Well, by some people logic on here Jimbo Fisher should be fired after this game. There D looks Terrible and they are getting embarrassed. If Kelly's hand picked QB camE out and looked like this some people on here would go ballistic.

If Kelly had won a natty like Fisher we'd be singing a different tune. But he hasn't.

He's likely protecting BVG for now, but one way or another BVG will probably be let go...Kelly will have to protect his job and will have to find a scapegoat.

BS.

BVG should be packing his bags THIS WEEKEND not at the end of the year.

That is ridiculous.

Kelly waits that long and HE is the scapegoat because everyone will be wondering why he keeps a staff of coaches who CAN NOT COACH.

Where is he originally from?
He was born in Ohio and moved to Simi Valley, CA when he was 6.

Is he a Southern boy?
No.

Would he fit in with Notre Dame culture?
He is very smart.

Would he fit in the Midwest?
He was born in Ohio and has lots of family in Cincinnati, so yes.

Is he Catholic? If not how does he feel about Catholics?
It is interesting that both of the top coaches are Catholic, and yet they aren't here! I doubt that he is Catholic, he played at Cal Lutheran. I don't know how he feels about Catholics, but he didn't write American Freedom and Catholic Power, so how bad can he be?

How far does his recruiting reach go? If only Texas I don't think he would work out, unless he hired a geographically diverse staff.
What are you talking about? He has been a coordinator at OSU. When Urban Meyer was hired at Florida, did his "recruiting reach" extend beyond BGSU and Utah?

Is he an home table human being?
I assume? He is married with kids.

In other words, ND could get him in a heartbeat IF they wanted to try.

This is NOT debatable.

And he has worked MIRACLES at Houston, who has not been good since Andre Ware won the Heisman.

Kelly made some questionable decisions around last night's game. Van Gorder has a very very short rope. But the people calling for BK to be fired either:
A: Have somehow forgotten the wilderness we all wandered from 1997 until 2009
or
B: Have no idea what being head coach at Notre Dame is like the 352 days of the year when there isn't a football game to be coached so much as a program to be built and run.

Very few people are cut out to be Notre Dame's head football coach in this day and age. Brian Kelly is one of those people. I'm not saying we can't do better, but it's a high bar, and unless/until he starts to do poorly (which is not losing in overtime to a hyped AF Texas) I wouldn't go about running the guy off.

Why would you get rid of your DC if you aren't 100% sure the lapses weren't strategy?

This DB corp has a ton of youth on it. Talented youth. The sort of youth that will get better as the year goes on. The same largely goes for the LB corp, which has two new starters.

I for one am glad Kelly is trying to get back-to-back double-digit wins for the program and not decapitating his defensive staff. I want the program to hire a promising DC, but jesus lord wait until it's the right time to do it.

It's extremely debatable and none of us have a god damn clue what Herman wants. Hell a week ago it looked like the Texas job was opening and he'd walk into Austin as head coach in December.

Yeah agree with this 100%. As badly as I want BVG gone looking at the situation we gain nothing by firing him right now. Think about how bad that looks for recruits? How about the signal it sends about the direction of the program for this years team? It would basically be like throwing in the white towel after week one.

If Kelly intends on firing him at the end of the season he can take lots of his power away now and keep him on as a figurehead.

We gain nothing by giving him the boot right now, and every replacement that could actually help are all on coaching staffs.

I give Urbie credit for cold calling this stranger up and offering him the job. Granted, Meyer knew that he himself would be the actual coordinator for the time being, but it was a tremendous hire for him. One whose legend continues to grow.

I wonder if Kelly could make a hire like that?

What major, successful coach is going to come to a program, with albeit great resources that handicaps their ability to win? Make no mistake, that's what the higher standards achieve. You need a very specific type of person to agree to that, and most won't take the risk to their career when there are a plethora of other options that operate on the NCAA standard, or even below when it comes to obtaining talent for the football program. These days of thinking some well established coach is going to go from an easy scenario to a very difficult one at ND, just because we were great for decades is ridiculous. It's a pipe dream. It is never going to happen again. No elite coach will come here to be handicapped in their ability win. If we won't provide resources for a coach to get exactly what they need, in the talent department, we need to get coaches, like Kelly, who are up for the challenge of doing it at a higher standard.

Harbaugh went to Stanford... and won.

ND started 21 four star players against Texas. The only team that will out star ND this year is SC, they start 2 three star, 15 four star and 5 five stars. Kelly has higher rated HS talent on his roster than all but Bama, SC, OSU, FSU & LSU. If you have the 6th best talent in the country, which includes the best QB in the top 6, he should be no worse than 11-1 with this schedule. 10-2 he owes the school and the fans an apology for under-performing and should be able to keep his job. 9-3, he should be fired and hire Tom Herman, they can afford it.

Harbaugh's only heat coaching experience was at non-scholarship FCS San Diego. Hardly a big time coach at that time.

I 100% disagree, if he had won the Natty in 2012 when we got there. You guys would have even higher expectations and would be pissed we haven't won another one in the last 4 years. the Texas loss would be even a bigger deal in your eyes.

Damn you are tough on Kelly.

I would say right now JT Barrett is a better college QB than Kizer.

What those 5 teams have that ND doesn't have is a top end 5 star talent.

