of the inner cities, that demographic advantage might start to look like Charlie's schematic advantage. The barrage of this kind of smugness is just more fuel to the demolition of the blue wall...Shrug.

Climate Change Discussion

Climate Change Discussion

Lest anyone think I am not educated on the subject, quite the contrary... I have read articles on both 'sides' of the argument, as well as ones down the middle. Here is a small collection of the hundreds I have read over the years.

Dr. Tim Ball: How the world was deceived about global warming and climate change
How the world was deceived about global warming and climate change - The Rebel

Nice video in the story that I pulled out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PWtaackIJU

The point of the article and video is not to dispute climate change, but that alarmist approach is hurting the actual effectiveness of policies/argumentation that environmentalists and climate change proponents are trying to use to address the problem. It also addresses the myth that the problem is getting worse over time, which is contrary to the data that shows it has gotten a bit better. While I still am not convinced about climate change is man-made, this is a sensible approach that I would be much more open to than the outright panicked, extremist approach many climate change proponents are resorting to.

Guest Post: The IPCC May Have Outlived its Usefulness - An Interview with Judith Curry | Zero Hedge

This article discusses how a supporter of the IPCC has broken from the ranks and is challenging the previous beliefs of the organization (but still argues for climate change, just that the beliefs need scientific challenge before blind acceptance, which is something I have said many times!)

Here is Curry again on the findings of the IPCC, which she criticizes (again as an advocate of climate change)
https://judithcurry.com/2013/09/28/ipcc-diagnosis-permanent-paradigm-paralysis/

A small quote from the article, emphasis mine:

Seven years later, with the release of the IPCC AR5, we find ourselves between the metaphorical rock and a hard place with regards to climate science and policy:

  • [*]as temperatures have declined and climate models have failed to predict this decline, the IPCC has gained confidence in catastrophic warming and dismisses the pause as unpredictable climate variability
  • substantial criticisms are already being made of the IPCC AR5 Reports as well as of the IPCC process itself; IPCC insiders are bemoaning their loss of their scientific and political influence; the mainstream media seems not to be paying much attention to the AR5 SPM; and even IPCC insiders are realizing the need for a radical change
  • global CO2 emissions continue to increase at higher than expected rates and a growing realization of the infeasibility of meeting emissions targets
  • failure of the UNFCCC Conference of Parties to accomplish much since 2009 beyond agreeing to establish future meetings
  • Growing realization that you can’t control climate by emissions reductions
  • European countries and Australia are backing away from their emission reductions policies as they realize their economic cost and political unpopularity
  • increasing levels of shrillness on both sides of the political debate, with the ‘warm side’ steeped in moral panic and hyperbole

And finally:

  • [*]after several decades and expenditures in the bazillions, the IPCC still has not provided a convincing argument for how much warming in the 20th century has been caused by humans.
[*]the politically charged rhetoric has contaminated academic climate research and the institutions that support climate research, so that individuals and institutions have become advocates; scientists with a perspective that is not consistent with the consensus are at best marginalized (difficult to obtain funding and get papers published by ‘gatekeeping’ journal editors) or at worst ostracized by labels of ‘denier’ or ‘heretic.’
  • decision makers needing regionally specific climate change information are being provided by the climate community with either nothing or potentially misleading predictions from climate models.

I Love CO2: Top 15 Climate Myths

In this article, the following data point:
FACT: Greenhouse gases form about 3% of the atmosphere by volume. They consist of varying amounts, about 96.5% is water vapour and clouds, with the remainder being trace gases like CO2, CH4, Ozone and N2O. CO2 constitutes about 0.037% of the atmosphere. And then the human portion of that 0.037% is incredibly small.

"Sir, we think the Russians did hack into the DNC and RNC. No word on if they hacked into the actual voting systems though."

"How likely is it though?"

"Hard. They are very secure, but some states, like Georgia, did refuse federal assistance in setting up systems."

"Well, give it a shot."

Seems like a more likely scenario than Clinton mumbojumbo. The DHS hack was 11 days after the election, what can you do there other than see how secure the system is?

I'd have to agree that someone was trying to hack something as a friendly, to verify security. However, once you've done that...why not call 'em up and say, hey, we verified your shit...here are the 3 things you need to do to tighten it up, but pretty good work?

What was the point if you do not pass on to Georgia what you learned...and failure to do so here is the instigation for all the questions...makes "friendly intent" at least questionable.

Go ahead and print all that out, laminate it, and preserve this opinion. Future generations will shake their heads at it.

If current trends continue, future generations will be too stupid to read anyway, so who cares?

We don't have to wait for future generations. Full blown stupid is already here :

“China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters – rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented [sic] act,”

To whom do we attribute this quote?

. . .
On Friday, President Obama cautioned Trump against allowing relations with China slip into “full conflict mode”.

In its editorial, the fervently nationalist Global Times, a state-run tabloid that sometimes reflects official thinking, indicated such a deterioration was certainly on the cards if Trump continued to act up.

