Everyone I've ever talked to agrees that the "actual" Rudy sucks. A narcissist that has made a living off being the guy from the movie.

Could be worse. Could have become a Scientologist and made Rudy 2 starring Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

I'm still more pissed at Montana for shitting all over the story and tearing it down. Yeah, there were some Hollywood liberties taken with it, but who is Joe Montana to dump on the little guy? Lost a lot of respect for Joe.

I'm playing devil's advocate, but maybe it's because Joe took his time and his legacy at Notre Dame very seriously and didn't like that some very minor footnote in the football program got turned into a "Rocky" retread that turned its nobody protagonist into the Hollywood face of Notre Dame football.

Dan Devine was pissed about the movie, too, and for the same reason.

They took the legacy of a successful head coach, and portrayed him as an asshole that had no love for the little guy, between the jersey scene and the fact that they didn't portray the roster rules very accurately.

Rudy is the greatest movie that ever happened for me. My best friend was dating this chick off and on from LaPorte who had been Miss Teen Indiana. At some point she met Astin during the Rudy shoot and she's still married to him.

There is NOTHING better to have over your buddy than to be able to say, "STFU dude, you lost your chick to an actual Hobbit"

I will still watch Rudy once or twice a year and just pretend I know nothing of the real-life Rudy. I still pretend we're contenders for the Natty ever year, so this should be do-able.

A guy at my work came in one day with a pic of Rudy being carried off the field. It was autographed to me. I asked how he got it and evidently Rudy was going around making speeches at churches, telling how he financially screwed over a lot of people, but finally found God. Looks like he found another God as well!

Intresting fact. Last year he talked at a Utah Valley University which is just down the road from BYU so obviously I went to hear him. There were rumors that he was investigating the church (which is Mormon formertimg with the missionaries and studying the scriptures to see if you believe the church is true and want to join.) However Mormon culture has a lot of myths (like Steve Martin is a member, Madonna'a mom was a member, etc.) so I didn't believe it. He seemed like a good guy, but it's easy when you plan out your speech rather than share a Coca Cola at the local pub. Anyways basically "knew this a month ago".

Obviously I welcome him with open arms.

This is how I remember her. Props to her for going against the grain and aging naturally in LA, She looks like a normal 50 year old now.

Joe hasn't exactly been very warm about ND in recent years. He's hardly been an advocate of the university, and more often than not seems more critical of them than supportive. You would think if he was serious about his legacy he wouldn't take opportunities to tear the place down that gave him an education and helped him become a star.

Dan Devine was pissed about the movie, too, and for the same reason.

They took the legacy of a successful head coach, and portrayed him as an asshole that had no love for the little guy, between the jersey scene and the fact that they didn't portray the roster rules very accurately.

Dan Devine had good reason to be upset. They (The movie creators) took liberties with Devine's character for storytelling purposes. Yeah the jersey scene never happened, but I've read that several seniors did go to an Assistant Coach to try and get Rudy to dress for the game. Most of the movie is still true. Joe also said that the team only carried Rudy off the field as a joke, but other members of that roster have said otherwise. Joe was a freshman at the time, and probably wasn't as aware of Rudy's presence. In any case, I agree on your part of Devine, I'd be a little upset too if I was him, but I don't think the criticism is enough to tear the movie down.
