i suppose the real thing is that the title "Notre Dame Man" needs to be properly defined. It means many different things to many different posters

This is true. I look at everything in the big picture just not stats.

I know this might come as a surprise i voted for Tommy.

But he gave it his all. He stayed when he could have left. He did help the QB that beat him out. I doubt we win as many games as we did with out him.

And this may be a surprise, but I voted no. I guess it just comes down to how selective you want it to be.

I love Tommy. I think he's a been a huge part of turning the fortunes of this program. He's been selfless and an incredible team guy. He's also just been a decent to pretty good quarterback. Did more with his abilities than nearly anyone else, for certain.

Again, it just depends on how many of these guys we name. A couple of them every year? Tommy's one of them for sure. One every 2-3 years? Probably not.

This is the criteria I have set in my mind(don't know if that's accurate or not).

Manti and Louis both stand out to a much greater degree than Tommy does.

And I'll take it one step further, Manti much more than Nix. At least to me, and it's not even close.

I know Nix is talented and will likely be a 1st round draft pick, but Manti was a better CFB player. I get that Nix was double teamed a lot, but does that excuse you from any production? I think he had like 20 tackles this year and 1 sack if I remember correctly.

How many games did Nix even play in throughout his career?

I don't think you need to define what Notre Dame Man means. Everyone can interpret it however they want to and vote according to their own understanding.

All we need to define is what percentage of the vote is necessary to achieve the designation. IMO, it should be 90% or higher.

I think since there is this much debate about him, then it should be obvious that he isn't deserving.

I voted 'no'... for no other reason than when I opened this thread, I checked the poll results and instantly felt bad for the 'no's........

I voted yes.

Obviously, a "Notre Dame Man," just taking the phrase at face value, should be anyone who was a part of the ND community, had an impact on other members of the community while he was a part of it, and was shaped by the Notre Dame experience. If people want to change a player's thread title to give him a "Hall of Fame" designation, then "Notre Dame Man" strikes me as the wrong phrase. For instance, was KLM not a "Notre Dame Man"? He was a captain and leader on a team that went to the NCG. Personally, I always thought that "Notre Dame Legend", which I believe was the original suggestion, would be a better phrase. "Notre Dame Man" seems to apply to too many people.

On the other hand, if we want to change a player's thread title when he has 1) been a key contributor, 2) stood out as a leader and/or dynamic personality on the team, and 3) given ND all he has, then "Notre Dame Man" is a pretty good label. If that's what it means, then I am all for Tommy getting the designation.

I vote "yes".

I think that designation should represent a player that made a significant impact to our program, was part of a spectacular team and was a leader.

It's not just whether they were an all-american player. Tommy was a consummate leader, even when he was benched for Golson. Instead of quitting, he exemplified the Notre Dame spirit and became a teacher/mentor for Everett. Even came in and helped us win games when the stage was too big for the young Golson.

I truly believe our program wouldn't be in the state it is in now without the contributions of Tommy Rees.

How does Tommy become a Notre Dame man? He wasn't even a Captain yet some of you say he was the leader of the team?

90%? No way, 2/3 majority should be sufficient.

I think naming 2-3 guys each year as "Notre Dame Men" is kind of nice. Certainly they're all deserving of the title if they stick with the program for 4 years, but I understand we're recognizing gentlemen that have faced some obstacle or adversity apart from the other players, or they made some sort of special contribution beyond the other roster members. Tommy fits that mold, so would Spond for his tutoring of Jaylen.

anyone who goes to ND is a Notre Dame Man/Woman.

shame on the OP

As the OP, I do think Tommy Rees should get the title. A discussion/debate started up in the Tommy Rees thread and I was curios as to how the I.E members felt about the subject.

Tommy Rees:

1.) Graduated from Notre Dame
2.) Played in a few dozen football games for the Fighting Irish from freshman year to senior season.
3.) Did it all with guts and steely-eyed determination.

As far as this Shanty Irishman is concerned, he's a friggin' Notre Dame Man. A legend? No. But a Notre Dame Man? Hell, yes.
