I guess what I'm saying is that our Mike LB read the play perfectly and was just too slow to do anything about it.
WWND?
What would Nyles do?
ha

I don't know...I've always taught to secure and close. Do your job, but get to the damned ball. That move the back put on was to elude Baratti. It wasn't like he cut back out of the area where I wouldn't expect Barrati to close, load up, and shoot his guns. Nicki stood up...he mirrored, but never attacked, which allowed the back to get him. ...you always do your job, expect everyone else to, but you always look to close the deal. He was obviously hesitant. Thats not saying he was scared. He was caught in the middle some, indecisive. I believe a Barrati that had 7 games in, makes that play.
Now, should we expect him to lose that battle...yea. Too much time away from game time. He'll be ok. But IMHO he didn't play that particular play well....regardless of his responsibility.

No. It was an example of a backup not wanting to blow an opportunity and not being aggressive. Baratti took an outside line to keep the back from turning the corner, instead of taking a more straight line to ball carrier that would have put him in position to make the stop. Once he took the outside line, his fate was sealed.
I think this Temple team is the best team Notre Dame has played all year. Yes I think they played better than Clemson did against the Irish.
It's not like I disagree....... from Baratti's player thread:
My objection was to this constant idea that people have that playing football is so easy that they can come in here and just pile on the kids who are trying so hard to play it, to play it well, and to represent themselves and their University well, all while demonstrating that you CAN "do it right" and succeed........... Are you hearing this, OSU, Alabama, USC, Baylor, et al?
I missed large parts of the game? Were there any injuries? Is CJ Saunders and Day ok?

Love my Irish. But I must admit I enjoyed watching Matakevich for Temple. Plays the game like a caged animal, and is a tackling machine. He was always in the picture around the ball. I hope he does well at the next level.
Either they are, or our line looked liked shit against an AAC team..
Refs kept it close as well.
Temple did surprise me with their effort and D
We won but no way is this a top ten caliber team.
Yep no way. Poor preparation against a lessor opponent.
Sanders came back in and played.I missed large parts of the game? Were there any injuries? Is CJ Saunders and Day ok?
That's a good point. James O got sucked inside and was in bad position on that play. One thing that drove me crazy was that we were crushing the right side of the line playing straight up. Then on that big QB keeper to the right on the read option it looked like Cage and Rochelle were on a stunt and ran into each other effectively blocking each other.
You guys know of a replay online?

Saying this Temple will probably lose every game the rest of the season.
On a side note I was very impressed with their tackling on defense.

Their tackling was spot on.
Being Will Fuller? He was absent almost the whole game and had about 22 yards until that last catch. He abused a great DB against USC and disappeared against Temple
Probably the least excited I've been about a ND victory in a long time.
- completely unimpressed with our inability to run the ball against Temple. I get that Temple has nice numbers this year, and they're not a terrible defense, but FFS, the talent gap between these two teams is huge. If you can't run on Temple, who can you run on?
- Kizer had a nice game with his legs. He made a few dumb passes and it bit us.
- The play calling, especially in the red zone, was awful. No idea why we didn't bother to line up in single back (pistol) and ram the ball down their throats. The few runs we attempted came from zone read and outside of the one huge run from Kizer, it was completely ineffective.
- The defense played okay. The defensive line was good, the secondary wasn't. Luke was bad, and KVR was awful outside of the one big play he made late (kudos to him).
- Temple is a decent team but this is a team that we should have beaten comfortably. We will get no favors from the committee for squeaking by on the skin of our teeth. If/when we're out of the top 10 when the rankings come out on Tuesday I won't be mad. We don't really deserve to be in the top 10 at this point.
- Glad we won, but yeah... not exactly pumped or excited. For the vast majority of this game, we simply did not play very well.
BK
David was going to get a 15 yd penalty, I had to back him up
Temple is not a legit T25 team. They have an above average defense with a piss poor offense.
I was very dismissive of Temple's defense before this game but they really impressed me. Don't get me wrong, I think ND could and should have played much better, but I haven't seen a team shut down our run game like that since Clemson. Their coaches put together a great plan for us and the Temple players were amped up. This was probably the first time when ND was playing a non-powerhouse team that I told myself I'd be happy as long as we won.
We have to figure out some way to get the inside run game going against more formidable defenses because this is going to keep happening in the rest of our games against Pitt, BC, and Stanford.
Needless to say, I fully expect Temple to shit the bed from here on out, so as to prevent ND from having a quality win.
Also, to reiterate an earlier question on the thread, does anybody know why Rhule came out on the field to yell at Luke?
You know, maybe Temple doesn't suck. We just came from behind late to beat an undefeated team on the road when we had a few breaks go against us. Enjoy it. A lot of teams don't win that game.
We could go 11-1 and some of you will still be pissed. Given the circumstances if that does occur, and it honestly looks possible, it is a miracle coaching job by Brian Kelly.
I think this is fair (as in even handed). I really thought the refs were BAAAAAD. On the second pick, the ND receiver got popped before the ball got there...which caused the int. Also I saw Crob get popped long before the ball got there in the endzone. The PI on Luke was awful. And the targeting...these are atrocious calls...I see them every week and 8 out of 10 are NOT targeting. Shumate's was NOT targeting. I'm not one to complain real hard, or real frequently about the refs. Also, I did not hear the whistle before Martin launched into the pile, maybe it blew, and I'm off here. But if you are going to allow the scrum, you can't hammer these guys for the manner in which they come into the scrum. This crew needs to be traded in for a horse we could shoot. The worst thing you can say about a crew is they impacted the outcome of a game...thank God not the outcome, but they were way more a part of this game than they should EVER be.
Also, I'd argue that the poor officiating brought Kelly to overreact to Grimes more than just what Grimes did...put it this way, if the Refs weren't seemingly leaning a little toward Temple, I don't think Kelly would have been so sensitive.
The offensive line is a big part of the red zone problems IMO.
My post game thoughts - surprisingly no hangover
* Defensive front seven played extremely well. They stopped Temple's running game, which is a key to their offense. Rochelle and Day - enough said.
Well said!
* We struggled in the red zone, but Temple all year long has been good at defending in the red zone. We need to work on establishing an effective running scheme for the RZ.
It is because their db's and linebackers don't have to run as far to cover, when disguising their coverage!
* DK played very good. He is getting more comfortable with the zone read. That long touchdown run was awesome - I didn't think he was that fast!!
Told ya!
* Our turnovers kept them in the game. They have a very good (top ten defense), and we were able to march down the field. Give a lot of credit to Temple for having a good defensive game plan and executing it.
Zactly!
* The final score might not be impressive, but our teams' play and the win is. The better Team won last night.
Even more precisely that the last point which was 'Zactly!'
* The ref's were garbage...
We won against an insanely motivated team, at night, on the road. Give credit where credit is due. That was a well coached, well prepared team.
