Motta was not slow...

He had good reaction time at times, but not always. Relative speed was low though.

Yeah, he was slow. Ran a terrible 40 that really hurt his draft grade at the combine. Relative to NFL safeties he was definitely one of the slowest.

He ran a 4.83, which isnt horrific, but one of the worst safety times.

On an odd note, he had the second longest broad jump out of safeties.

That being said, there were quite a few DNP's.

I dogged Zeke for 3 years about his speed and poor angles. His senior year, he played really well given his poor speed. He did much better at taking angles at the ball carrier/receiver.

That helped, but he was still 5th on the depth chart going into yesterday, so he moved up 2 spots on his own.

While Denard wasn't a great passer, it's not like we could just let receivers run open down the field. We still had to account for every play as if he could pass.

Yes, Garner will complete more of those passes, but it's not like we all of a sudden have to commit more players to receivers.

I'm not as afraid of Michigan's offense as I was in year's past. But their defense worries me.

Not sure it would have really mattered. Drake Johnson was the 2nd RB in the CMU game, Derrick Green was the 3rd. Johnson had I think 3 carries, Green had I think 11. Green was still carrying the ball before Johnson ever got hurt. Johnson didn't get hurt running the ball, he got hurt on special teams.

Green was listed as 5th on the depth chart going into that game, and he was the 3rd back in.

Watching the CMU game again, I think Derrick Green was the most talented RB on the team. He's probably too big at 240, and I think if he didn't get injured early in camp and was down to 230 that he'd have been the starter to open up the season.

It was good seeing Toussaint healthy, but he just seems to lack the ability to run with any power or break tackles. He's too easy to bring down and he runs east/west too much sometimes.

Motta played at what, 6-2/215? I always thought he'd have been perfect for the WILL LB position in a 4-3 at say 230-235 pounds. That 4.83 speed isn't as big of a concern at LB as it is safety. 4.83 is actually a really good time for a LB.

That's an understatement. Gardner literally bailed on the pass every single attempt on Saturday if his #1 option was covered.

Manti's 4.78 was considered slow at 241 lbs for a MLB. Just sayin.

I'm not sure if he meant by NFL standards, or college football standards. I would tend to think that out of all 120 or so football teams in the NCAA 4.85 would be considered "good" for an inside linebacker.

Either way, Motta was an upper echelon college safety, hence why he was drafted and subsequently made a roster. Would he have made a better linebacker? Who knows.
