Why do you think we're not adding a portal WR? That seems like a given.

Well, we added the #1 transfer portal safety on the market this past offseason. We've added at least 1 dude from the portal for the past 3 years. I really have no clue why it's impossible that ND does it again this offseason, beyond message board doom posting.

The problem is that — unless they land a transfer QB or Angeli comes out of nowhere to be the real deal — there are no short term answers on offense. At least not in this scheme. Maybe you could run a different scheme with Buchner and be successful.

Then even if you get a good QB, you have to deal with the fact that you have maybe one total functional WR on offense in Merriweather. So unless you are adding someone in the transfer portal (spoiler alert: you aren’t) where is the upside for the offense next year?

Im not sure why everyone is surprised by this? Over the years othe schools have, in addition to their cash dispersants to recruits and families, have employed all kinds of roster management techniques that ND simply cant or wont do. The Portal is no different. We dont grey shirt, take JuCo transfers or even many grad transfers. Expecting ND to take 5 or so portal transfers is asking for disappointment.

I'm not asking them to. I know they won't, therefore I'm disappointed. People ask why we don't compete with the elite teams in games and for National Championships. The answer is the University of Notre Dame itself.

I actually think ND will start getting more lenient with transfers because they won't have a choice. If 10+ kids transfer out every year, you have to fill the spots. You can't enter a season with like 70 kids on scholarship. That would immediately drop the facade that ND cares about football and it would be obvious. I would think that would cause the donation basket to get significantly lighter.

The one time transfer rule is like a year old. This is a different world. If ND was losing its backup QB (which usually ended up being the starting QB at some point), a couple skill players, and a ton of depth pieces every year, those 10 win seasons would have been 7-8.

Also it is a zero sum game. The opponents are all taking advantage of it. If ND is not, it is a huge handicap.

OTOH, when our football graduation rate dips from the ~95 percent rate it has long been to 70 percent b/c we’re taking a bunch of transfers who don’t have transferable credits to graduate on time, I think that may also cause the donation basket to lighten.

It’s a tricky balance. I agree our stance toward undergrad transfers is a big competitive disadvantage. And maybe we do need to let go of the idea that we expect football players to graduate. But there’s also a growing sense across college football that the current wide-open transfer system is insanity and maybe something changes soon and we can ride it out a few years. I dunno.

Yes they were. Maybe you missed it but people have been complaining about jucos and transfers since I’ve been watching ND football going back to the 80’s.

Once again we didn’t lose a single key contributor to the portal this off season. Even with a coaching change of almost the entire staff. So who you kicking off each year to account for a roster that does not turnover at the rate others do either?

Some people were. I said at the time that it was absurd and would lead to consolidation of talent at football factories with lax rules willing to buy transfers.

It didn't turn over like that last year, but there will be years when it does. Ideally, ND will already have procedures in place to fill the empty roster spots so they don't have guys playing two ways like it's 1942.

Yep. And the big spenders can just buy the best players from the mid-majors.
If I were a Pitt fan, for instance, I’d be pissed as hell about the Addison situation. I know the NCAA isn’t really a democracy but I don’t know how the majority of football programs put up with this.

Michigan added a center (from Virginia), backup DT (we looked at and chose Smith), and DE.

Where are all these enviable B1G schools adding 6 - 8 guys? Michigan St and Indiana?

Sure but adding 2 portal WRs makes Buchner's (and Pyne's) lives a heck of a lot easier, and our offense a lot more dynamic. If ND succeeded in landing Charlie Jones and also brought in Matt Landers (another Grad transfer....) and nothing else changed, I'd put good money on ND being 5-1 right now.