People in China were unsure whether the billionaire’s attacks on Beijing were part of attempts to wage a psychological war or simply an example of his amateurishness.
“But if he treats China after assuming office in the same way as in his tweets, China will not exercise restraint,” the newspaper warned. “The Chinese government should be fully prepared for a hardline Trump.”

In an online video that has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, the newspaper’s controversial editor, Hu Xijin, said: “I don’t know if he is playing the psychological card with China or is in fact just unprofessional … China should teach him some lessons so he might learn to respect China after he is sworn in.”

A comment piece on the front page of the overseas edition of the Communist party’s official mouthpiece, the People’s Daily, also suggested Beijing would not be cowed by Trump’s provocations.

“It is difficult to understand his true psychology,” wrote Hua Yiwen, whom the paper described as an international affairs expert. “But China shouldn’t spend much effort trying to guess what he is thinking. We should simply stand firm, take control of the situation and handle it calmly.”

Bill Bishop, a Washington DC-based China expert, said he sensed “abject despair” in the US capital at how Trump was conducting US-China relations through misspelled tweets.

“This is unpresidented behaviour by a precedent-elect,” joked Bishop. “It would be funny if the stakes weren’t so high.”

“This is not a business deal. This is a political relationship between nuclear powers who are already on the path towards conflict in several dimensions,” added Bishop, who publishes the influential Sinocism newsletter.

“This kind of uncertainty, this kind of petulance, this kind of random tweeting … is not a grand strategy that is going to push the Chinese on to their heels so they are going to make concessions. This is juvenile, immature, inexperienced behaviour that has the potential to lead to many problems in the US-China relationship, some of which could have some pretty serious and damaging ramifications.”

Bishop questioned the Chinese media’s suggestion that Trump’s tweets were part of a wily psychological ploy to force trade concessions from Beijing. “I wouldn’t ascribe brilliant psychological warfare skills to Donald Trump,” he said.

Was it possible Trump’s tweets were part of an ingenious new master plan for Sino-US relations that would emerge after his inauguration on 20 January? Bishop was skeptical.

“I think that is about as likely as Xi Jinping waking up on 1 December, 2017 and declaring China a democracy.”

Sooner or later even stupid people are going to wake up.

Speaking of stupid, (The post, of course! I don't know the person.)

You read some articles? That makes you clearly more knowledgeable than scientists that have devoted a career to studying the complex issues that the media boiled down, partially misrepresented, and regurgitated in a major dumbed down way for people incapable of understanding what was (is) really happening.

And then of course add in politics, greed, avarice, etc.

Then you come along clearly cherry-picking items that may or may not be related to the issue.

I don't know as much about climate issues as I do about human nature, but any time I hear anyone quoting articles about 'global warming' or talking about global warming, I know I have the privilege of witnessing a real winner.

The things I know :
  • A room full of scientist is rarely in full agreement.
  • The issue isn't 'global warming', but global climate change.
  • Massive, catastrophic weather events are rising at an unprecedented* rate.
  • In spite of 'more ice forming' at the South Pole ocean levels are rising at the rate predicted by models developed by those warning us of the dangers of global climate change.

I notice you didn't quote the idiot that hypothesized that Mars was suffering a 'similar global warming, and that it was the sun's fault!'

Other than that, you have some good talking points from big oil's propaganda machine.

And please note, the use of words like 'deceived', is exactly the strategy that is turning everyday, middle America into a waste zone of idiots. Just work on a honest hard working man's feelings of paranoia, and anything is possible! Just look at Germany in the first half of the 20th century.

* Yes, for those less educated 'unprecedented' is a word. And potato doesn't end with an 'e.'

In the 49 states outside of California plus the District of Columbia Trump has a 1.7 million popular vote plurality over Clinton.

... Clinton’s 2.3-million-popular-vote plurality over Trump depends on the votes in a single state: California. Clinton has more than a 4-million-vote plurality over Trump there. In the other 49 states plus the District of Columbia, Trump actually has a 1.7-million-popular-vote plurality over Clinton. So California single-handedly turns a Trump plurality into a Clinton plurality.

‘It Was My Primal Scream’ - POLITICO Magazine

A longtime home health care aide, Cohen has many characteristics of a voter the Democratic Party typically relies on winning: African-American, environmentally conscious, pro-choice, pro-labor, pro-gun control. But this year she checked another box: pro-change. When it came down to it, she was angrier at her own party's leaders than she was appalled by a man who cozied up to white nationalist and anti-Semitic groups. She wanted to throw it back in the face of her party.

“It was my primal scream,” Cohen says. “I wasn’t gonna take it anymore.”

She honestly never imagined Trump would win. And even though she finds his choices for Cabinet and other top White House jobs “cringe-worthy,” Cohen doesn't regret her radical act of defiance. She feels that by helping take the Democrats to rock bottom, they’ve been “given a gift” to rebuild their party.

“I wanted it burned down ... so that we could build a new, hopefully more equitable one that meets the needs of all, not only the super-rich,” she said.
