I have had multiple experiences like this. After the BC game last year and my experiences, i swore that I wouldnt go back for awhile....yet i return this weekend. Anyone else have horror stories from the stadium?

It's ridiculous really. Like the article said, some people see the game as a social event. It's not a social event. It's a f*cking BCS level football game in the most historic stadium in the country with the most famous college football team in the world.

This is a becoming a common problem all over the place. I recently moved from Knoxville, and Neyland is a raucous place, but you have a ton of blue hairs that cause confrontations all the time.
What are some of you people expecting when you come to a football game?
This isn't a motherf*cking teaparty. If you don't like it, leave.
I dare any of you old geezers, if you even know how to use a computer, to try and defend your petiness.

Great article, glad to see this is a legit concern and seems it is being addressed. Hopefully we can get that stadium rockin' Saturday. I've never been to ND for a 'big game' So I'm excited to go this year for the scUM game. I'm really excited to see what they do, hopefully ND pulls out all the stops (noise, towels, etc...) we kinda need to win that game!!

I have an idea Jack. I mean you are the AD right? Call all the ushers into a meeting every Friday before a home game and say to them, "You will explain to fans who complain about other fans who are clearly standing and cheering for ND, without using obscenities or vulgarities, that such is normal at all college football game everywhere, ND is no exception. If the complaint takes issue with that response please ask them to contact the Athletic Department and ask for me."

I've never been told to sit down, but i've been given the evil eye more than enough times. I go to a ton of Iowa State games, and it's the complete opposite. At the ISU games they actually encourage the fans to get up and cheer for their team! I think Swarbrick is actually going to make this happen.

I look forward to the BYU game I'll be attending this year, and pray that I don't get arrested for "cheering" too loud.

I was told to sit down last year at the USC game. The old guys behind were being dicks so the ushers came to their rescue...usher asked "do you know the proper time to stand up?" I said "yes, when we are on defense, on big plays, and especially when the players give the 'stand up' motion to the crowd". Usher said "wrong. only when other people stand up". Hahahahaha I literally laughed in his face...how do you know when to stand up if you have to wait on everyone else?

So the cool people all around me said "eff it, we're all going to stand the entire rest of the game to shut up these old bastards behind us" it worked out, but was a huge halftime argument that led to a few people escorted out...absolutely ridiculous.

There should be some kind of section rule where fans will be notified that there will be standing. non-standing sections will be relegated to the upper levels.

This just makes me sad... wtf is the point of going to a game if you expect no one to stand up and cheer at any given moment.... that's half the expereince to me.

I like the idea where the sitters switch seats with the standing fans, but then again I haven't had any real problems in Notre Dame stadium with this, and I'm 6'2". I try to be courteous, but you better believe I'm going to be on my feet when the defense is on the field, and occasionally the offense if it isn't going to disrupt them. I greatly dislike when the stadium has been hushed when they should playing the 12th man. Aside from maybe a game or two, '05 USC was the last time that stadium was really loud.

I don't have any problems with the ushers usually, most do a fine job. The usher in the boxed seats with us in section 10 has been there at least 8-10 years I would guess, always the same place, and he's awesome. I have had issues where fans that couldn't hold their liquor weren't removed. Most recently, the Utah game, there was some girl that was passed out 3/4 of the game, and she only woke up to vommit. She really needed to be escorted out, and people pointed out she was causing...hygienic issues...but nothing happened. This isn't always the case though, as I took an Army buddy to the Air Force game last year, he was sober and had a bad reaction to some food from earlier, and he was ejected for the game. I also received a nice letter from the University afterwards since I picked up his ticket. I had to laugh.

The atmosphere at the USC game last year was really good until the actual game started. I remember looking at the recruits section a lot during the game with my binoculars and thinking "Greenberry doesn't look like he's having fun" or something along those lines. Theus was talking Marshall a lot (suprise, suprise). Tee was up standing most of the game with most if not all of the ND commits. Zach Banner looked like a Monster. The west coast uncommitted guys kinda stayed in there own little group a row or 2 up from the field (Shaq Thompson, Armstead, Treggs, Payton, Ishmael Adams etc...) Brian Poole seemed really into the game. I hadn't been on my phone all day so I thought maybe he flipped. We know how that turned out.

If you don't want to stand or see people standing at a football game, there are plenty of bars to go to or just turn on NBC. I got biitched at when I went to a UW/ND game at UW for standing. They asked if I was going to stand the whole game to which I replied YES. Didn't go over so well. Their fans didn't stand at all. I guess cuz they got their *** kicked.

Agreed-if they are "just" cheering and being loud-no problem. Swearing is inappropriate.

I've been to numerous games over the years and never had a problem-except once, an A&M fan was using obsenities and decided it would be best to deescalate the situation with him-I did and no problem.

Man, getting older, I just don't have the energy any longer to stand cheering loudly the entire game-I need to pick and choose my spots. Maybe I'm the old geezer.?.

At this point the only thing that can fix the noise level in the stadium is for ND to become a consistent BCS contender

I almost disagree with the notion that if the team is winning, the crowd will respond. To some extent winning will help, but not as much as you would think. There have been some big games where we've made a little noise, but nothing compared to what other stadiums accomplish...and thats comparing stadiums with less people to boot. Theres just too many people that would rather golf clap and sit the entire game. I'm calling it like I see it, like it or not.

Compare Notre Dame Stadium to a location with 15,000 less people, Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium. It was once ranked #2 in scariest places to play within the last 5 years, and in my opinion we barely crack half their noise during some of our rival games. Thats unacceptable. The crowd needs to be loud, unless you're up by 4 scores, you should be making it difficult for the opposing offense. Saw it in '05 against USC, Leinart had a pretty tough time communicating audibles at the line, and there were false starts as a result of the crowd noise.

This is one of the main reasons I don't like to go to games anymore. It needs to change. It's very aggravating to go to a FOOTBALL GAME and be told to be quiet and sit down. It's not the opera!

Why not institute a number of non-student "student" sections where push-ups and only sitting at half time are expected? How many fans would check a box to get those seats? Start with them on the goal lines and work out from there. Have another box for the old codgers to check if they want donut cushions and tea service and put them on the first rows of the upper deck where there is enough separation the standing below won't obstruct their view.
