Senator proposes resolution urging Auburn to claim 9 national titles

"The Auburn football team also proved itself to be the best team in the nation in 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004," the resolution states. "All nine of these special seasons are held close in the hearts of Auburn coaches, players, and fans and should be embraced by the university as championship seasons."

"You've got to win them on the field," Sen. Trip Pittman, R-Montrose told Whatley.

The idea of retroactively claiming championships is not new.

Athletic Director Jay Jacobs announced in May that the school had decided to claim only the 1957 and 2010 championships.

Alabama claims 15 national championships.

Quick trivia:

Cheating? Weren't they on probation when they "won" the 1957 AP title. I don't think they even got to play in a bowl game because of it.

ETA: as we all know in 2010 with Cam Newton they were most likely cheating as well.

If only Indiana's state governor made us claim all our titles, we'd probably be up to 30 by now.

Thanks for putting this up- this guy is what is wrong with college football. The word parasite comes to mind.

Not at all disagreeing with your characterization of this guy, but what he actually said, I think is reasonable coming from his perspective. He said we would be very good this year but our problem is our scheduling. He called it "unmerciful", I believe. Saying, "it would be hard to win more than 10 games with this schedule." Which compared to what the SEC schedules, it most certainly is. But even more interesting to me, he admits what no other SEC fans, coaches, etc are willing to admit that the SEC does not have the toughest scheduling and it is infinitely harder to go through a schedule that takes you from coast to coast playing real competition than it is to never leave your region (or your state) in some instances no matter how good you claim those other teams to be.

He, in one statement, acknowledges the extreme difficulty of our scheduling model, and in so doing, apophatically reveals, that he on some level knows what everyone else in the country outside the SEC has been saying for years: The SEC was riding the gravy train with biscuit wheels to the BCS championship every year through a combination of absolutely favorable scheduling and artificial inflation of the entire conference by their corporate benefactors. I am not sure he realized he was saying that but it would be a hard argument for him to deny based on his statements.

Questionable National Championships

Questionable National Championships

Since 3T brought this up about Auburn, it's important to note that, although Alabama claims fifteen national championships, they really only have eight consensus national championships.

Their Sports Information Director added five titles to their 1983 Media Guide in addition to the six Alabama had claimed prior to this. Got 12? Here's how Alabama bumped up its claim to a dozen national titles
"I tried to make Alabama football look the best it could look and just make it as great as it could possibly be," Atcheson said. "I was a competitor myself with the other schools, and what they bragged about and boasted about, I wanted people to know the best about my school."
The most egregious inclusion was the 1941 NC claim when Alabama went 8-2 and finished 20th in the final poll.

Alabama claims two more - 1964 and 1973 - in the Bryant years due to finishing number 1 in polls prior to the bowl games. Alabama lost their bowl games in both years. The final AP poll was changed to after the bowl games for 1965. (The AP poll gives ND the national championship in 1973.) The UPI/Coaches final poll was changed to after the bowl games after Notre Dame beat Alabama in 1973.

Subtract the five the SID added in 1983 and the two bowl loss "championships" and Bama's total is eight.

Who has more national titles, Alabama or Notre Dame? Depends on who's counting

"If you get into counting apples and oranges and want to count every little poll out there, Notre Dame has 11 they call consensus national champions, and there were 10 other seasons that somebody picked them No. 1," said Tim Bourret, a Notre Dame graduate who worked in the Irish's sports information department in the 1970s. "So if Alabama is going to count 1941, then Notre Dame should be counting these other 10."

So, you have two standards - consensus and any that a poll or expert claims. With the consensus standard, Alabama has eight and ND has eleven. With the "any little poll" standard, Alabama has fourteen (everyone outside of Alabama denies the 1941 one) and ND has twenty-two (one computer poll gave 2012 to Notre Dame).

Put it here since he's an SEC blowhard, but apparently Finebaum lives under a rock since he thinks no one talks about Notre Dame:

Finebaum: ND not competing for national championship - ESPN Video

I don't really see what's wrong with this. He is giving us credit for a difficult schedule and he is in "wait & see" mode. Notre Dame must prove it belongs by making it to the National Championship. Until that happens, we are just another fringe team.

We've proven nothing and I agree with him, we are probably a 10-2 team. Between USC, Clemson, Ga Tech and Stanford, it's reasonable to expect at least one loss and then perhaps a hiccup game somewhere else.

How many games have we lost that we shouldn't have? I can think of at least three last season alone. It wasn't all Golson's fault.

This isn't hate, this is reasonability. We are fan(atic)s, so we have rose-colored glasses.

Let's actually earn praise this season rather than expecting it to be heaped on us. We've under-performed since our National title debut. We need to perform on all of our big stages this year and the critics will happily pump us up.

Roll Bama Roll has some very harsh comments on Finebaum and his callers

Sunday Morning Conversation: The SEC Network at One Year Old

The Paul Finebaum Show
Birmingham radio personality Finebaum moves his freak show to television in this daily four-hour broadcast of his show. This Tennessee grad is a disgrace to the University of Alabama, Auburn University, the state of Alabama, and the South in general. He has made a mountain of money feeding off stereotypes of ignorant idiotic Southerners with no grip on reality. To those callers who he has made into semi-celebrities: he and the nation are laughing at you, not with you. Shut your freaking traps. You are embarrassments.

For those of you who want to watch, here's Week 1's lineup for the SEC Network:
Thurs, Sept 3
Western Kentucky at Vanderbilt - 7:00pm CT

Sat, Sept 5
UT-Martin at Ole Miss - 11:00am CT
UL-Monroe at Georgia - 11:00am CT
Bowling Green at Tennessee - 3:00pm CT
SE Missouri St at Missouri - 3:00pm CT
New Mexico St at Florida - 6:30pm CT
McNeese State at LSU - 6:30pm CT

Let gets this straight ---he cleaned up his delivery and subject matter and description for the national show-on his show he bad mouthed Notre Dame as all his southern conscripts do and basically said Notre Dame is not important enough to be a factor in the national title talk. quote 'Notre Dame is just not a factor anymore. I don't see Notre Dame thru rose colored glasses-I know and understand Notre Dame and its mission thru football-this guy is a creep. This guy is a leach on the surface of college football and does not have an opinion worth a %$#@

In living up to it's namesake the USS Alabama now has stickers on the side of it's hull to commemorate it's having won WWI, WWII, The Korean War, The Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Peloponnesian War, First Indochina War, The Crusades and the War of Troy.

We could include assistant coaches for MVG. Pro coaches - Luke Del Rio.

Randy Shannon son Xavier was on scholarship with FIU, and grad transfer to Miami when his dad was Asst coach - but not on scholarship there. Got the employee tuition free deal.
