Gotta say I was really impressed with Grubbs. How many times in the past have we seen the backup come in and be unable to run the offense? Gino had him and Teddy ready to go. Credit to Freeman/Denbrock for letting those guys toss the ball, these experiences will pay off down the road (hopefully later rather than sooner).

The second teamers on defense were really solid. Loved seeing Keeley, Rezac, Dunham etc. make some plays in the second half.

Ultimately, the big takeaways for me are (1) how dominant our front 6 are becoming and (2) CJ continuing to develop chemistry with the skill players.

I can see it now at the end of the year from the official 'Heads"... ".... well ND started out slow against Wisconsin and then fell on their face in the second half against Rice."..... Seriously, I'm tired of haters and committees not looking at the entire 'picture' and framework of ND and how they play and treat opponents in games just like this. ND is not the sec/Shit-e-c where you keep going to embarrass – not the team – but the kids vying for a spot on the team when down.

Great win for the Irish. Proud of how they treated Rice Owls. They put up the best fight they could.

Not surprising, unfortunately. I sort of feel bad for him because he had a lot of hype based on his ranking, which was unfair to him. He never should've been ranked as high as he was, and his offer list was that of a 3* recruit.

Also just seems like a great kid. Hopefully he gets his degree and transfers to a low level P4 and can just catch post routes from a gunslinger for 2 years.

Grubbs is a good backup and impressed in his time, though Jerard I think has a lot of potential and a much better arm so later in the season could take the position.

I don't know if Grubbs could throw a spiral if his life depended on it and certainly that would be a factor if there were any sort of soft breeze.

After this game, I'm in danger of believing I've seen enough to tell the staff what to do:

1. Aneyas is a good back. Nolan James and Jonaz Walton are better. Aneyas doesn't have the burst I wanted to see. Maybe I'm overreacting but I think James and Walton should at least be an even time share (if Walton can pick up blitz/operate in the offense).

2. JBJ, Elijah Burress, Matt Jeffry and Mylan Graham need to earn more snaps. Saldate looked smooth. Out of all of them, I thought Elijah Burress looked the most impactful. If you paired him with Faison, Gilbert - it'd be a very dangerous receiving group. Add them to the RBs and TEs and I believe it's a very formidable group.

3. I was really hoping to see Bubba Frazier have a play drawn up but I have a suspicion the game was so out of hand they are keeping it in their pocket for MSU or further down the road. I really hope the staff have opportunities to play some of these young guys to see what they have/how they respond.

4. The defense is downright suffocating. I love how many reps were had by the younger players, that's how you develop a team.

We’ve had good defenses, but this one in particular plays with a level of violence and aggression that is just evident on tv. Elite athletes dialed in all over. This is what I’ve been waiting for. Every level.

The only thing I'll say in Williams' defense is that he did just have 20 rush game against Wisconsin 6 days ago. It would not shock me if he was feeling some wear and tear.
