Well we debate back and forth on recruits physical abilities so I thought it would be of value to start a thread on recruits that may have academic concerns.
We take the good with the bad...we miss on elite athletes that struggle academically but we appeal to those that see the 40 year picture.
Who do we want that have an offer, but may not qualify?
1. Clifton Garrett.

I think your intent was well-meaning, so I wouldn't go so far as to call your post a "joke". I think the discussion would probably fair better if the focus was more on just how Universities like Notre Dame are working with high schools (administrators, faculty, counselors, coaches, etc.) to assist interested athletes who are on the cusp of achieving academic preparedness.
I'm not privy to that kind of insider information, but I assume that ND does everything they can to gauge both interest and potential for athletes soon to face the academic rigors of University life. As the current coaching staff continues to perfect their approach, disappointing stories like AQM (still really wanted that guy) should hopefully minimize.
My only point of disagreement in your post is when you put a separation between good/top athletes that want the 40 year plan and elite athletes who have academic struggles. I think there are elite athletes that may have some academic struggles, but they're not that far off from succeeding in the classroom and could make it at ND. Those guys are out there, and I think finding ways to help them better prepare is a process as important as assessing their on-the-field talents early in the recruiting process.
The staff has been doing an excellent job overall, and I see that success continually being refined.
