According to Jesse Palmer Coach Kelly has made his decision on a new DC. probably announced early next week. One name to possibly keep in mind is Jets LB coach Brian Van Gorder who coached with Kelly at Grand Valley as LB/DC. Former DC with Georgia and Atlanta Falcons who did great work at both stops. Won Frank Broyles award one year at Georgia. Very intense, very passionate coach who prefers to coach from the sidelines.

Interesting. I read that Palmer quote in the Hansen article and assumed it meant a promotion from within because he "already knew who it was." Wasn't thinking it would be someone from the NFL ranks to be named after their season concludes.

Fox and Jackson wouldn't approve.

Keep in mind this is speculation at this point. It could just as well be Kerry Cooks. But most people around the program have thought the DC hire would come from the outside while the OC hire would come from within.

That hire is bginning to look more and more desireable. Small sample to judge on as far as Cooks goes but i think our defense could use some outside help

VanGorder's 1987 American Heritage School team was ranked No. 1 in the state of Florida.

interesting

University of Georgia[edit]

In 2001 he was hired as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. During his first year as defensive coordinator in 2001, the Bulldogs allowed just 18.9 points per game, ended up fifth in rushing defense and ranked 17th in scoring defense.[3] The 2002 season saw VanGorder's defense not only lead the SEC in scoring defense, but finished fourth nationally.[4] The Bulldogs allowed less than 15 points per game during the season on their way to eventually winning the Sugar Bowl and finishing third in the final national poll. For his performance, VanGorder named as the seventh recipient of the Valvoline Southern Sports Tonight Assistant Coach of the Year.[5]

In 2003, VanGorder's defense ranked third nationally in scoring defense, fourth in total defense and sixth in passing defense.[6] In turn, VanGorder received the Frank Boyles "Assistant Coach of the Year" award, which honors the nation's top assistant coach.[7] During his final season at Georgia in 2004, the 10–2 Bulldogs were ranked seventh in the final national poll as VanGorder's defense finished the season ranked eighth and ninth in scoring defense.[8]

During his Georgia tenure, six of VanGorder's players were selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft, including defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan, safety Thomas Davis and defensive end David Pollack in the first round, and safety Sean Jones and linebackers Boss Bailey, as well as Odell Thurman in the second round. During his four years at Georgia the Bulldogs defense only give up 30 points one time, against LSU in the 2003 SEC Championship Game.

Color me surprised. I would have never expected this, and it is one of the few hires that looks better than Pendergast!

Apparently Van Gorder has a close relationship with Kelly, per Sampson. Dave Aranda and Van Gorder are the two names he's thrown out.

Hearing that dwshde was right and it will in fact be Van Gorder. This is a hire I can definitely get behind.

Wow, outside hire? I just assumed it would be an inside deal as Kelly likes his staff it seems. Hope this doesn't upset any of his loyal guys.

Agreed, he's considered a good recruiter and if he already has a relationship with Kelly things should gel quickly. Also a high energy guy which always seems good for defense.

Yeah. Don't want to lose coaching chemistry, or recruiters. But the fact that Elston has already committed to staying would seem to be a good sign. I'd assume he and Kelly had a talk about this before he did that. I suppose Cooks could jump if a full DC job opened up, though.

Van Gorder was the Defensive Coordinator at GVSU while Kelly was the head coach.

At least for a few seasons

Any reason why he's only a lb coach right now? Sounds like a good hire though…

He was the DC at Auburn last year (I know, I know), lost his job in the coaching turnover there, landed with the Jets. Would assume that's why.

Seems like he is an NFL LB coach because he was Auburn DC in 2012 and then Malzahn came in and gutted the whole staff... so he probably took the first good job offered to him.

With Ron Burgundy so hot right now, I really like hiring a guy with his facial hair.

Plus, we've done great with SEC assistant coaches who were burned by terrible head coaches.
