Well I guess I'm just poor.

I think you're crazy if you wouldn't rather sit at home with the drink of your choice than pay that.

I don't think watching at home compares to being at the stadium, but that's just me.

More to your point about being poor. You and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes age and being a fan. At my stage, life is probably a little easier for us "older" fans. We probably have a little more expendable income, so $50 for a ticket seems okay, where $50 seems high to the younger crowd. Especially when you can get into a Monroe Central game for $5. lol

Agree, ND is on the edge of pricing families out of the gameday experience. Everything is expensive besides the tix. I tailgated, where the price is right. After entering the stadium, the only thing I purchased was a water at halftime...lukewarm and just under $5.

We were going to drive the RV to the game, until I found out it costs $150 to park it and you couldn't come until game day.

ND game days are cheaper than anything we have on the west coast, to see a hockey game here it is about $150 for upper deck seating and $20 light beers

I don't even have to pay, boss. haha

But heck, I can get into Ball State games for next to nothing. I get that BSU isn't ND, but when ND is playing someone of that level, I'd like the tickets to be cheap.

Now that they're not doing paper tickets how do the scalpers distribute the goods? Do you just text the ticket info via smart phone?

I think the seller has to log into their und account and click transfer tickets and enter the buyers email address.

That makes sense.

I wonder how many people are going to be flooding the ticket office with new accounts on Saturdays

I was wrong, the seller still logs in their und account but they enter the phone number of the person they want to transfer their tickets to. The buyer will then receive a text message from which they can download the tickets to their phone.

I'm a bit confused, are you inferring that the ND fan base is shrinking? I don't think that's the case...and sorry if I'm misinterpreting. The portion of the fan base that generally attend games, might be on the older, "blue-blood" side. But if you look at the TV ratings, ND fandom isn't going anywhere. I'm not an alum, but my grandparents grew up in South Bend and relocated to MI, and I'm a third, hell maybe even fourth generation of ND fans in the family. And I don't anticipate that changing.

I think the difference is what Beau kind of alluded to: Are millennials or Gen Z as likely to make a trip and spend more money with the enhancements TV has made? At-home entertainment is wildly advanced compared to what the "blue-bloods" experienced. So as season ticket holders go away, I think there's less and less taking their spots, and fans like me pick my battles and attend 2-3 times a year as opposed to going for all 6 or 7. I have colleagues who are scUM alum who gave up their season tickets for the same reason; they'd rather just watch from home and go to a game or two every year.

You schedule programs from the group of 5 (Cincy is a different story) be prepared to have empty seats charging $50 or so a pop, plus travel and lodging expenses.

I don’t think TV ratings is a good measuring stick for the growth/shrinkage of the fan base. It’s too mixed with casual fans looking for a brand name to watch or actively rooting against ND. I turned on the Michigan game on Saturday for no reason whatsoever. I just like football, but doesn’t mean I’m a fan of either.

I do think Beau had a great point that I never considered with the streaming and in-home experience. But to play devil’s advocate, why isn’t ND putting the same effort and energy into the gameday experience? Enhanced gameday experiences continue that generational family of fans, it turns your friends/coworkers you brought to the game that aren’t ND fans into ND fans (or at least wanting to come back). Those friends/coworkers that aren’t ND fans damn sure are not paying $4 to watch ND on Peacock. That’s my point, games have to be accessible to a point to continue to grow eyeballs on the program, especially for the future players.

Gameday experience drives engagement. Engagement gets you more attention from your diehards and turns casual observers into fans. All of that = more $ which is what they’re aiming for.

I think Irishlax had a great post awhile ago about the changing dynamic in the student body and the shift away from the traditional ND student that loved the university. If he sees this I would love for him to repost it because I think that comes into play too.

additional edit - I don’t think this is just an ND problem, it’s across college football. But I do think the challenges are greater for ND because the fan base is not regionally focused like state schools.

IMO the game day experience on campus is great and they do a great job of engaging the crowd with the Jumbotron. Once we get a handle on COVID, I think you'll see the attendance jump back up.

Purdue has some talent and experience, no doubt, but their defense hasn't really got the job done. They've given up and average of 30 points per game over the last two years and have a record 6-12 in those games. Wisconsin ran for 402 yds vs them in 2019. Went 1-1 over the two years vs the likes of Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern and Minnesota.

We shouldn't have a problem getting to 35 points or so vs these guys. If we don't, or give up more than 35, we're in deep shit this year.

Can you elaborate?

Watched it, nothing out of the ordinary although Hyde is a lot more likeable than the other ex coach on the beat. He was quite optimistic that both our OL and D will improve markedly. Very bullish on Buchner.

I haven't been to many Purdue games in South Bend, but I'm almost certain there was a game that didn't bring it. You don't forget a big fucking drum, especially in your own stadium. This feels like a bunch of poppycock to add drama to the game...but I find it funny that Purdue is begging to bring the drum and ND isn't listening. Appropriate given the current state of the rivalry.

The always Irish podcast guy reckons they didn’t bring it in 2012. Love his rants.
