I've seen my share of Fighting Irish football over the years... I was wondering what your Top 10 games were since the 1966 Michigan State game. State the reason why if not obvious. I realize that goes back awhile, but it seemed to mark the dividing line of "modern" college football... to me at least.

I won't give my Top 10 right away, but 2 games that always stand out in my memory were:

1978 Cotton Bowl vs. Texas (undefeated and with Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell)
1988 "Catholics vs Convicts" game vs. Miami - Edge of your seat thriller...

'93 v FSU
'92 Sugar Bowl v Florida
'92 Senior Day, Snow Ball Penn State

those games instantly popped into my head as some personal favorites.

Also any game that involved Ray Zellers steamrolling DB's....

1988 against USC in the Coliseum. I was there. Tony Rice was awesome. The defense was dominant. I have to give the other 9 alot of thought!

This may be mine too. And the one where Tate jumped into the MSU band. I was lucky enough to be at both. With the Washington OT game we were sitting in the front of the tunnel side endzone, where the OT was played. Awesome game.

Love that play, probably my favorite all time. BTW just noticed that Derek Mayes had a nice block on the run.

Some underrated ones that pop into my head (after 1988) are:

1996 @ Texas (ND was written off, beat top ten UT in Austin)
1998 vs LSU (Thrilling end of game, despite JJ blowing his knee out in the end zone)
2002 @ FSU (Heavy underdogs went into Tallahassee and thumped FSU)
2005 @ scUM (Huge upset that vaulted Weis into savior-status, although short-lived)

September 16th, 1989. #1 ND vs. #2 Michigan. ND wins the game, finishes the season 12-1. But more importantly, the most electrifying college football player I've seen in my lifetime returns two gut punch returns for touchdowns. One of those games from my childhood I remember that made me realize my innate love for ND.

I was wondering if anyone was going to throw this game in, I was about to. I still remember my dorm RA running down to my dorm room thinking something was wrong as I sat there and screamed at my TV during that drive.

this was a great ending, but for me I was very upset while watching this game. I was so upset that I walked away and started doing somthing in the garage. I couldnt watch the last 10-15mins, I remember being very upset that ND couldnt get anything going against UCLA. ND had done next to nothing all game long.....

Then My GF finds me in the garage and says, "they just scored." I was still kinda fuming over how bad the team was, that I couldnt enjoy the win because ND couldnt shake lowly UCLA.

The 88' Convicts game is now the only game to have higher ratings than last year's LSU/Alabama regular season matchup.

Pretty sad/frustrating that we as ND fans think of a 2006 win over a ****** UCLA team as one of the best ND moments since 1966.

Bush Push game was still the best ND game I've ever seen. The fact that we lost doesn't change it.

No way I would put this in a Top 10 game list. The game was an absolute stinker for most of the afternoon. Was the final score epic? Hell yes, it was a Top 10 play for the Weis era. Ultimately it was UCLA though, and we were crapping the bed all game.

I gotta agree with the 2002 MSU game. MSU had our number more often than not before that game. We went into East Lansing and Battle came up with that great catch. Just a year or two before Battle had been our QB and was pretty good in his own right, almost beating #1 Nebraska at home with a broken throwing wrist. Was just a great game for Battle and backup Dillingham. Man, I miss hearing Tony Roberts:

2002 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State - YouTube

As far as other great games, I picked a lot of rivalry games mostly:

'05 USC - Never heard that stadium louder, ever. Ultimately we get screwed at the end, no game left such a sour taste in my mouth. Gotta admit it was something to watch.
'93 FSU - Epic game...only disappointing part was the following weeks loss to BC that blew our chances at going undefeated and playing for the NC. FSU should have never gone.
2010 USC - Not because either team was particularly great today, but the damn streak finally ended and in nail biting fashion. Not either team's best, but it was entertaining and a few players stepped up in big ways when they were needed most.
2010 Utah - Coming off a loss to Tulsa and a drubbing by Navy, there were very low expectations going into this one. We also hadn't beaten a ranked team in forever. Utah had lost the previous week to TCU I believe and they were coming in pissed off. We ended up running wild on them. It may be because I was slightly intoxicated for this one, which I rarely am on game day, but it was just a lot of fun.
2009 MSU - First home win against MSU since '93. Close match that came down to McKarthy's save at the end. Golden Tate also jumped into the Spartan band after a TD, excellent.
'06 MSU - What can be said about this game? Defense was poor on both sides, but a crazy 4th quarter comeback and a Mike Valenti meltdown on the radio made this one a classic.
'08 Michigan - Not a close game, or a highly anticapted one, but after the horrible '07 season and losing badly to Michigan that year, a little rain in South Bend totally ruined the game for the Wolverines. We were soaked after the game, but it was completely worth it. Plus it was comical to watch Michigan try to hold onto the ball. 6 Wolverine turnovers, and probably have a dozen other drops.
2000 Nebraska - Mentioned this one earlier. Gutsy performance by Battle, we lost to #1 Nebraska in overtime, but still a great game in my opinion. I don't think anyone expected us to compete in this one, and our QB was injured all game.
'88 Miami - One of the earliest games I still remember, but very vaguely. I've gone back and watched it on Youtube several times since. I was just 6 years old at the time, but I remember some of the images. Jimmy Johnson fuming at the end is priceless.

My personal list would look like this... not exactly all of them fit "the greatest" mold... just those i hold most dear.

10- 06 MSU
9- 96 Texas
8- 89 USC
7- 92 Sugar bowl
6- 78 (Title Game) Cotton Bowl UT
5-88 Miami
4- 92 Penn St.
3- 93 FSU
2- 88 (title game) Fiesta Bowl WVU
1- 73 (Titile game) Sugar Bowl Bama (Maybe the greatest game ever really)

The Sun Bowl holds a special place too as it was my first ND game...
The comeback against OU in South Bend about ten years back holds a special place also.

Wait, I'm the first one to even mention the '73 Sugar bowl??

Suprising,... I would say that is definately one of two greatest games ND played since 66, the other being CvC 88 imho.

I was just about the post the exact same thing.

1973 Sugar Bowl Highlights - YouTube

Clements to Weber is one of the most iconic plays in CFB history, and maybe the greatest play in Notre Dame football history.

The game predates my existence by 15 years, but I have watched the YouTube highlights countless times. My dad remembered the entire Notre Dame team from the guards to the cornerbacks. He says this was the GOAT game until Catholics/Convicts.

1977 vs. USC - "Green Jersey Game"changed into after warmups (49-19)

1979 Cotton "Ice" Bowl vs. Houston- Comeback in 2nd half after being down 34-12... last score in closing seconds (35-34)

1980 vs. Michigan - 51 yard FG as time expires (29-27)

Although it was a loss, and still rests very hard on this young heart of mine, the 2005 game against the school from California is the best game I've ever seen in person. One play goes our way and you all know the rest. Still gives me goosebumps just thinking of that game. Even had a sign make it in College Gameday that Saturday morning. Hell of a game and the best college atmosphere I've ever felt!

Although that UCLA game does bring back memories. I was a freshman in high school and thought I was a "big shot" in high school when I was making out with my girlfriend and had that game on. As soon as I heard "Quinn pumps and hits Samardzija" I pushed the girlfriend off and focused on the tv. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING tops Notre Dame football.
