Well we debate back and forth on recruits physical abilities so I thought it would be of value to start a thread on recruits that may have academic concerns.

We take the good with the bad...we miss on elite athletes that struggle academically but we appeal to those that see the 40 year picture.

Who do we want that have an offer, but may not qualify?

Nyles Morgan I've heard thrown around. No idea the veracity of those claims.

Taking my mod cap off for a moment, is this thread a good idea? None of us has verifiable information on this subject, so it's basically just speculation on which of our recruiting targets might be too dim and/or lazy to make it past admissions.

Not the sort of thing we'd want a recruit's parent to stumble across here.

Yeah it's probably a line that shouldn't be crossed. Not that it isn't an important factor but comes over as smug if looked at by outsiders.

I don't think we need to go down this road. Debates on physical abilities are ok because there is some kind of info that is up to different interpretation by everyone. It's a little more plausible to watch a player's film and look at his size/weight/build and have something to back up an argument. I personally have never seen a recruit who might not qualify make his grades/test scores public, so this entire thread would be baseless speculation.

I'd vote for shutting it down before it gets going too much.

Probably for the best. I liked the easy access of recruiting information, but maybe isn't the right place and the right time.

Wouldn't be a bad thread if all names of uncommitted recruits are removed.

I don't see any problem with talking about the standards of ND, or past recruits that wanted in, but couldn't make it such as Jonathan Baldwin or Alquadin Muhammed

I think your intent was well-meaning, so I wouldn't go so far as to call your post a "joke". I think the discussion would probably fair better if the focus was more on just how Universities like Notre Dame are working with high schools (administrators, faculty, counselors, coaches, etc.) to assist interested athletes who are on the cusp of achieving academic preparedness.

I'm not privy to that kind of insider information, but I assume that ND does everything they can to gauge both interest and potential for athletes soon to face the academic rigors of University life. As the current coaching staff continues to perfect their approach, disappointing stories like AQM (still really wanted that guy) should hopefully minimize.

My only point of disagreement in your post is when you put a separation between good/top athletes that want the 40 year plan and elite athletes who have academic struggles. I think there are elite athletes that may have some academic struggles, but they're not that far off from succeeding in the classroom and could make it at ND. Those guys are out there, and I think finding ways to help them better prepare is a process as important as assessing their on-the-field talents early in the recruiting process.

The staff has been doing an excellent job overall, and I see that success continually being refined.

Current recruits is definitely a bad idea. I think past recruits would be a little less problematic, but still not such a great idea.

How much wiggle room does ND have in accepting a kid who has the ability to do university-level work, but maybe didn't take hs seriously his first year or two or didn't have the background and support to do well academically. I'm talking about a kid who shows every sign of having the right attitude and being willing to work in the class room. Can ND make an exception for a kid like that?

I'm going to close it for now, if someone wakes up tomorrow and wants to reopen it that's fine.
