Those rankings are opponent adjusted, so their defensive rating has already been discounted for the poor quality of competition faced thus far.

How does that work exactly? Do they simply compare the first two games to adjust? For example, alcorn state played Alabama state and tech and tulane has played tech and Duke. Does the metric basically compare techs defensive performance against those other two schools performance versus the same team?

The rankings are heavily influenced by preseason ratings this early in the season; but you're basically correct. As the season progresses and more teams become connected, the opponent adjustments become more accurate.

So I'm thinking Martini has to start over JO in this game. Thoughts?

How did Jaylon do last year against Navy? The option is a different animal, but the way he's playing this year it seems like running to his side is suicide. If he can slow one side of the field every time, we should be in good shape.

We gotta get 1 TFL per series. You do that against the option and you're going to have success. I feel like Jaylon is going to make it tough on them this year.

It's not just going to be on Jaylon if they run to his side. If he keeps his assignment then it is going to be up to the others on that side to clean up. I would suspect that Tech tries to run opposite Jaylon as much as they can.

Jaylon goes beyond his assignment though, and holds his own lane while disrupting ones near him too. That's why I think it's going to be tough for them to go at him if he showed signs of figuring it out vs. Navy last year (I don't remember). The others will have to play their assignment too obviously, but I would be afraid to run at Jaylon at all because he can be in virtually two places at once because of his athleticism.

Lots of garbage angles taken there.

I forgot that ND was up by 21 and blew the lead. The defense completely fell apart. Bad pass coverage, bad angles of pursuit...just kind of bad fundementals all around. Saw a lot of that with the DB's against Va Tech in the passing game and with Schmidt in the run game.

Don't necessarily disagree, but against Ga Tech if one goes beyond their assignment on defense bad things happen.

I'm surprised there is not more of a push to start Martini over Onwualu in this game.

I can't see how the bookies have ND as a 3 point favorite in this one (last I heard)

incredible to think with our injuries and recent experience defending the triple against navy that we'd be favored against as far as I know a very good GT team.

I hate to be the pessimist (as always), but I see a long day in South Bend on Saturday for the Irish.

Would love to be proven wrong!!

Plus I REALLY wish we'd get Navy off the schedule. tired of being banged up after playing them now couple that with playing a bigger and more athletic triple option team is just begging for more devastating injuries.

I'm not saying Jaylon should go beyond his assignment. I'm saying he can play his and when the play happens, almost play his as well as a 'near by' assignment because he covers so fast. I just think it's a bad idea for GT to go at his side because he's going to cause TFL's, which ruins GT's offense. They have to get a couple of yards at least per play.
