Then assistant equipment manager Adam Myers handed me a pair of scissors and a piece of shiny gold sticky paper. Turns out they don't polish the helmets at Notre Dame anymore. They patch them. They switched last October to a new kind of textured graphic helmet that's so shiny they look like miniature Golden Domes. When they get a gouge in them, you don't paint them, you apply a sticky gold bandage over it, the way you would on the skinned knee of a Trump.

Over the next three hours, every player who came in wanted to watch me do their helmet. Maybe they thought I'd spit in it.

But here's the weird thing: It was fun. It was an honor. This team will never be forgotten at Notre Dame, and saying that at a school with 11 national championships is a mouthful. Imagine: They went from unranked to No. 1 and finished up beating USC, a team that went from No. 1 to unranked.

Definitely worth reading.

He'll always be a douche bag, but I'm impressed with the article. He was pretty humble, even calling his polishing duties "an honor", which they are. I love that he pointed out Mike Golic was also PO'd. Anyway, a lot better than I expected. Seems like the kids had fun with it, and an anit-Irish media goofball ate crow.

Weird how this turned into a positive, lol. Glad the players had fun with it.

I kept waiting for some little undercut statement just for him to hold true to that first horrendous article, but it never happened. I am surprised.

This is the kind of writing that allowed for Rick Reilly to obtain a 2.5 million a year contract or whatever. Regardless of the subject, this type of light, happy, positive, self depracating, and enjoyable style is what made Rick Reilly great. Hope he stays on this path.

Am I the only one that read that and shuddered? Even his apologizes come across as douchey.

"Me and my big mouth."

Geeeee-Whiz. If only I had kept my mouth shut about picking the obvious favorite to lose, and making a contrived bet on it that involved me getting one on one time with a BCS championship team, I wouldn't have had to come here and get a free story off the anger and glee of a fanbase I wrote a new *sshole at the beginning of the season. Aw shucks. *kicks can* When will it ever go right for Reilly? WHA-WHA-WHAAAAAA!

(I'm well aware of your position in this Kuehnja. No need to stick up for the positive situation.)

Article was good. He owned up to his being wrong all season and the players seemed to have fun with it. It's all good. Now, the guys just have to get ready for Bama and finish this season off in style.

THIS.

He's not fvcking sorry people! Hell there's a part of me that thinks he may not even give a sh!t about ND football. All he's doing is using us to make a name for himself. The D-bag wrote one of the most atrocious articles I have ever read and was rewarded for his douchebaggery by getting to do what most of us would consider a dream. Now he's all "DOH, I was wrong", and I'm suppossed to applaud him for it!?

Let me give some of you something to think about. Assume we didn't run the table and aren't undeafetd playing for a natty.
This D-bag would be writing more slam pieces about how we should leave D-1 fb. He'd be tooting his damn horn and we'd all be calling him out for what he really is. But, we go undeafeted, he get's publicity for his garbage writing, and is even rewarded for it!

This man is making a big name for himself at ND's expense, and secretly laughing at all of ND nation as he does it. But yeah, he's ok now because he manned up.

As much as you don't want to admit it, Rick Reilly already has a big name. He has been a big time sports writer for a long, long time. Doesn't make him less of a d-bag and it doesn't change the fact that the original article was a hack job just to get views.

Gentlemen: priorities. The only way in which this media person is important to Notre Dame football is that he is read by many people interested in college football. Therefore, the only thing that is important to us is writing which enhances the reputation of Notre Dame football, and that only in a narrow category of ways.

This writer cannot influence play on the field unless players or coaches are weak-minded. None of our guys are. Kelly basically blew him off. The guys basically laughed him off. The writer can only influence the "psychological atmosphere" which exists in the public about Notre Dame football, and that is only in the very indirect way of possibly influencing current or future recruits.

His practical importance to us [all that is really important] is that he is a small part of the Emotion-o-Sphere "out there" where kids grow up and began to think thoughts about being a football star at a great university. Kelly, by the way, understands all of this brilliantly. He is the Master Farmer cultivating the entirety of national media to seed good feelings in media personages one by one. Or look at him as a missionary, converting the biased and the ignorant. It's slow work, and he has a lot still to do.

Still: Kelly is making headway. Allowing one former screw-up to come to the Sacred Grounds, and counseling his seniors to "play it light", produced a fine article for what Coach is trying to accomplish, and probably some serious subconscious influence about future articles.

People like Brian Kelly. They also like Lou Holtz and Mike Golic and Aaron Taylor and Justin Tuck and Manti Te'o etc. We have apostles out there plowing the psychological fields. The two previous coaches put us in a hole in many ways. Coach is filling it in with discipline and wins. He'll have converted nearly everyone before he's done.

Watch the smiles, folks, when our great holistic football administrator walks into one of those media rooms. ... and for the rest of us, don't get in the way of what he's doing and actually succeeding at.

All Hail the Head Coach!!!! Dammm... am I glad to see that twinkling Irishman roll out in front of either the Team in the tunnel or the cameras of the media. We are really blessed.

This guy has been on our list of hacks for quite a while, but he brings attention to an important issue in this article. It makes you wonder if you have been a good friend and if you really pay attention when your loved ones are talking to you. I hope we all do.

No easing up on Reilly, not even during the holidays. He can write whatever he wants now and it doesn't matter.

@awfulannouncing: Presenting - An Ode to Rick Reilly. An Ode to Rick Reilly | May | 2013

There once was a man named Reilly,
His work used to be regarded highly.
He once was quick as a pistol,
Then got hired by Bristol.

He was a good writer,
He once could be proud.
But now he writes jokes,
that make me curse aloud.

Money became his muse,
So recycled columns he did use
And he'll continue to collect his paycheck wryly.

He fell off the wagon,
Although he keeps braggin,
Even when he keeps writing quite dryly.

He bloviates poetically,
Though he does poorly phonetically,
Inventing words to fit his awful rhyme,
Reilly wasticated all of our time.

They put him on shows,
Now his work blows,
And God only knows,
How much lower he goes.

Rick Reilly has spent
Many years at the top
Which is rather amazing
When he produces such slop.

Never call him a quitter,
Because he breaks news on Twitter.
