I'll chime in with my 2 cents... I grew up in Pittsburgh, and lived in NYC for a while. I have been in Atlanta for 20 years. I don't see the South as more racist than the North, actually the opposite. But again I'm in a very wealthy North Fulton bubble, so I can't speak for Forsyth County (KKK) or South Georgia. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You're dodging. First things first. You said the part about my school electing a Jewish girl as homecoming queen was totally made up. That the subject of our first bet. Don't dodge that or try to weasel out of it. It's a simple, direct, easily proven or disproven assertion. Put up $1000 with Whiskey (I'll do the same) and as soon as he has our funds, I'll provide him with unambiguous, irrefutable proof that it's true. No, you don't get to see the evidence first. Only after you put up the money. If you knew what town, you'd never follow through on sending Whiskey the money.

Do that, and I'll gladly accept whatever amount you want to bet on the rest of what I claimed. As I mentioned in a previous post, it's just as true, but more time-consuming and complicated to prove. The Jewish homecoming queen assertion is easy and quick to prove.

Now, you ran your mouth and walked your dumb ass into no-win corner. Back your big mouth up and make the bet and take your punishment, or admit you said something genuinely stupid. I'd recommend the latter as the smart move, but I'll gladly allow you to buy me my next guitar. No need to twist and spin and dodge. Man up one way or the other.

Agreed, I lived in California for 20 years and the south 10+ years and that is my experience..But whatever...

First, he specifically called out the Jewish homecoming queen as made up. Second, I've offered to make a second bet on all the rest of my assertion after the first bet is settled. Third, if you really believe I'm just spinning a yarn, jump in and take a piece of the betting action. I'll cover another $1000 gladly. Same offer. Whiskey holds the money and judges the truth of my claim.

I’m not betting you. Apparently you’re telling the truth about a single Jewish family in your town. I guess if they’re a doctor then it’s ok…

You are lying about segregation in your town pre-1965. It’s easily provable.

Seriously confused by the motivations here. Why do you care about the Jewish daughter of a doctor who won homecoming queen? And about his potentially segregated high school leading up to and including 1965?

I'm really confused why this back and forth is occurring between the two of you and I don't get the motivations? Is there a racial subtext to this back and forth exchange?

There is no snark in this message, I'm genuinely confused why this is so contentious.

That's a wise move. However, there was more than one Jewish family in my town when I was growing up, and none of them had a doctor in it. You REALLY need to stop assuming stuff you know nothing about.

Second, I said nothing about there being no segregation in my hometown prior to 1965. I said I never saw any Whites Only or No Colored People type signs there when I was a kid, there were no stores or restaurants closed to Blacks when I was a kid, and that neither my mom nor an elderly black friend recall any of those things in our town when they were kids either in the '40s or '50s. There was some segregation in housing and the schools until the late '60s, but that's a different matter than what I mentioned. Don't misquote me or misrepresent what I said.

The older black friend I mentioned in earlier posts likes to tell a story about this. I think I've shared this story before in here, but it bears repeating, so forgive me. He went to Cleveland years ago to visit a relative. He said her husband was a know-it-all who'd probably never set foot outside the Cleveland city limits. He said to my friend, "I don't see how you can stand to live down there in Alabama. Black folks gotta live in shacks in the woods and run from the Klan and can't go in stores or restaurants and all." My friend was like, "What??? What the hell are you talking about? Shacks in the woods? Man, I live in a nice house in town and can live in any neighborhood I want if I can afford the house. I can go in any store or restaurant in the state. The Klan??? Nobody's heard from the Klan since 1970. What are you talking about?" He said the guy then said, "No, no, I know how it really is. I've seen it on TV."

You can't fix that level of ignorance. It's willful. My friend still says his cousin's husband is the stupidest MF'er he's ever met. Unfortunately, there are people who believe that sort of nonsense. They're the same folks who also think they're dog experts because they've watched a couple of episodes of Scooby-Do.
