amazing how we’re just supposed to accept that low level P5 and G5 teams are more or less farm systems going forward. Just sucks for those schools.

They might do OK financially because of TV revenues but I expect attendance is just going to crater at these places.

I probably sound like a sore loser, but i really wouldn't want to root for a team of mercenaries every year. Program building and player development is one of the best parts about CFB.

Agreed. The only way you turn down mid round NFL money is if you think there is a pretty good chance you become an even higher pick. But it doesn’t even seem like he’s testing the waters. I don’t want to fall for expectation wise the Cain Madden was an All American thing.

Games this season are getting a double bump though from continued COVID rebound, and abundance of legal sports gambling.



I tend to agree with the original post. This sport succeeds in spite of itself, but success/popularity isn’t forever, and last I checked Minor League Baseball and Basketball aren’t exactly growing in popularity.

College Football is the only sport I watch that has (mostly) survived having kids (Goodbye NFL & Baseball; hellos F1 and EPL)

Time commitment to games was my biggest factor.

1) I was wrong on OSU-Mich relative to playoffs, but it was still a reg season record

2) that data seems to be only the NCG which has a lot of things working against it vs prior New Years Day tie-ups

3) that data is flat, with spikes around the most compelling storylines hard to see a trend

4) spent a bunch of time on that sports media data, and it’s not well laid out for comparing regular seasons over time, so I’m more unsure about direction of travel for absolute ratings.

5) the increasing notional value of media rights lends credence to increasing popularity, but I admit that I have not found the data that I thought was there

That and watching a kid develop for 3-4 years builds something of a relationship for the fans.

The head coach came by to visit the kid in class the other day and they were chatting about the portal. The coach at the D1 program told him the portal has completely changed the way they recruit in a way I didn't even consider.

He tells the kids he recruits who are a bit raw but have the measurables/athleticism to play P5 ball that he will coach them up so they can transfer into a P5 program after a year or two. Basically, these lower level D1 schools are now JUCOs.

I don’t think they care. It’s like trading prospects for established major leaguers. If the prospect really develops he could end up as good as the major leaguer you just got so don’t clutch prospects too tight.

There’s no limit on transfers so they will just reload with proven players every year.

Why does he say 13,000? Is he counting walk-ons? Or are there/were there still temporary exceptions for scholarship limits due to COVID? I thought that had ended.

Thought I read - on this very website! - that a lot of lesser-known guys in the portal are walk-ons trying to get a scholarship somewhere. Which would make sense, especially if they’re willing to go down the food chain a notch or two.
