Harbaugh is not a good coach. How hairbrained is it to go for 4th and medium at midfield at this point in the game? You have your inexperienced backup QB in the game, your defense has held the entire second half, if ND kicks a FG the game is over. I mean I’m ALL about the other team making it easier for the Irish but that was one of the crazier decisions I’ve seen regarding game/clock management.

I’m actually a big fan of going for it, generally. Coaches are too conservative and as a matter of math teams would be well served to go for it more often. But that was a textbook situation of when NOT to go for it. Punting exists specifically for that situation. Low probability of a conversion and high degree of risk if you fail.

Chase had to slow to get around Finke and his defender.

Yeah, agreed. I love aggression but you have to be smart about. The line between aggressive (and borderline reckless) and stupid/desperate is very fine.