Lastly that superior QB you are referring to had to share reps for more than half the game last night. Sharing reps with a QB who you banged in the table for. Who you stood on you head for. Who stated Kelly should be fired for not starting Zaire. Who you said the whole locker room believed in Zaire more and that he is the emotional leader of the team. Who dropped a complete egg Lat night, not completely his fault though.

So in no way should you or anyone else be calling for Kelly's head if the team goes 9-3.

Lol sorry. the last question I had a typo. I meant is he an honorable human being.

So it sounds like he would be a nice fit for Notre Dame.

But, if offered the job at Notre Dame, LSU and TAMU I think he would take one of the two latters. Simply because it's easier to get recruits in and it's easier to win in general at those schools.

Yes true. I only focused on the second part regarding admissions.

They could get Herman if A&M isn't available this year, I guess throw Baylor in there too. Herman has coached in Texas all but 4 years of his career and I'm sure he recruited TX for Iowa St and OSU. He's plugged in there for sure. Just have to pay him to come to SB... and Kelly to leave. Will it happen. No.

It's close. I like them both.

True. But Texas beat them with just 1 five star, 11 four star, 9 three stars and an unrated walk on for starters.

Lastly that superior QB you are referring to had to share reps for more than half the game last night. Sharing reps with a QB who you banged in the table for. Who you stood on you head for. Malik deserved his shot. Kizer never beat him out until last night in the staff's eyesdating back from last season to spring through fall. I've already addressed the fact that I feel it's now DK's team until he leaves or is injured.

So in no way should you or anyone else be calling for Kelly's head if the team goes 9-3.

I mean more that there would be grounds to fire him based on his talent level vs the talent/experience level of his opposition on htis year's schedule. I'm sure if I go back and look at talent level, rankings, vegas odds, etc and compared how CBK has done against the expected outcome like Formeau's FEI, I'll bet the house CBK's underperformed against the line. I wonder if Stanford has? I bet I go back to 2010 and almost all of Stanford's losses are to SC, Oregon and ND. Stanford beats who they are supposed to. ND has a problem with that.

CBK runs a good program, it's professional and if I was an alum, I'd be proud. As a fan who can look at the team the same why I do the Bears, I don't really care about the why's and the can'ts, I just want a winner. I know there are more hurdles but whatever, ND was there in 2012, was a few plays away last year and Stanford's knocked on the door a few times too. It can be done. It isn't gonna happen but it should if he keeps under-performing.

Stanford loses to lesser teams:

2012: Lost to 7-6 Washington
2013: Lost to 5-7 Utah
2014 Stanford was 8-5 overall: All the teams they lost to were ranked teams at the time they played.
2015: Lost to NorthWestern. But Northwestern was 10-3 and a solid team.

You are correct only 2 maybe 3 hiccup loses to teams not named USC, Oregon or Notre Dame.

I don't want to "dump Kelly," He is easily the best coach ND has had since Holtz... but I also reject this notion that this is as good as it can ever get again. There is a coach out there, Herman, Patterson or some guy we don't even know of yet, who can take ND a step further, no doubt in my mind.

You do realize that Notre Dame wasn't the only top ten program to lose this weekend right?

#3 Oklahoma
#4 Florida State is down 21-6 right now
#5 LSU

#10 Notre Dame

And #2 Clemson and #9 Tennessee looked like hot garbage against Auburn and Appalachian State, respectively.

I swear you guys must only watch Alabama and Ohio State and think nobody else has issues with their roster and staff...

Were all playing ranked teams better than UT. Houston, Ole Miss, and WIS are all ranked.

Clemson will get it together.

I've though Tennessee has been overrated from the start. So to me, ehhh.

And while I like Kelly, he's not going to win one here.

I think the next coach does.

And anyone who says that they don't want Herman...you're lying. I'd take him in a NY min.

Look at what he has done with that roster. ONE 5 star recruit in the history of the school.

Guy can coach. And gets every drop outta his players.

I don't either.

I was just stating that if Kelly were to get the axe, we'd be fools to not take Herman. Also, I'd take Herman right now over Brian Kelly if I'm another school. Not even close.

I see no issues with how Kelly runs his program. I think ND's best bet (by far) is trying to fix the current issues. There is no reason for firing everyone to get the tabula rasa when the program (and personnel) do so many things very well.

Two years ago Kelly went outside his coaching tree and found a bright, young mind to be his OC and coach up the quarterbacks. It's been a home run hire. I hope he can make one half as good to run this team's defense.

Everyone talks about scheme for obvious reasons but my biggest beef with the current DC is that he doesn't even involve himself in recruiting. IMO, a guy who cannot recruit is a guy who cannot communicate and motivate. He may be a genius in the meeting room but if he can't disseminate the concepts to his players it's all pointless.

Yeah, I think Herman has basically proved himself to be an "alpha dog" college coach in two short seasons. I truly believe that.

I don't see how Kelly can win here either unless there are wholesale changes on defense... both scheme and recruiting. I think it's probably a two-year rebuild on that side of the ball.

The D has to get better. We need to change the philosophy. And that starts with BVG. I'm sure he's a great guy, and has had his moments, but his system reminds me of Rob Ryan....good to you for a couple of years, then trainwreck.

Time to move on
