IMO we need to get back to treating college sports as student athletes. No exception. Pick a school bc of the school not the coach, the system, the chance for a NC, etc. Anyone transferring that has not graduated sits a year period. You are a STUDENT athlete so be a student. The only exception should be if the school dropped your major/field of study. This is not the NFL so there is no free agency. Your NFL chances will not diminish bc your school has a bowl ban. You sign a contract with an NFL team that doesn’t change bc they fire the coach/coach leaves so get used to it if the NFL is your goal. You sign an LOI so you are committed until you graduate...period.

I feel like this is in line with the spirit of wishing college sports, esp CFB and MBB (the real moneymakers) were still amateurism. I think gowernd's post above is much closer to the reality of the situation. The NCAA is an ineffectual governing body, having minimal power. They're going to back down when pressed, for fear of being exposed for what they are: a racket posing as a governing body :usa:

If they don't lawyer up the next one, they're not playing to win.
Not sure I'd say they failed Alohi, but they failed the program.

I'd love to see them let anyone transfer after two years without sitting. If you want to go then, go. If you want to stay, stay, but you're locked in till you graduate or leave for the NFL.

ND and the NCAA may have been hesitant to go to court with Uncle Sam, in Alohi's case.

I think they helped Amir Carlisle with some legal support when he submitted his claim, so there's precedent.

Ohio State QB Matthew Baldwin latest Ohio State QB to enter transfer portal after arrival of Justin Fields

If you didn't believe it before, now you can etch it in stone: Ohio State's quarterback battle is over.

Former five-star and No. 2 overall prospect Justin Fields transferred from Georgia to Ohio State in January, and is running off Buckeyes quarterbacks left and right. Redshirt freshman Matthew Baldwin has entered his name in the transfer portal and will leave the program. His announcement comes less than a week after the Buckeyes wrapped up spring practice last weekend.

Baldwin's decision -- which is partly due to a desire to be closer to home, according to Lettermen Row -- comes just three months after Tate Martell announced his departure to Miami shortly after Fields arrived on campus.

Day said after the spring game that there wouldn't be a decision on the Buckeyes starting quarterback yet, but Baldwin's departure all but confirms that Fields will be the man in Columbus in 2019. As a true freshman at Georgia behind Jake Fromm in 2018, Fields went 27 of 39 for 328 yards and four touchdowns, and added 266 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

West Virginia transfer Chris Chugunov is the only other scholarship quarterback on Ohio State's roster at this time. Chugunov went 43 of 90 for 536 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Mountaineers in 2017.

Miami Hurricanes QB Tate Martell likely had influence on new NCAA Transfer rules

2019 Transfer Portal, arranged by position.

Deondre Francois, Kasim Hill, Alex Malzone, Matt Fink, etc haven't found homes. Ohio State is at 85 scholarship players.

Clemson confirms RB Tavien Feaster enters transfer database
By John Taylor | Apr 24, 2019 8:49 PM CDT

Clemson has, more than likely, seen its depth in a talented backfield take a hit.

With rumors swirling earlier in the day, Clemson confirmed Wednesday evening that Tavien Feaster has entered the NCAA transfer database and is looking to leave the Tigers. The running back will graduate from the university in August and intends to “continue his college career somewhere else,” Dabo Swinney said in a portion of a statement released by the football program.

Feaster could always pull his name from the portal and remain with the Tigers, although that doesn’t seem likely at this point.

“We appreciate Tavien for everything he brought to Clemson University and our program and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward,” the head coach said in closing out his statement.

Feaster will apparently finish the Clemson portion of his playing career with 1,330 career rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 222 carries, as well as 183 receiving yards and one touchdown on 23 receptions. The Spartanburg, SC, native started 11 of the 41 games in which he appeared for the Tigers.

As a grad transfer, Feaster would be eligible to play immediately at another FBS school. The upcoming season will be the back’s final year of eligibility.

Please, please, please ND coaching staff. At least give him a call and tell him next season he could be in Troy Pride's spot after he sits out. He was in the running for one of the starting CB spots at UF. He's a 6'1'' CB that's as talented as it gets. If I had to guess I'd bet he ends up at USC, UCLA or somewhere closer to home, but you never know.

