I remember seeing Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel walking through my high school to see 2 of our football players, that was pretty cool

But they also got Clausen, Floyd, Young, Wenger, Olson, Crist, McDonald, both Grays, Tuitt, Nix, Lynch, Ishaq. You arent going to get all the top end talent. Weis loaded his class with 4-5 stars, but never got depth in the 3star kids. I mean you can make an argument that ND had no business getting any of those kids I listed minus Floyd. You are going to pull some from families/areas ND has no track record of success in and lose some with families/areas that ND has a good track record.

I'm not saying CW's staff or BK's staff did a poor job recruiting. I'm just referring to the kids that seemed like ND locks and then got away, only to later down the road have very productive careers. I say "lock" in general...was committed at one point, was a legacy, etc. The "what if" factor takes over when mentioning these kids.

The whole Darby and Greenberry sagas are sad too. Both I feel would be studs for ND. What comes of their collective careers is yet to be determined.

Just recently started following recruiting, anyone care to explain Gio Bernard and Anthony Barr and the ND relation?

Gio wanted to play for Weis in a pro style system.
Barr liked ND but just didn't wanna go to ND. Blazed his own trail. Kelly recruited him at LB first then switched to WR when he wasn't buying it.

Not landing Barr stung even more since he is Tony Brooks' son-- a legacy from the Golden Era of Holtz.

not so fast my friend...weis wasn't sold on him at RB and thought he belonged at linebacker...then weis was canned and so since both of these things happened he went to UCLA...it wasn't like he just wanted to be different, ucla sold him on being in their pistol offense as the "perfect fit" for the h back postion..

Yup and I'm pretty sure Gio's decommitment had a little to do with BK's staff evaluating Cam Roberson higher than Gio. Is that right?

Note: That class alone just saw 6 guys sign contracts with NFL teams. Pretty impressive considering it was a transition year for coaching staffs.

"They were all watching the game," Cerrato said. "I knew they would be. So I called their houses all over the country, and I said: 'This is Vinny Cerrato from Notre Dame. I'm on the sidelines at the Orange Bowl. You watching?' And then I'd tell them what the next play was going to be."

That's correct - Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz sends in each offensive play, and Cerrato made a point of finding out what the play was going to be. He knew how effective this would be over the phone.

"The high school kids could hear all the crowd noise, and they could hear our players hollering," Cerrato said. "I'd say: 'I'm on the 35-yard line. I've got the play for you. We're going to run a 34.' A 34 is a handoff to the fullback over the right side. I'd say to the high school kids, 'Watch the fullback.' And while I was on the phone, the fullback would run that play."

Tommy would have audibled us out of so many recruiting battles.

The amount of players who could've/should've played at ND and later became standouts in college and/or the NFL is staggering to me. It seriously drives me nuts. I know you win some and you lose some. But for awhile there, it really seemed like ND lost more than their fair share. Randy Moss, Greg Olsen, Gio Bennard, Anthony Barr are just a few that have already been listed...I'm sure the guys who have been following ND recruiting for a long time know of a bunch more.

Ah, the ones that got away. Though to be fair, Moss and Barr were 20 years and four coaches apart, and completely different situations. We got a lot of good ballplayers in the interim.

Everybody loses out on good players, even ones their fans think are "locks." Maybe we lose more than our share because we're out there recruiting nationally, almost always against hometown schools, other major powers, teams that'll take kids we won't, etc. We don't have a home turf we can lock up the way Texas or Florida or even USC does.

That said, worst (pre-signing day) loss in my time following this has got to be Deontay Greenberry. It's one thing to lose an elite recruit late to Florida State. It's another to lose one to Houston. When his cousin is coming here, no less (though of course we know how that turned out. Maybe Deontay did, too.)

This one ND had a QB committed really early and he was really good. Then, after some meddling from a reporter, he decommitted from ND. He even had a Notre Dame golf bag, dude, so you know it was serious.

Anyway, people got really angry and canceled 247 subscriptions and such.

I guess you had to be there.

This is going to be a perfect story in 10-15 years when a GBDomer disciple starts a thread wanting to know crazy recruiting stories.

What's a GBdomer disciple. I wanna hear this

Someone who posts how much they love a tweet but don't actually post the tweet and/or someone who doesn't end a question in a question mark.

Hahah I love Barnetts last tweet.

This one, full of irony?

His twitter has zero Ducks garb,

Notre Dame still all over it.

I think he'll come to regret his decision.

I hope he'll be humble enough to recommit.

I would love to have his talent but a Cali QB who wavered during the process has transfer written all over it.
