We can always count on you to shit all over a thread.

Dude....what the hell are you talking about? How did I shit all over the thread? I posted something topical and chimed in on a topic others were talking about. This is like the third of fourth time you have weirdly come at me for no apparent reason, including in threads I wasn't even posting in. Have you confused me with someone who ran over your dog or something?

Perhaps the timing wasn't great, and while I've only skimmed over the article, I thought it was common knowledge the the Warrior was pretty much a dick? Theres the infamous case where he blackmailed Vince for more money before he was supposed to go out for Wrestlemania (I think it was VII). He was said to be very standoff-ish with the rest of the guys backstage and didn't give them a lot of respect. As entertaining as he was, he was kind of a flash in the pan that some said didn't pay his dues before he was pushed to the top. He's had a lot of negative things to say of other wrestlers that put him over in their careers, like HHH and Hogan. Lot of examples of dick-ish behavior I guess, all old information, just bad timing with his passing maybe.

Gilberg...

I loved Gillberg. The entrance was hilarious.

There was another one where they did the pyrotechnics and he dove for cover.

Wow. The only event I ever went to had a main event of Ultimate Warrior vs Dino Bravo. RIP to both.

Total dick, with little to no actual wrestling ability. That's definitely common knowledge. Not well liked by anyone who worked with him beyond Steve Borden, aka "Sting", with whom he entered the business with while they were both bodybuilding back in their youth. Awful promos.

But beyond that, totally captivating and entertaining persona.

This video caught my attention a good while back.

James Hellwig may have been an asshole, but the Ultimate Warrior was one of my favorite athletes of all-time. If you asked me in 1990-91 who my favorite pro athletes were, 8-9 year old NDWorld would have said:

1. Bo Jackson
2. Joe Montana
3. Jerry Rice
4. Ultimate Warrior

I was always confused by the death rumors and always thought there was a different guy that played the UW during his comeback in 1996, which is around the time I stopped watching wrestling as religiously as I did in prior years. When I heard the news today I thought, wait, isn't this guy already dead? Are they talking about the 1st or 2nd UW? Turns out it was the same guy all along, huh?

RIP Warrior.

I don't even know if it exists online anymore. The original video was pretty long.

Warrior's legacy is already disappearing...

I was just trying to find an old episode of "Byte This" that WWE used to have. It coincided with the release of the "Self Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior DVD." WWE had asked Warrior if he would be part of a tribute DVD, and he sent a scathing reply back which prompted the DVD to become a slam instead of a tribute. Anyway, on Byte This "The Warrior" was supposed to show up and give his remarks, but instead some wrestler came out, did an awesome impression of him, and then read the nasty letter Helwig wrote to Vince (As the Ultimate Warrior of course). Damn if the video can't be found now.

Eerie he was literally just inducted and on t.v. giving that speech, then BAM!
You never know when you're number is called that's for sure.
He must have been ill with heart disease/bad liver etc...from the steriod days.
Alot of the wrestlers seem to check out around this age from prior abuses
to their bodies in the active wrestling years. Sad. RIP Warrior!

Yeah, word is he was grabbing his chest when he went down. I imagine it's a heart failure due to that steroid use, similar to the way Eddie passed.

I remember hearing a funny story about Andre and the Warrior from back in the day. Warrior was known for his "over the top" performances of course, and sometimes he would go a bit too far. Andre was known for being a gentle giant backstage with a sense of humor, but apparently even the Warrior knew how to push the big man's buttons:

Towards the end of Andre's career, he was doing a house show tour with the Ultimate Warrior and doing the job for him every night.

According to Bobby Heenan, Andre had a bit of a problem with the Warrior during this tour. There was a spot in the match where Warrior would clothesline Andre and send him into the ropes to be tied up.

Apparently, Warrior was stiffing Andre on the clothesline and the Giant told him to ease up. Warrior, being a known egomaniac and kind of a pain in the back, continued to stiff him a few more times.

One night, Andre had enough and waited for the clothesline spot. When Warrior came running at him like a maniac, Andre simply stuck up his massive fist and caught Warrior right in face, knocking him absolutely senseless.

In the matches after this incident, Warrior apparently barely touched Andre on the clothesline spot.

