Who would be on the list to replace him at DC? I vote sending a blank check to whoever was behind the success Boston College had on defense this year.

I like Don Brown, but I honestly don't think his hire would go over well. No big time experience, not a good recruiter, older fella.

“Don is real. He is a tough, New England guy and he has come up the hard way like we all have – the small college route through New England,” said BC head coach Steve Addazio. “You have to love him because that’s who he is. He loves defense; attack-blitzing defense. He can really build a great attitude, a toughness, and he’s done that to our defense.”

Was this the guy losing his shit on the sideline during the Fenway game. I heard some.coach cussing like a sailor and it got caught on tv. Lol.

Haha... Yes... that was definitely him.

He is between your drunk uncle Eddie and that gym teacher that always has his balls showing out of his umbro shorts.

Angry... deliberate....

In fairness neither Van Gorder or Diaco have exactly killed it for us on the trail.

I thought diaco was a great recruiter, no? Definitely worked hard at it, he was up at 4 in the morning to get ishaq.

Bob Diaco All Time Recruits

side story, i saw him in orlando at the team hotel during champ sports bowl against fsu, dude was sharp, 3 piece suit on, dressed to the nines, i assume he had just come back from a recruiting trip.

also shared an elevator with troy niklas, largest human being I've ever stood next to.

That was his one coup. Otherwise, meh. And he had these crazy physical requirements for front seven players he'd consider. We'd chase these all measurement/camp freaks and come up empty. After he left BVG signed up like four d linemen in a few weeks.

As for why BVG would go to Miami, maybe he'd feel a little push from behind? We'll see.

I know a lot of us on here have been very disappointed with BVG's defense. If he were to leave, would we potentially lose any of our top recruits and if so, who would be the potential ones?

Well not a recruit, but we'd probably miss Montgomery.

I really hope the "BVG is a gansta" thread doesn't turn into the post Ishaq recruitment fawning over Diaco, but I think it is. I think his hire will be reflected upon positively in hindsight.

His hire meaning bvg? I think he'll get it right.

In two years with BVG the defense has underperformed and has been on occasion an outright liability. There are a lot of outside circumstances such as injuries that were out of his control, but at some point the top defensive coach on the team has to produce, and so far it hasn't happened. Teams get it done with way lower talent levels, at some point they'll bring someone in who will, whether it's BVG or not.

I'm sure they are thrilled to know they get to continue to decide which games they are going to play and when they are going to practice.

Pay off me thinks that this job list a lot of interest as a result of that circus

yup no coach looking in at that situation is gonna want any part of that. coaches want to win and they hate distractions.

I find it odd that so many articles refer to him as "former LSU assistant" when his most recent assistant coaching job and highest assistant coaching position (LSU-RB Coach, ND-Off Coord) were both at Notre Dame. Plus, he played at Notre Dame.

I believe he was also HC at Miami of Ohio before taking the Pitt job.

The defense actually improved this season from last year, and nearly across the board, I believe. Probably not the redzone numbers, but I think statistically the defense was better in most places this year.

I think another year will provide the answer on BVG. I think losing him would suck, because we're going to lose 2/3/4 of our best defenders, and continuity in the same system with younger guys stepping up might help offset those losses. Also, continuity in general should help this defense. Mental errors should decrease and redzone defense should improve a bit. They don't need to be world-beaters, they just need to be generally capable. Losing BVG to another job (or getting rid of him) would stunt the growth of the defense, and it would be much more difficult to offset the personnel losses when you are entering a year where it is crucial that you improve.

So if BVG does get poached, does BK make another call to Brady Hoke?

Teams with lower talent levels than ours are usually not playing the kind of schedule we play.

But I feel ya. I can see the frustration, but I've also seen a lot of positives out of our defense, I think it will be BVG, I see no benefit in firing a guy after 2 years, where one year we were decimated with injury and the second year played good enough to be 12-0 (2 plays away)

ECU firing is dumb because he almost beat florida plus he went to bowl games the last 3 years plus losing starting QB prior to season, what the hell do they mean update program?

East Carolina fires coach Ruffin McNeill after six seasons - CBSSports.com

By Robby Kalland | Staff Writer
December 4, 2015 11:27 am ET

East Carolina made a surprise decision on Friday and fired coach Ruffin McNeill after six seasons with the Pirates. East Carolina posted its second-worst record under McNeill in 2015 with a 5-7 mark.

McNeill had a 42-34 (.553) record in his six years at ECU, including a bowl victory in 2013.

"After deliberate evaluation, the decision has been made to move our football program in a different direction with new leadership." athletic director Jeff Compher said in a release. "We are appreciative of the hard work, dedication and contributions Coach McNeill and his staff have made to both East Carolina University and our community.

"Our expectations are to compete for championships," Compher added. "Our goal will be to move expediently in the search process, and based on the outstanding support of our Pirate fan base and enhanced visibility in the American Athletic Conference, I am confident our candidate pool will be deep."

East Carolina gave McNeill a three-year extension in 2013 to be the coach through 2018, but after an 8-8 record in the first two seasons in the American Athletic Conference, the school decided to go in a different direction.

I though McNeill was considered a coach with a future elsewhere ... but on his schedule not their's.
