Book is faster than y'all think. He's not going to run through a tackler for 1-2 more yards like Wimbush, but he's almost as effective as a RPO/scrambler if you ask me.

Agree that Book is faster than most people think.
Agree that Book will probably be just as effective on RPO
Disagree that he will be almost as effective as a scrambler.

Hopefully our OL can continue to improve their pass protection.

Yeah, I'll take that back. I was talking in terms of dropping back and no one's open, so take off for ~8 yards. I think Book can do that as well as Wimbush.

But Book will not evade/break tackles when he's in the pocket, and that's part of scrambling.

Book is about 200x better than Brandon at making the read on options and RPO's

I don't know if Book playing as the primary QB makes the ceiling on the offense significantly higher, but I think there's an argument to be made that it would raise the floor, based on what we've seen to this point.

Would you say that, dare I say it, he's quicker than fast!?

If true, I'm pretty excite about it. It'd be interesting to see what the passing game looks like with a true thrower in the pocket. Hopefully I won't have to hold my breath every time he throws.

Here is actually a pretty good writeup from Chief.

Breaking news out of South Bend. Notre Dame is going with Ian Book this week at Wake Forest. It wouldn’t be a Brian Kelly season without a little drama at the quarterback position. Time is a flat circle and Ian Book is QB1.

Wimbush is arguably Notre Dame’s best runner and has the best arm strength on the team, but the offense has been in quick sand all year because of his inability to get the short and intermediate passing game going do to a lack of accuracy. Wimbush really isn’t even that good at the read-option plays either.

It’s clear that ND would love to run more RPOs and have tried to force it into the playbook, but Wimbush consistently makes the wrong read or when he makes the correct read to throw the ball out the perimeter the pass in inaccurate and the play goes nowhere. Hence Chris Finke had 5 catches for a grand total of 6 yards vs Vanderbilt last week.

The days of Wimbush improvising and using his legs to pick up a 3and18 like he did against Michigan are gone, but the hope is that now Notre Dame will have a competent passing game so you don’t end up in as many 3-and-forevers. Book is a better runner than people give him credit for, which of course is code for “He’s a white guy”. He’ll pull the ball down when appropriate and the Irish will stay ahead of the sticks as a result.

Notre Dame is 3-0, but the offense has been held to 24 points or less in all three games. The coaching staff gave Wimbush a quarter of the season to get it going and it just never really came together. Now they turn to Ian Book against Wake Forest where he’ll hopefully lead the Irish to 4-0 before the meat of their schedule hits…Stanford and then in Blacksburg vs Virginia Tech. Full speed ahead for the uNDefeated Irish. All Gas, No Brakes, Ian Book. Lets go

I can't wait to watch Claypool or Boykin just running away from everyone on the first RPO that hits like it's supposed to.

Then Wimbush comes in on a 2nd-and-1 after halftime, breaks off a 70-yard score, and we're all thrilled with the new system.

I've been asking for a while now to use Wimbush as a running back.

Its not Wimbush, but I'm fairly surprised they haven't used an end around pass for Avery Davis yet.

Your posts are just one big Wimbush apology tour. Stop making excuses and produce. If your teammates are "giving up" on their routes is not of that a reflection on you? ESB had the same negatives on him last year - yet somehow he is a pro. Confidence runs both ways - my counterpoint being the WR have no confidence in BW delivering them the ball where it needs to be and if he does they more often than not seem surprised by it.

Really b/c I don’t remember saying BW runs RPO better than Book...because he does not. Frankly, if they’re not going to run Wimbush more they may as well run with Book as QB1. Just be careful what you wish for b/c with the small sample size, Book has thrown 4 picks in far fewer attempts. Facts dont care about your feelings.
