Dear Coach Kelly,
The stadium will be electric tonight, it will be crazy and loud and both teams will have to settle down and find their focus. Given this certainty, can we kindly let the D-boyz take the field first and ride that wave of emotion and force Gardner and his offense to settle down, hear the snap count, execute a play when the whole stadium is rocking. Please...just once.
There are other advantages you know:
1. If they can't overcome all of these built in home field advantages, then we will probably have good field position.
2. We will get the ball first to start the second half.
3. Even should they score they will not carry the momentum because everyone will be very excited to see EG and the offense take the field.
I know I say this every game coach, and I know you are an offensive minded guy but this is in my opinion a significant advantage we are conceding. I can promise you if they win the toss they will defer. So I am going to ask once again, just say "we defer", practice it in the mirror, once you try it, you might like it.
Sincerely,
Redbar.
P.S. Nothing says buzzkill like the offense taking the ball to start the game and giving up a quick turnover because someone isn't settled down and giving them any easy score. Then you are playing catch up and you don't get the ball to start the 3rd quarter. See Michigan 2012, Oklahoma 2013.
