St. Thomas or St. Croix?

I may have an opportunity to change jobs, and if it comes to fruition, then I will have my choice of either St. Thomas or St. Croix. I've never been to either, so I'm wondering if anyone has some experience(s) to share?

I've already spent two years in Hawaii, so I'm fully aware of the perils of island living, in general. I'm really looking for information more specific to these two islands.

Thanks in advance!

Are you going to have a guest room?

Hell ... a quest house, on a beach, with six bedrooms, kitchen, fully stocked bar, an Infinity Pool, a 4 star in-house chef and plenty of towels.

Anything less ain't worth it!

more on st. thomas. as far as "commercial" districts.

you will pay an arm and a leg for good or healthy things and things that kill you are cheap as hell.

bread and milk break the bank--cigarettes and rum. they give it away.

you cant go wrong with either place. they are all a 20-30 minute sail from each other.

you will less a tourist cruise boat feel on st croix. but again, more "to do" on st thomas.

why not st. johns?

And by far the most expensive, at least the last time I was there. If you are going to live there for a few years, St. Croix is the best choice as the other islands are an easy trip.

I triple that sentiment. Went there twice on family vacations and then on my honeymoon. If you can wrangle that out of your employer, you're the man.

His job is to make other people feel crappy and worthless about their current state of existence. Or he is The Most Interesting Man in the World. "I don't always relocate for my job, but when I do, I prefer gorgeous Caribbean islands."

The customer does not have a facility on St. Johns. More on the customer, later, once the contract is finalized.

copy that. good for you bud. not sure where you are in your life, but if this is something where nothing in the states is holding you back, or willing to go too--dont hesitate.

really what you have to realize in making your decision is, what do you want to do when your not working? youll have the boating, sailing, wave runnners, bars, bars, bars, bars, and seafood. but st. thomas will offer more of a town/tourist vibe.

most caribbean countries/islands are the same--a small handful that like very well in really nice houses, and a majority that live in squaller. by american standards. big resorts and american tourist dollars dominate the scene.

FINALLY!! My sweet spot.. Welp.. I was born and raised on St. Thomas.. Actually swam against Tim D in high school.. But, being from "Da Roc'" I prefer St. Thomas.. Like one poster said, more to do.. But St. Croix is very nice also.. St. John has some of the warmest water found anywhere.. But you can't go bad with either one.. As far as being expensive.. It can be.. Especially if you're white.. They (vendors) know that most likely.. You're a tourist.. Hence, they put the screws to you..

When you get there.. You have to eat a couple of things that'll make you fall in love with food.. Some Conk and Rice.. Go to Lakes Chicken, by Coki Point beach.. And order a box of Thigh and Fries (chicken).. Some Jonny Cakes with cheese.. Dumb Bread with cheese.. Salt Fish and Shell Fish.. Curry Chicken and Rice.. Specials (It's the island version of Shaved Ice).. They are really good.. Pattay's.. They come in Chicken, Beef, Conk and Salt Fish.. All are very good..

You'll have a blast.. If you need anything let me know..

Thanks for all of the input, everyone. For those who asked; I am a Field Service Technician, working on X-ray equipment used in security applications. A company that I work part time for, doing work overseas, is part of a team that recently was awarded a contract to provide maintenance to TSA, for their screening equipment at their passenger checkpoints. I'm leaning toward St. Croix, because it appears that housing is a bit more affordable. I'm 45, and my going out and partying days are pretty much behind me. I prefer to party at home with friends, these days. So the slower nightlife is not a big concern to me. I'm actually hoping to work a deal where I would cover both airports (St Thomas and St Croix) for a much higher salary. From what I have been able to gather, both islands have a significantly higher cost of living than Columbus, OH.

When I said that I have already lived in Hawaii; that was 20 years ago, when I was stationed at Naval Air Station Barbers Point for 2 years.

If he said he was going to Belize you might be on to something.

I will be heading back down to BZ in about 10 days. Is that where Jesse retired or something? If so I'll look him up after I take care of business... LOL. But seriously, heading down the week after next for some work and a few days on the islands.

I really don't know how you conceive of leaving Brutusland for two virgins.

An update:

Well, as is not unusual in life; the once promising opportunity has crashed back to earth and has become just your normal everyday drudgery. I've been offered a position with a subcontractor on the new TSA ILS contract. This contract provide Integrated Logistics Support to TSA, for maintenance and repair of the screening equipment used at the passenger checkpoints. Initially, the sub that offered me a position was told that they would have the airports on both St. Thomas, and St. Croix(amongst others). However, now that the final subcontracting plan is out, we don't have either. What we are going to have is one technician in each of the following areas: Casper, WY; Medford, OR; Little Rock, AR; McAllen, TX; Albany, NY; and possibly somewhere in Western Kansas. I am leaning toward Albany or Little Rock, but we still have to wait to see what is available. The subcontractors have to offer the incumbents first, and can only hire new if the incumbent does not want to hire on.

This is kind of like expecting to go 12-0, and ending up 8-4.

Little Rock's not too bad now-- it's actually a pretty cool city. Plus, trinity and his kilt will be nearby. So there's that.
