That sucks. With a Little Help From my Friends is a classic and one of those rare songs where the cover blows away the original.

I remember seeing him on TV as a wee lad in the late 70s while at my Uncle's bonfire. Was moved by his energy and the way he could belt out a tune. Not many of his stature left from the old guard. Breaking out some tunes this evening while I pack.

Sad news. What an original singer.

Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world, few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real, I keep it alive

The road is long, there are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know, up where the clear winds blow

Some hang on to "used to be"
Live their lives, looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our life, out there to find

The road is long, there are mountains in our way,
But we climb them a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know, up where the clear winds blow

Time goes by
No time to cry
Life's you and I
Alive, today

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know, up where the clear winds blow

I loved it when Belushi did an impression of him as they were both performing onstage on SNL

That was a classic.

Joe Cocker's heyday was my late teens early 20's. Unusual voice and style that set him apart.

RIP Joe.

I met Joe at a small room private screening of the film JAWS back in the mid 70s--I had a friend who owned a theater chain in St Louis who invited him. My impression was " wow this guy does a lot more drugs and booze then I do " and back in the day that was saying something. He lived very hard as I guess many musicians do. RIP Joe!

Well, at least since they finally let Seger & Foreigner in.

I have no respect for the R&R HOF. It’s a joke. They damn near let anyone in and then you find there’s some that should have been in years ago that took decades to get entry.

How many actual songs did Joe Cocker write, that anyone would know? Honest question. Primary writer, not cover.

Metallica.

They weren't bigger than Motley until the Black Album. Here is what Google says.

AI Overview

+3
While Mötley Crüe was undoubtedly one of the most commercially successful and influential bands of the 1980s metal scene, it's difficult to definitively declare them the "biggest." Other bands like Metallica and Van Halen also achieved significant commercial and cultural impact. Mötley Crüe's MTV-fueled success and mainstream appeal, particularly with their second album "Shout at the Devil," certainly solidified their place in the top tier of 80s metal.
Here's a more detailed look at why Mötley Crüe is often considered a key band of the era:
Commercial Success:
Mötley Crüe sold over 80 million albums worldwide, including 25 million in the U.S., solidifying their commercial dominance.
MTV Impact:
The band's success was significantly boosted by MTV, which played a major role in popularizing their music and image.
Mainstream Appeal:
Mötley Crüe's blend of heavy metal, glam rock, and a penchant for controversy resonated with a broader audience, contributing to their mainstream success.
Cultural Impact:
The band's lifestyle, image, and music helped shape the 80s metal scene and influenced a generation of musicians.

Who was a bigger metal band from 1982-1992? Not better, that's subjective.
Oh, I don’t know, Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Metallica, Def Leppard, Poison, Scorpions, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, Van Halen, etc. G’N’R was the biggest band in the world from ‘87-‘92.

Motley Crue is/was awful. Nikki Sixx was such an awful bass player that they had to bring in a ringer for recordings (I’m a bassist; it ain’t that hard, especially playing mostly root notes) AND they’re fuckin’ Milli Vanilli in concert! Probably because Vince Meal, I mean Vince Neil, has a vocal range of half an octave.

This isn't about who you think is better and who was awful though.

Judas wasn't as BIG but they were big. Van Halen peaked in 1984 then Roth left.

The Scorpions were not bigger. Poison was as big for half as long. Bon Jovi and Def as big? ok fine.

The Gunners did overthrow them as biggest in 1988.

From what I understand, Motley is getting the Kiss treatment. Instead of for the makeup and costume gimmick, it's for their awful off Tage behavior. Vince paralyzing a guy from drinking and driving and much more.

Motley and Maiden should be in eventually.

*Van Halen was bigger after Roth. 5150 was their only #1 album.
*Neil killed the drummer from Hanoi Rocks while driving drunk.

So I looked it up. Motley Crue and Van Halen have both sold 80 million albums, worldwide. They both deserve to be in the hall of fame.

I can't believe 1984 wasn't number 1. When most people think of them at their absolute zenith, it was that era. But fair enough, 5150 went number 1.

Yeah, I knew it was something terrible like that with the auto accident. Lots of other bad things to people who matter in the business. Burning bridges.

Quick story. My Tutor in college was in a band. They were playing at some club and Vince was there. He got up and sung with them for a couple of songs. Cool, right?

Well after the last song, he did some rock star thing by tossing the mic stand really hard on the stage and slamming the mic down on it. He was like 'Vince, that cost me $2,000!'

He rolled his eyes and smiled like he was saying 'do you know how lucky you are that I sung with your little band up there' and walked off.