His original recruitment had a lot of drama. IIRC, USC had to cut ties with him because of impermissible benefits. Not sure if that will be a factor in where he goes next.

They could meet with him, he'd certainly be a great addition but only the staff can make that call. Athletically, it'd be great to add a surefire player to this roster.

strange but true Deondre Francois transfers to FAU..as a walk on.

Maybe not so strange given his off the field issues but hard to believe no one willing to give him a scholarship in this era of 2nd, third and fourth chances.

He is a graduate transfer with immediate eligibility.

Reportedly, Bru McCoy is re-transferring back to USC from Texas. Or is that untransferring? Does he sit out two years now? Or none? Who are the bagmen involved and are we waiting for a counter offer?

And yet some still want open transfers w/o having to sit out a year. Just think of the possibilities !!!

West Virginia is burning

https://www.espn.com/college-footba.../three-west-virginia-safeties-transfer-portal

West Virginia safety Kenny Robinson entered his name in the transfer portal on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, junior safety Derrek Pitts, who was projected to start alongside Robinson, also entered his name in the transfer portal, as did redshirt sophomore safety E.J. Brown.

Robinson was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in the 2018 season, playing in all 12 games for the Mountaineers, and he was expected to have a significant role on their defense for 2019. The 6-foot-2 safety was tied for second in the conference with four interceptions in 2018 and is currently the career active leader in interceptions for West Virginia with seven.

He played in all 13 games in his true freshman season in 2017 and every game in 2018, so if Robinson decides to transfer, he will have two years of eligibility remaining with an option to take a redshirt if necessary.

Pitts, who played in 12 games for the Mountaineers last season, started two games and returned a blocked field goal 72 yards for a touchdown against Iowa State. Brown played in 11 games in 2018, primarily on special teams.

In total, 15 West Virginia players have added their names to the transfer portal since January, according to a source. That list includes wide receiver Dillon Spalding, offensive lineman Matt Jones and defensive lineman Tyrese Allen.

One Dumb Year Was Enough: NCAA curbs the stupid transfer monster it created and condoned

From another source:
The complete list of changes:

1. When a student-athlete transfers because he or she “no longer has the opportunity to participate” at their previous school, there must be documentary evidence that the student-athlete is in good academic standing and making progress toward a degree. Also, the previous school must indicate where the student-athlete was dismissed from the team or could have returned to the team.

2. When a student-athlete transfers because he or she believes he or she “is the victim of egregious behavior directly impacting his or her health, safety or well-being,” the new school must provide documentation on how this is being addressed at the new school. In addition, the previous school must provide a statement from the athletic to that effect.

3. When a student-athlete seeks to transfer in order to be closer to an ill family member, the new school must provide “contemporaneous medical documentation from the treating physician showing how the family member is debilitated” as well as how the student-athlete will help provide care for the family member. The new school must also be within 100 miles of the ill family member.

4. When a student-athlete seeks to transfer closer to home in case of their own illness, debilitating injury or mental health condition, the school must provide documentation regarding the need to do so. The new school must also be within 100 miles of the student’s home.

Former five star LB Eyabi Anoma, from Alabama’s Class of 2018 is transferring. He has not yet been listed in the Transfer Portal. It has been speculated that Anoma may end up transferring to Maryland where former Alabama coach, Mike Locksley, is now HC. Anoma is not registered for classes at Alabama. Anoma is from Baltimore.

Anoma is the third undergraduate scholarship player to transfer from Alabama this offseason.
TE Kedrick James and quarterback Lane Hatcher (Arkansas State) are the other two. James was suspended for Bama's bowl game (as was OL Elliott Baker who was a graduate transfer this year.) Hatcher was originally a walkon.

Alabama lost five scholarship players to graduate transfers in quarterback Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma), offensive lineman Richie Petitbon (Illinois), defensive back Kyriq McDonald (Cincinnati), offensive lineman Elliot Baker, and LS Scott Meyer (Vanderbilt).

Anoma may have been homesick or possibly academics problems. Today was the last day to register for classes. Hatcher probably wanted more than to be a practice squad QB. Meyer was the second string Long Snapper, playing in only one game. Outside of the two players who incurred discipline from Saban, the others seem to havev transferred with their degrees for PT.
