I get it but isnt that awfully experimental? I mean, you are taking a guy with zero coaching experience in that area and putting him in charge of that section of your team.

Did BK owe the guy a life debt or something? Why would you do that instead of just going and getting a proven TE coach? Especially when TEs HAD been a significant part of your teams offense prior

Sometimes it's easier bringing a guy in cheap from the inside that already has been learning your system. In this case it didn't pan out obviously, but hindsight is 20/20.

Kelly was a Linebacker in college, and mostly coached Linebackers/Defense before becoming a HC. Why does he have his hands in the QB coaching so much? People can learn...however I don't think Booker ever caught on and figured out how to develop the position.

Even though Booker didn't really pan on, plenty of coaches end up in different positions over the course of their careers. A good coach can adapt and learn. Some coaches can't make the transition.

Not sure that BK coaching QBs is the best example of coaches learning.

Well, Kelly has been pretty good at getting young QBs prepared when they've been sitting the bench (Other than the Crist/Michigan fiasco of 2010, but we were going to be fucked either way in that one with the starting QB going down). It's when he starts opening up the play book that things start getting dicey. He forces too much on the QB, puts too much of the offense on his shoulders. Some guys can handle it a bit, other QBs crack under the pressure.

And Im with you except I couldnt catch a cold if you threw it my way, much less a football.

I just dont get it. Plenty of money. Why dont you get the best coaches available to produce the best results? Seems to be a reoccurring theme for BK. Buddy DC. Buddy OC. Buddy S&C coach. What about getting jerks but can actually produce results?

Booker's value was as a recruiter. I think BK put him in a position he thought Booker could succeed in as a coach yet still be a very good recruiter. It unfortunately didn't work out. His recruiting abilities will be missed.

If We only ax one, I would much rather of gotten rid of Longo than Booker.. but change is good.. this program needs it

I was under the impression Longo and BK went "way back". So he'll probably be around as long as BK. But Longo has to see how we stack up in the fourth quarter, how we get pushed around, and man-handled. I won't start the debate on his role with team speed but he has to see that as well. Pick up your game Longo!

I would imagine that Booker had experience, without a title, helping coach the areas he was put in charge of. Maybe he showed particular aptitude for the position(s) while helping previous position coaches game plan?

What gets me is that he played DB. He coached DBs at his prior places of employment. Someone help me understand why BK would think he would be a good TE coach?

Great posts, I was literally having this exact same conversation with someone earlier today. Booker was set up to fail. Same logic applies to basically any person in any job.

It's like if you took me and said "wow, that's great you're a licensed structural engineer and have designed some good buildings... here, design a rocket engine." I'd fail, regardless of how hard I tried and how I wanted to succeed.

The Scoop - Monday January 22, 2018 - FootballScoop

Miami (OH): Scott Booker, who most recently coached the safeties and special teams at Nebraska, has joined the staff as receivers coach. Also, Joe Palcic has officially been named special teams coordinator after coaching the safeties the past three seasons, Bill Brechin will move from wide receivers to safeties coach, and Israel Woolfork will coach the slot wide receivers in addition to the running backs.

Scott Booker has been coaching in the NFL since 2018. We was with the Titans for six years under Vrabel, spent last year with the Bills and is now back with Vrabel in New England.

Vrabel must really work well with Booker than he keeps lugging him around the NFL on his coaching staff.