I got a kick out of that

Looks like there was a similar run in with Ravishing Rick Rude that I never heard about:

Ah, another story about someone putting Ultimate Warrior in his place.

During the Rude-Warrior angle in 1989, Rude came backstage after a match and asked Warrior to "lighten up" (stop working so stiffly)...are you sensing a pattern here?

Reportedly, Warrior replied with "I don't have to because I'm the Warrior."

Rude proceeded to knock Warrior on his ass with one punch.

I almost forgot about this one. This is probably one of the most bizarre interview segments in WWF/WWE history. It's not quite up there with the Katie Vick angle, but it's gotta be close. It's just creepy, and Brother Love's music playing in the background doesn't help.

RIP Warrior Hellwig. One of my heroes as a kid, still remember that match with him getting the torch passed to him from Hulk at Wrestlemania.

Well, actually I think you might consider it. But anyways, I just posted a link to an article that someone else wrote because, despite it's inflammatory headline, I thought it was pretty informative. Until I read that I had no idea about the Ultimate Warrior other than what he did in the ring 20 years ago. I think I'd rather be informed about someone so I know how to feel about their passing. Maybe you wouldn't. That's fine, but no need to blast me for giving other people a chance to learn something if they want to. It isn't like I personally wrote a hit piece on the guy in the hours after he passed.

Ha, actually, your story reminds me of a dark match I saw about 10 years ago in Cincinnati. It was after RAW finished filming, and it was when right after Orton split off from Evolution I think. HBK was tag teaming with Orton against HHH and Flair, and it was one of the funniest matches I ever saw. It was incredibly fake, but so entertaining. Even before the match began HHH was on the microphone talking trash to individuals in the crowd, making fun of them. A lot of it was kind of offensive, but it was funny. I remember he picked a fight with a little kid in the front row, and then somehow the kid wound up on the other side of the barrier and HHH was chasing him around the ring with HBK helping him escape. Someone about this giant HHH chasing a little kid and picking a fight with him was just hilarious. This was all before the match started.

The match itself was great too. There was one point where Flair and HHH were both in the ring, Orton popped them both at the same time, and them both face planted Ric Flair style. At another point Orton was down on his back and HHH climbed to the top rope, which rarely happens. As HHH is jumping down to deliver an attack, Orton lifts his foot at the last second and it clocks HHH in the jaw. HHH then stood there, dazed, for over half a minute, no exageration. He swayed back and forth during this time, while Michaels was in the corner trying to blow him over. Finally HHH shakes the cobwebs out, goes to take a step forward, and promptly face plants again. Huge roar from the crowd, it was hilarious.

There was plenty of other stuff too, but thats what I can remember. I would have to say that was actually my favorite match ever. They just did a bunch of stuff that you would never see them do on TV because they don't have the time to do it.

Ha, you're only upset because you know it's true. I love the Rock, don't get me wrong. He's easily one of the top 5 most charismatic guys to ever step into the ring. Hell, he could be #1. He's just never been, and never will be, a great technical wrestler. If the Rock wasn't golden on the mic, he would have never made it in the business. The fact is that he was electrifying when he spoke, and no one cared when he wrestled average matches.

Another little story. My two youngest boys were wrestling in the AAU Nationals in Oklahoma City. I think it was 2000 or 2001. It was when the Rock was catching fire. Anyway, we're in the hallway standing in line to complete their registration. After we're done we're walking out and here comes Rick Flair with his kid. As we approach Flair, I blurt out, "Hey Rick, do you smell what the Rock is cookin'?" He gave me the shittiest look you ever saw. LOL

My favorite Warrior monologue was when he talked about taking control of Hulk Hogan's plane and nose diving it into the ground. "Take the two pilots, who have already made the sacrifice, so that you can face this challenge. Dispose of them Hulk Hogan. Assume the controls Hulk Hogan. SHOVE THE CONTROLS INTO A NOSE DIVE HULK HOGAN! Push yourself to total self destruction! As you realize Hulk Hogan, you are about to enter a world......... close to Parts Unknown....... Oh, smell it, oh yes."

That shit was awesome. The Warrior was crazy and I loved him as a wrestler. Sad when anyone dies too early.

I thought the same thing. I was 8 in 1991, so we are the same age. I thought there were like 4 warriors and the previous 3 died of steroids.

But like you said it was just one great guy. Rip
