Even with injury, I really don't think we don't need him Saturday. We have GAIII, Theo, Mahone, etc. Not to mention, we have a mobile QB. For as tough as our schedule is, it actually sets up nicely for Cierre to miss the first two games.

Mark it... Cierre will have a sick game come MSU.

Why would we want the less experienced guy to play? I start coming around to your line of thinking and then you go 180.

Let me explain. Cierre is obviously not hurt, he is sitting at home watching his teammates play. I believe we will convincingly win both of these games. Cierre will want to make an impact when he comes in. He will be practicing the entire time and will want to solidify himself as the premier player on the team that he believes himself to be.

Players typically have pretty good games in returns historically as well.

EDIT - Wait... I misunderstood you.

I dont think we need Cierre to win and it will be good to get two guys that are important to our team touches in good situations. This will come in handy later in year when we need one of these guys to step up. I obviously don't want Cierre to sit in games like OU, USC, scUM, etc.

EDIT 2 - I reread what you quoted. I am deep into a fifth of Canadian Club. I have no idea where I am going with this...

Cierre also wants to get into draft position, which is just more motivation since hell have less time to impress

I'm not in this boat with ya, homie.

GAIII is VERY capable and Riddick has more experience than even Cierre. These guys aren't freshman that are out of their element. These guys are gamers.

Everett is a completely different QB than Demetruis and will be asked to run a real offense instead of that pathetic excuse for a dickrod offense Chuck asked Demetrius to run. That was embarrassing.

We don't need Cierre to beat either Navy or Purdue. This will give GAIII and Theo valuable reps that will pay dividends somewhere down the line this season.

Good arguments but what I think you are missing is that this O-line is great. Anyone should be able to run behind them.

Nobody ever talks about this O-line...which I understand...they never get talked about. The offense starts and ends with the O-line. By numbers, that is half of your offense. If your O-line is bad...I'm sorry but your offense is going to suck. On the other side, if your O-line is good you will most likely score points.

I'd rather have Wood than not, but I saw enough out of Theo at the end of last year and the Blue/Gold game to think he can get tough yards.

He ran much harder after Gray got hurt.

I'd much rather have Wood, too, Tadman. But since we are talking football, this game is custom tailored for GAIII to come in off the bench and take it to the hhhoooooouuuuuussssssseeeeeee!!!!

You are 100% right. We have one of the best offensive lines in the country, Riddick and Atkinson should have a field day running the ball

Updates from Dublin: Everett is hungry, Toma brought back the blonde hair and Gunner is way too excited on top of the bus.

I know I’ll get trashed for this, but I’ve been thinking it for several days so I’ll write it anyway.

In thinking about this year my mood has gone from being very confident to something closer to hopeful. When I was confident it was because the two-deep at most positions looked extremely good, and I could envision guys going into and out of the game with little dropoff. As the season starts I’m still hopeful, but not nearly as confident. I see a team that is inexperienced at several positions and dangerously thin in a lot of places.

I really believe the key to the season is getting through these first two games unscathed - meaning no losses and no key injuries at OL, LB or the secondary. If that happens they'll head into the 2 game stretch with the mich teams with a whole lot of momentum. If they drop one of these first two they'll be just trying to avoid a disastrous season the rest of the way out.

When I look at the two-deep before the rash of injuries and suspensions I see talent, depth, experience and huge potential all over the field. That's a recipe for a great season. I look at it now and there is still a lot of talent and a good deal of potential, but there is so much inexperience and so many thin positions it is terrifying.

Just had to get it off my chest, I know I'll get ripped and I'll take the abuse silently. If they're 2-0 in two weeks and healthy, I'll be seriously confident about the rest of the season. If they're 1-1 or if somebody goes down, it could get dicey.

But in case anyone wants to understand my thinking consider the following breakdown:

DEFENSE:
DL: excellent and deep.
LB: Shembo/Williams: very good or excellent. Teo: excellent. Fox/Calabrese would be solid with experience; but Fox/Grace seems shaky. Spond/Councell would be solid with potential for improvement from new blood – Councell/Okwara: there is high upside but who knows.
Safety: Slaughter/Motta should be excellent but there is no experienced depth.
CB: hopefully adequate, potential disaster. I like Jackson b/c I know he can tackle—I’m hopeful that Russell’s ascendancy means he will be a good one, but anyone who says this is not a horrible situation to be in is lying.

OFFENSE:
Golson/Hendrix: potentially very good but inexperienced.
Wood/Riddick/Atkinson would be excellent. Riddick/Atkinson is still potentially good, maybe very good if Atkinson arrives.
Goodman/Jones/Eifert/Toma: beyond Eifert this group doesn’t excite me, but if someone steps up on the outside or Neal becomes a serious threat in the slot then this group could become a strength.
OL: went from excellent and deep to very good but very thin.

I think you have some realistic thoughts but some I disagree with too.

Bold pt. #1- I am super excited to let the Werewolf out. Inexperienced? Yes, but chomping at the bit.

Bold pt. #2- The safety position has some experience in the depth, not a lot, but more than none. Also, there is ample depth with all guys I would like to see play, experienced or not.

Bold pt. #3- The group of players behind Eifert isn't real flashy (until you get to those with no experience= Neal, Brown, Ferg, Daniels) but we don't necessarily need them to "excite", our RB's and QB will do plenty of exciting things. I just want our receivers to be reliable. By that I mean, catch the balls you are supposed to catch and block the guy you are suppoesd to block. If they make a guy miss then awesome, but I don't think that is what is going to be asked of this group.

No reason to take abuse. Your breakdown is pretty much what most of the reasonable posters on here have been harping on all summer.

The only thing I would add is that at this point, there isn't much we can do except watch. We know that our situation will change throughout the season, but today we should all just sit back and anticipate an Irish victory.

GOOOOO IRISH!!!

Right there with ya. Yesterday felt like a Friday with CFB starting. Got a blister on my thumb from hitting "Previous" so much on my remote as I flipped through games.

Can't wait to see this team on the field. I was really worried about this game, sorry folks but adaptive expectations get the better of me, until I looked at that last few years of ND vs. Navy games. 2009 was a fluke. Sorry but a Tenuta run D and a couple turnovers inside the 5 basically gave the game away. 2010 was a steep learning curve against 2 of the best players ever in that offense. Diaco and Co. obviously learned from their 2010 experience and beat two good option teams last year. Further we now have a QB that can unleash the full BK offense. GO IRISH!!!
