That rant was getting long and out of control. Coaching up the players is not the only problem ND faces. In order to stay on top and compete you have to have the players. We do not have the players and I believe that Collin is correct in saying the sell to ND is much harder these days. You have many warm weather academic schools that are in the mix such as Texas, Stanford that are huge threats to Notre Dame recruiting. Stanford recruited lights out last year and so did Texas, Notre Dame fell way short. Collin was correct in saying that we do not match up anymore against the big recruiting teams such as Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Bama etc. This is a fact go back in look at the last ten years of recruiting. You will find a correlation between the teams that recruit lights out and winning a NC. And I am not talking about one year in 2008 I am talking about year after year. Building a team with all 4 and 5 star players. This is what it takes today to win and win big. I have always said that Brian K needs to recruit in the top ten for the next 3 years for us to get back to winning 9 games. Thus far my theory has been correct. If Brian K drops the ball this year on recruiting we wont see a BCS game for another 2 to 3 years. To perform at the high level you need both coaching and talent. We saw this with Brian K cinci team. He was a good Big east team but once he was up against Florida and Oklahoma he was flat out outmatched. Notre Dame at this point is no better or worse than ACC or Big East Teams but don't fool yourslef we are nowhere near the Big 12, PAC 12, or Big Ten level. I wont even mention the SEC as we cant even think about that until we can beat Michigan, USC, and Stanford two or three years in a row.

anyone have an opinion on the following?
the ACC is at 12 teams now
2 more coming (syr, pitt)
thats 14 soon
add 2 more:
ND and OKlahoma (would love to stick it to TX)

not a bad set of teams?

might losing OK break up the Big12, therby rendering that recently announced bowl game moot? moot b/c the Big 12 would be really be a Big 9 with no OKLA?

im leery of any deal/affiliation involving TX...we should think hard about this and all future ramifications

I would disagree about being relevant. Granted we haven't been in the top ten and battling for a NC or BCS bowl like we want to be, but if ND wasn't relevant, they wouldn't have the NBC contract and every away game wouldn't be broadcast by another major network. If the Irish weren't relevant they wouldn't sell out road games like they do. ND haters don't like to admit it, but the Irish have been relevant for decades and continue to be today.

Relevant in the fact that we have fans and have a media contract. Big deal everyone is getting a media deal worth the same if not more than ND.

Relevant that everyone talks about how bad we are as a team and cant make it to a BCS Bowl. SURE that is relevant.

Relevant that we are going to make it to a BCS bowl or NC. We are completely irrelevant in that department.

WE can beat around the bush but what it comes down to is at least 9 wins. We are close but no cigar. Until this team can show us they have what it takes to close a game and win I am very skeptical about any winning record from the Irish.

I don't think the Big 12 has a TV deal. The Longhorn Network is operated by ESPN though. If ND joins the Big 12, would NBC then become the de facto Big 12 network? Agreeing to keep ND on NBC and an additional game on the NBC Network? IDK

Texas is getting paid right around 50 mill per year for their media deal. Compare that to ND 20 mill contract. Texas is building the new media format for all teams to follow.

Aaron Taylor was just on Brando and he seemed to think the ACC was the best fit for ND... he also said ND must be very careful what conference it joins, but also seemed to think ND has to join one...

he also sounded against all the super conference/playoff stuff... said college football is not and should not be semi pro college footbal and that super conferences/playoffs will make it exactly that... got to love Taylor. :)

Now offense guys, but how was TexasND's opinion any different than many, many other posters on this site who choose to be total pessimists and get away with it completely unscathed? What's the problem? ACamp, Phork (you know I've got your back Phorker), and God forbid I leave out NDOM make a living being pessimists but they're still here? Personally, I thought he was well written and his thoughts really weren't that far off of other's posts. It would seem that someone got a case of the Itchy Trigger (ban) finger for no reason other than to show how powerful they are. Lame. That's all I'll say about this but this is ridiculous. This is a message board, right?

sorry, I have never said anything even close to we are going to be a MAC team and that the program can't win nine games...

I wasn't suggesting that you guys be banned. Just wondering where the line is for one to be gonzo and others aren't... Seems to be pretty selective. Oh, and I've had the benefit of reading your stuff for 5 years now. You're not exactly a cartwheeler when it comes to this football team. lmao

Gotcha, I guess the unscathed comment read as though you wanted to see me banned (since I was named)... I would guess the line is trolling... in the other thread the guy completely insisted on calling his opinions facts, making completely crazy statements (like ND as a MAC team) and ended up being hostile/insulting to others... all at once.

I really do not feel phork or myself go there... maybe you disagree... in fact just an hour ago or so I stated ND could win ten games this year... I would say just about anyone outside of this fanbase would call that crazy opimisim... anyway.

Offense taken. The difference between phork and Acamp and any of the other guys who choose to take a pessimistic view is that they are not trolls. This guy is (well, was) a troll.

See, Phork and Acamp and others have established themselves as ND fans. Sure, they are pessimistic much of the time, but seriously, who can blame them? I actually agree with Phork a helluva lot of the time, but I just choose to have a different outlook/disposition. I disagree with a lot of the pollyannas, but they ain't getting banned either. Like you said, it's a message board.

The difference with this guy is that he came looking to start to sh!t. You're right, he made some good points, but he also made some ridiculous points that SCREAMED troll. Look at all his posts a little closer. He'd use "ND" and then in the next breath try to use 'we'...all the while talking crap about ND. It's like the old adage - WE can talk about the family, but no one outside the family can. And sorry, but this guy is clearly outside the family.

Now, before anyone starts saying that we don't allow dissenting opinions from our fans or any input from other teams' fans, well, that's not the case. There's lots of good discussion on this forum IMO, and I've been part of it as a fan. And I personally enjoy hearing from other teams' (respectful) fans, even when people are calling for them to be banned. We have a cool USC fan that posts and a couple of cool UM fans here. It's all good.

But this dude was just being an arse. When you have PMs and reported posts begging for a guy to be banned, and then you read his stuff and you agree with them, well, it wasn't about an itchy finger - it was about keeping this site free of trolls. Lord knows we don't want to have to follow every damn post this guy makes for the next few months (I tried typing this with Alyssa Rae in my arms, but she wasn't having it LOL; mommy had to take her. So just writing this is taking time away from my angel.)

I respect your opinion HCTI, but I just disagree with it. Peace big fella...

Swarbrick didn't really say anything unexpected. Of course he's still fully committed to the Big East and confident in our post-season prospects; he'll continue to say so publicly right up until we move our Olympic sports into the Big 12.

How can he be confident that we'll be included in a playoff when many ADs are strongly advocating that it be limited to conference champions? If and when such a system gets selected, the polls will be largely superfluous. ND can't finish in the top 4 if there's no official poll that puts them there. And that's to say nothing of ND's ability to continue playing a competitive schedule in a superconference landscape.

Perhaps a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway.

Does anyone else think that us scheduling Oklahoma, and Texas (in the near future) could perhaps have been a calculated move to go along with these rumblings of our possible transition to the Big XII?

I think a case could have been made for that at one time... right now it seems pretty clear that ND could jump that way if they wanted to and possibly still keep football indy... as said on CFB Live today by the Big 12... so if it was calculated, why not jump? idk

and why not keep a toe in the water?

I guess my point was, if Swarbrick had this envisioned happening, then why not prepare your team for teams they could potentially be playing every year "in conference"

(all hypothetical btw)

it's a valid point, mine is the window won't be open forever with the big 12, especially if fsu and whoever jump... well, maybe...

if this was the plan from the beginning I would think the leap would have happened by now... or at least will happen VERY shortly.
