Reported in at 5'11" 177. Got to say that is a lot smaller on paper than I was hoping for. Is he more of a corner than safety?

At 177 I'd say so. Not to mention, your prototypical safety is 6' to 6'2", although his height is not that much of a detriment. I imagine he needs to add some bulk to compete for a safety spot in the future. He is only up 7 pounds since HS so I dunno if bulking up for safety is in the coaching staff's plans. With his speed, I say corner is where he should be.

Yeah he came in a little lighter than expected, but not sure how accurate the weights were, guys are different than what was reported in the media guide. He will be fine...this year he shouldnt see anything more than SpTeams or possibly the occasional mop up time when we are up 30. Heck, it wouldnt be bad either to shelf him, but I dont see that unless Collinsworth is a lot better than expected. Just not a lot of depth back at safety. :(

Do you think there's any chance he gets snaps in practice as a KR/PR for the future as well as what he was recruited for (defense)?

I wouldnt be surprised. He doesnt have Darby speed but he is more than capable of handling returns.

I agree, but I don't think it was just hope: he was listed at 6'0", 180 lbs! I wonder if he switches out with Brown, who comes in bigger than projected, at CB.

Yeah seriously... or Danny McCarthy gets healthy for the first time ever.

I doubt he switches to CB unless its like a Slaughter type role from a few years ago. I can def see him getting on the field in a nickel situation. Jalen isnt going to safety in "my opinion" (lol) just bc he is a natural at cb. Eilar is a natural at safety and will cover more ground compared to Jalen.

I think Jalen will def shock a lot of people with his play over the next few years. Great size.

He is a safety and a good one and he probably could grow and become bigger and he is fast which is what we want

I watched his highlights and he may even have a chance to play some RB this season given our lack of depth. He looked good at RB in his high school highlights. Good shiftiness and speed!!

Now that he's on campus and will be in Longo's full time regiment of diet and work outs I think we'll see him put on some size. Some guys are just hard gainers and it takes alot to put on correct weight and keep it on.

Supposedly tore LCL and will miss season. Unconfirmed, but that's what I just read. Huge bummer.

Ugh. Injury in the secondary hurts. Not the worst possible injury, but Hardy is going to be needed in a major way next year. So much for the experience he was going to gain this season.

I feel for Eilar, and this is obviously a blow to an already-thin secondary, but at the end of the day - stuff happens. There will be injuries this year, like there are every year. Some of Eilar's classmates will have to step up and be ready to contribute in some capacity this season. This isn't ideal, but no injury is. The train will keep on rolling.

I hope Eilar's rehab goes well, and in the meantime he makes the most of a disappointing situation and prepares himself mentally to step in as soon as he is physically able.

A ND blogger (oaknd1) recently tweeted:

Wisdom of Mike Frank: If there aren't a few injuries in fall camp, they aren't hitting hard enough and team will be soft in the season.

Terrible news...an injury he could rehab from and come back in a month or so depending on the severity, but I think it's the right move to shut him down and let his body heel...idk how much more our secondary can take hopefully this is its last bit of bad news health wise.

Since McCarthy and Collingsworth are apparently doing so well thus solidifying safety to the max, maybe this points to Jalen Brown's importance at evolving at cornerback, as a hoped-for priority among the young-uns. I had imagined that Eilar would get a look at CB at least a bit this year.

i really liked him at corner as well with his length and speed and if i remember his scouting reports he had pretty good ball skills.

All in the Grade of the tear. If they are truly shutting him down it would most likely be a ruptured LCL. Lucky to not have any other damage if that is in fact the case.

I think we should be fine at safety as we are 5 deep. Also, we are four deep at corner plus Brown and Atkins. Honestly I'm not even sure if Eilar would have seen the field this year.

I would have VERY much hoped for him to see the field, not only on special teams for speed and agility, but also for some game reps at corner. No matter how good Tee Shepard and Ronald Darby are at CB they will be arriving as zero college experience DBs with us needing to replace Gary and Robert at CBs. I'd feel a heck of a lot better if I'd seen two of our back-ups on the field successfully this season. Maybe Lo and Bennett or Jalen or Josh will do that, but Eilar was a prime choice to flower early.
