Jeez. You guys talk like Rees had the 45th ranked recruiting class and was pulling rabbits out of his house playing teams with top 5 recruiting classes. That entire time what was Notre Dame’s worst ranked class? Like 14th? Compare that to the teams ND played those years week in, week out. You talk like ND was playing the cutting edge of competition each week and Rees was parting the Red Sea making the impossible happen.

Fact is, the level of recruits that he had UNDERPERFORMED if anything compared to the competition they played. Way too many close wins against ho-hum competition.

But of course, that couldn’t have had anything to do with the OC right?

I'm not saying this is you, but Rees has been divisive going back to the first time he stepped on the field for us 15 years ago, and I do think some of the people who didn't like him as OC, and don't like him now, were the same people who didn't like him as our quarterback in 2010 and 2011. There's a sense - when he was a player and when he was a coach - that we could/should have had someone "better."
I was at the Tulsa game Rees’ freshman year when he came in for a hurt Dayne Crist. The offense immediately looked better and Rees was making decisions and getting the ball out quickly. The pick at the end was all on Kelly as we could have just kicked a field goal for the win. He went on the win the next 4 games to end the season. My recollection is people were very excited about Rees as a player. 2011 was when it became more evident that he wasn’t a top talent that we probably needed to compete for titles. He stepped in multiple times in 2012 to keep our undefeated season alive. I really don’t recall all the Rees hate back then that people bring up now. Definitely not his freshman year.

This is me, 100%... I didn't hate him as a player but defn wanted someone better. I didn't hate him as a OC but his recruiting sucked and wanted someone better. Did not under any condition want him to be HC of ND.

I want you to go through the 2020 and 2019 recruiting classes, the last two classes that Long was responsible for. Tell me how many offensive guys panned out. Team rankings don't always align great in hindsight. There's a reason Rees was forced to start a ton of freshmen and sophomore for two years. It led to a lot of mental mistakes on the field, but we still managed to win a lot of games. Alt, Fisher, Estime, Evans, Price, Love, and some guys that would help us get to the championship last year like Coogan, Spindler, Greathouse, and now Carr. It paid dividends and those final classes Rees helped recruit with Freeman are our stars today.

A lot of those guys had 2 years as starters or saw significant playing time, and to counter something @greyhammer90 said I don't think Tommy screwed us by leaving. Would he have called the OSU game better? I surely think so. Parker was gifted one of the most experienced offenses in college football going into '23, and outside of the young receiver talent we were pretty stacked. Rees left the offense in much better shape than when he took over, case in point the upperclassmen currently starting for us today as well as Carr being the QB. He was going to move on eventually, it's hard to fault a guy that's given 10 years of his life to ND football before he was even 30.

I really wrote him off when he recruited Angeli rather than Allar. Hahaha.

I get it, but Tommy, Cleveland?

Wish you the best luck. You'll at least have a creative offense game-caller.

Their offense was even worse with his play-calling. Never seen a person fall up as much as he has,

Nah, what you've seen is someone who has achieved more with less. That's why he continues to get promotions.

Cleveland has zero offensive talent. Two rookie QBs, neither of which are particularly that good, and the cancer Deshaun Watson is still there because they can't afford to cut him. There's really nothing after QB either, no healthy Nick Chubb anymore, Njoku caught the injury bug. Jeudy could still be good, but he doesn't have a QB that can throw to him. Even the OL, which used to always be solid for Cleveland, is trash. Cleveland's OL is 31st out of the 32 teams, only the Raiders are worse.

Bill Walsh couldn't win with that kind of talent.

I just want Tommy to have a competitive roster for one season so we can find out if he sucks or not and stop arguing about it.

Tommy may get it by default, because I don't know if anyone else will want the job.

I would say the offense they had at Alabama was pretty good. Jalen Milroe was raw at the beginning of the season, but he became a Heisman hopeful by the end. If their Center could snap the ball they probably beat Michigan in the playoff.

buddy aint ever seen the Pyne tape and it shows

Looks like a Rees throw. Actually the one that helped us out against Stanford. I think a 15 yard Hail Mary that we caught. Tommy has no juice on any throw over 25 yards. Made Drew Lyne look like a gun slinger.

Do you mean bowl game? That was also a shitty Michigan team.

Guy has been no better than a C+ coach everywhere he’s been. Usually not as good as his predecessor. He was never better than a C+ QB. This is like following the political career of Kamala, Gavin and Joe. F up to move up. He’s better than all those though.
I think you mean Trump. 6 bankruptcies, guilty of sexual assault, 34 felonies, the list goes on.

I wouldn't say zero.

72 catches for 731 yards, 6 TDs, 13 GS. 21 year old rookie. Browns rookie reception record. Was as good of a tight end as there was in America but played for Bowling Green so nobody cared.

Loveland had similar numbers for Chicago with Caleb Williams on a Division Champion. This dude has been too anonymous for as good as he is because he's been stuck in Ohio his whole life.

People still have TDS (Tommy derangement syndrome) on here?

When Rees was hired at ND, they said it was because he was BK's guy
When Rees was stolen by Alabama, people said he was failing upwards
When he was then hired to the NFL, #reasons
Now he's being interviewed for a head coaching job and you guys are still on your schtick.

It's amazing how wrong people can be, but instead of acknowledgement, they double down with the certainty that with enough time, they'll be proven correct.

Look at his coaching trajectory, it's been amazing how much he's been able to dup everyone but the eagle-eyed posters on da message boardz.

Tommy had already verballed to ND and I went to his first game his senior year at Lake Forest. He threw four picks against Palatine HS. I could have never imagined at that point where it would all go. I figured to myself "Andrew Hendrix will never lose snaps to this guy."
