Not a household name to all, but a familiar name to football fans.

Don Banks passed away at the young age of 56.

Longtime NFL reporter and former Sports Illustrated writer Don Banks died Sunday. He was 56.

Banks passed away in his sleep after attending the Hall of Fame ceremonies in Canton, Ohio.

Banks was recently hired by the Las Vegas Review-Journal to cover the NFL.

Banks had previously worked for Sports Illustrated's NFL team for over 16 years. He was known for his "Snap Judgments" column, which was a comprehensive roundup of every Sunday’s NFL action. He wrote his last Snap Judgments for SI in 2016.

"Don was a brilliant reporter who never succumbed to cynicism or short cuts," SI's editor in chief Chris Stone said in a statement. "He was a journalist’s journalist, fierce in his pursuit of the story, but respectful of those he covered and those against whom he competed. He was generous with his knowledge, contacts and time to colleagues and competitors alike. There aren’t many like Brasco. Our heartfelt thoughts go to Alissa and his two sons, Matt and Micah."

Banks's first piece for the Review-Journal was published Sunday. He wrote about what the Browns learned on the HBO series, "Hard Knocks."

Rosie Ruiz passes at 66. Famous for cheating in the Boston Marathon and other races. Later in life went to prison for stealing $60K from the realty company she worked at. Also went to prison for cocaine trafficking.

From NBC sports
An unknown who didn’t look or act like she had just run 26.2 miles, Ruiz finished first in the women’s division in Boston in 1980 in a then-record time of 2 hours, 31 minutes, 56 seconds. Even as she was awarded her medal and the traditional olive wreath, her competitors wondered how a woman they hadn’t ever heard of — or seen on the course — could have won.

“We knew that she had jumped in. We, who knew what the marathon was, we got it,” Rodgers told The Associated Press on Thursday. “She wasn’t sweating enough; she had on a heavy shirt; she didn’t know about running.

RIP Easy Rider. Peter Fonda passed after a fight with cancer. Easy Rider wasn’t a well made movie, but it represented our generation and the fight against the “establishment “ and what he is best remembered for. A young actor by the name of Jack Nicholson had a small part in Easy Rider.

Fonda thought that he had made a major environmental-social statement with the film that he created/directed entitled Idaho Transfer --- a very dark post-collapse film that few understood. (George Lucas made a better one with THX1138, and few understand that one either.) Fonda used to say when asked about our environmental and social stupidities and their inevitable bad impacts: Watch Idaho Transfer; it's all in there.

I've watched it twice. If you are a serious person, and want to work at it, it's a rough meditation.

Fonda was in a movie that scared the sh!t out of me as a kid. Race with the Devil. Just watched the trailer, corny, poorly made, bad acting (except for Hot Lips Houlihan) but immediately conjured up that spooky feeling.

RIP Pete

Former Longhorn, Chicago Bear and Bengal Cedric Benson dies in an accident. Benson was only behind Earl Campbell in many Texas rushing records. His passenger was also killed in the accident

Former Texas Running Back Cedric Benson Dies in Motorcycle Accident at 36

He was way ahead of Campbell but well behind Ricky Williams.

Shame what happened to him. As an AMA member I will say, You wanna ride a motorcycle, get a dirt bike and stay off the road.

As a Bears fan I still say he was the dumbest draft pick of all time. They had just signed Thomas Jones from the Jets and passed on a lot of talent to add a second RB. That list includes (going to the NFL draft board to get the bad news)

DeMarcus Ware
Derrrick Johnson
Thomas Davis
Pacman Jones
Shawn Merriman
Carlos Rogers & his sister Erin

Mostly though, it ended up missing out on Roddy White. We all wanted him , Braylon Edwards or Troy Williamson. I liked Williamson at the time and he busted in Minnesota so there's that.

Dang. I can only imagine that Take Me Home Tonight will be the #1 played song at the local bars this evening.

A few years ago he played at a summer festival about 3 blocks from my house. I didn't get to go see the show, but sat out on my deck and could hear him very clearly. I know he announced just last month that he had stage 4 esophageal cancer and I was afraid this day would come all too soon.

The Cars were an underrated band IMO. Should have been inducted into the HOF a long time ago.

Robert Palmer succinctly described their sound as a combination of “punk minimalism, the labyrinthine synthesizer and guitar textures of art rock, the ’50s rockabilly revival and the melodious terseness of power pop.”

So what Palmer said was, They have their own unique sound.

RIP Rick.

I can't hear or think of Ocasek and the Cars without seeing his head on a fly like in the You Might Think video....

When I was a little tike, Saturday westerns were very big. Hopalong Cassidy was on along with Sky King, Roy Rogers, The Texas Rangers, Zoro and many more.

RIP Cowboy
