I'm not enough of a gamer to do multiple play-throughs. The last game I played prior to Skyrim was Oblivion and the one before that was probably GTA4 or FIFA in college.

I wouldn't worry about good or bad then. Karma isn't a subjective/quantitative thing in the world of Tamriel, unlike the Fallout franchise. Aside from a roleplaying restriction, theres no reason to pass over any Skyrim quests...especially if you're only planning a one time play through.

Is there no Fame / Infamy like in Oblivion? I played Oblivion as the Divine Crusader and I HAD to keep infamy at zero or I had to take a pilgrimage to the wayshrines of the divines.

Na, it was removed. It's probably a good thing too. I thought it was kind of cool when my infamy got high in Oblivion...but there was a problem. I contracted the early stages of vampirism, and there was nary a Potion of Cleanse Disease on any vendors. That grew to be a big problem as I searched various towns and talked to vendors as I could not talk to a shrine of the Divines to get the disease purged.

You do get bounties in specific holds if you're caught doing illegal activities. For instance, if you're caught pickpocketing in Whiterun you may get a small bounty, but Riften won't know you're a criminal. If you kill a man and you're witnessed in Riften, but you happen to get away, Whiterun probably won't know about it. The nice thing about the Thieves guild is they can reduce any bounties you have if you give them gold, they'll clear your history. I never got many bounties as a Thief though, typically if you stick to the shadows you can complete your goals. Dark Brotherhood is another matter. Theres one or two quests where you'll probably be unable to avoid a bounty of some kind unless your Stealth is very good.

I might join the thieves' guild just to have a place to sell my stolen items. My good / noble character wouldn't hesitate to steal from "bad guys," but the stolen tag doesn't differentiate based on who the "victim" of your theft was.

There ya go. Like I said, Skyrim's version of Robbin Hood.

I had a pretty low infamy in Oblivion also...

Acamp I tried to get into bows... I spent a lot of money on them, tried to fight with them, but whenever I'm pinched I drop the bow and get out my axe for a lethal 2 handed blow. I'm a heavy armor, close quarters combat kind of guy and I'm proud of it!

Wait until you start searching caves and stuff... You'll need a good bow. Also, i don't 'fight' with my bow... if I'm getting charged by numerous enemies I bring out my Chillebrand (A light sword with frost damage) and fight. The thing about the bow is once you get good with it you rarely have to fight, you just sneak up on peps and snipe them.

Funny thing is, it's in a cave that it dawned on me that I'm not suited for a bow, because of the small area to fight. Whenever I'm close to death or see a strong enemy/enemies, it's my natural reaction to get out the axe. I'll keep it around and use it in the open and see if I can convert, but I think it's hand to hand combat for me.

Before I started consulting, I lost 130 hrs of my life to that game. It was my second job, I'd leave work by 3:30 and go home and play until 1 or 2 in the morning with very few breaks.

As soon as they release the next in the series, I'll buy a new computer just to play it on maxed out graphics. I wish more games like this were created. Just one per year would be enough.

If that's how you roll... I would suggest sneaking around corners with your bow already drawn, and sniping... once your sneak is high enough multiple enemies won't be able to find you until the third or fourth shot, at which point you've already killed a few of them (usually all of them)... and if they do see you you've killed at least one and THEN you whip out your sword/axe/whatnot...

My experience is that if you go hack and slash through a giant cave of fortress you'd better have very high health pionts or a ton of potions... you'll lose a lot of health along the way.

I've never liked any of the double handed weapons myself (long swords and axes)... they always seemed to swing far too slow and take far too much carry weight for my tastes...

I hear ya, but there's no wrong way to eat a reeces. I started out married to my axe, and so I'll put up with its pitfalls because it's the only weapon I feel confident against how difficult the enemies now are. With a bow, they're hitting me about twice as much as I'm hitting them, loll.

Archery can be effective as your only combat skill, even against melee enemies that are in your face, but you need the Power Shot, Ranger and Quick Draw perks (which require 50, 60 and 70 skill, respectively) in order to do it. Fortunately, Faendal and Aela can take you to 75 Archery very quickly, but if it's just not your style, you're probably better off sticking to melee combat. In fact, based off your previous posts, I think you should be using a 1h Axe + Shield or a 2h Axe exclusively.

Same here. I only use two-handed weapons to finish off a dragon or something like that.

My general fighting strategy is to snipe enemies with a bow until they get close enough to do damage to me. Then I pull out my one handed weapon in my right hand and either a destruction or restoration spell in my left. I also summon atronachs or my dremora (using the Sanguine Rose) to draw attention away from me.

That tells me your sneak must improve... at least to take on my straegey... you shouldn't be getting hit at all with your bow.

Let me know how you do when you start facing dragons... It was a long ways back, but that is what made me go all out with my bow.... the dragons just rocked me early in the game when I was a sword and shield guy trying to hack and slash the thing. I finally tried bow/arrow against one from a safe distance (behind rocks/trees) and the thing couldn't really touch me... been a bow guy ever since.

I always build a sneaky Archer first in TES games, and I was pleasantly surprised by how useful the Throw Voice shout is for this play-style in Skyrim. After a couple shots, enemies start honing in on your location, so you just use Throw Voice to send away from you and back into your sights. You learn all three words from a single easily-accessible Word Wall, and the cooldown is totally negligible.

Two-Handers are awesome. With 100 Block, 1/5 in Shield Wall, and a single modest Fortify Block enchant, they block as much as any shield can, while putting out a lot more damage than 1h + Shield. It's also really easy to stagger lock an enemy by chaining power attacks, and the Sweep perk offers the only AoE melee attack in the game.

This is me exactly... though I never use the Dremora one, just the flame astro. ... Last night while playing it hit me how high my sneak and archery have gotten... enemies basically can walk right into me now... lol

I am definately a 'loot everything' guy too... I'm all about picking up as much stuff as possible so I can go sell it all once I get back to friendly turf....

with that in mind it is always a goal to carry the most effective weapons and armor with the lowest carry weight. Heavy Armor and two handed weapons pretty much get disqualified right there.

I spent about 35 minutes walking to Whiterun to sell some stuff yesterday, lol.

I haven't bought a house yet. I've bought rooms for a night, but no house. Doubt I could afford it now anyways, but does it make much difference where you buy?

I bought the Hearthfire DLC and built my own house. It takes awhile to get it fully equipped but it's a good "I feel like playing Skyrim but not bothering much with quests" task. It's also a quick way to build Smithing, as it requires a whole bunch of building materials. Iron ingots become your best friend.

Some houses are def better than others... I really liked Riften (town wise) but the house there is terrible, like a one room shack. The best house is in... I forget where now, The large Castle city... but it's like three stories and is really nice.

I liked the house in Whiterun, it's the first one most tend to get and it will do... You have to work for the Jarl a bit before they even let you buy a house... and to fully furnish them can get quite pricey...

I loved Hearthfire, just wished you could do more in terms of actual layout... and mwfie, Yosilda, always likes the houses... (She's such a grade A piece of Skyrim arse....)

I love that in an era of multiplayer, online games taylored for the ADHD, they made a huge role player game... But I can't help but wonder how fun it would be to take down dragons together (well you take down dragons, and I hide behind a rock).

I live in Markath because that house is awesome. So I sell as much as I can to my wifey Ysolda there and do my enchanting/alchemy there. But I do my smithing and remaining bartering in Whiterun.

Same general playing style, same homestead, same wife...
